Burns will take the place of Alexi Ogando (biceps) on the active roster. The 25-year-old had an impressive 1.38 ERA and 18/4 K/BB ratio over 13 innings in Triple-A and will pitch in middle relief.

Padres recalled RHP Cory Burns from Triple-A Tucson.

Burns was just recently optioned back to the minors on August 5 after throwing one scoreless inning for San Diego. He'll again serve in a middle relief role with the Padres, allowing Dale Thayer or Luke Gregerson to fill in as the interim closer while Huston Street (calf) is sidelined.

According to the player's agent, the Padres will promote right-hander Cory Burns to the majors on Friday.

Burns, who was acquired from the Indians for outfielder Aaron Cunningham last December, has an excellent 2.63 ERA and 77/16 K/BB ratio over 65 innings of relief this season with Triple-A Tucson. The 24-year-old right-hander will likely start out in lower-leverage situations before being trusted in the late innings.

Burns, 24, posted a 2.11 ERA and 70/15 K/BB ratio over 59 2/3 innings this past season with Double-A Erie. While he has racked up 88 saves over three seasons in the minors, he projects as a set-up man in the big leagues.
