Christian Villanueva will be worked out at shortstop later in Padres camp.

Villanueva has played shortstop a few times in the Mexican Winter League and in the lower minors, but not for a long time. He would be viewed mainly as an emergency option at the position, but it would help his already-good chances of making the Opening Day roster if he can prove to be competent there. Villanueva is out of options.

Christian Villanueva smacked a grand slam in Thursday's Cactus League game against the Rangers.

Making the start in the designated hitter spot, Villanueva launched a James Jones offering over the wall as part of a five-run Padres third inning. It was his second longball already this spring in five games. Villanueva had a big year at Triple-A El Paso in 2017 and closed the season strong with the Padres. He's out of options and thus is a good bet to make the Opening Day roster.

Christian Villanueva finished 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's loss on the road against the Dodgers.

Christian Villanueva went 2-for-4 and hit his first major league homer Wednesday against the Diamondbacks.

Villanueva didn't get the nod on Tuesday, but he has started two of the three games since his callup. The Padres should make him their third baseman the rest of the way just to see what they might have here.
