The move was made in order to clear room on the 40-man roster for Jackie Bradley. Gomez is 28, but he's mashed the last two years at Triple-A and could draw some interest on waivers.

Mauro Gomez went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI as the Red Sox defeated Boston College 11-1 on Thursday.

The 28-year-old Gomez survived the Red Sox's 40-man roster crunch this winter, but he's not going to make the team this spring unless Mike Napoli goes down. The left-handed bats of Daniel Nava (switch-hitter), Mike Carp and Lyle Overbay are all more viable bench options.

Mauro Gomez blasted a homer and drove home three runs in a losing effort against the Blue Jays on Friday.

He finished the night 2-for-2 with a run scored and three RBI. Gomez entered in the seventh inning as a pinch-hitter for Ryan Kalish, delivering an RBI single. He added a two-run blast off Brandon Lyon in the ninth to pull the Sox to within 7-5, but that would be as close as they'd get. He's hitting .302 with a pair of homers and 11 RBI in 63 at-bats on the season.

Mauro Gomez went 4-for-6 with a home run and three RBI in Saturday's loss to the Royals.

The Red Sox tallied a whopping 20 hits, but the Royals rallied late and grabbed a 12th-inning victory. Gomez hit a solo shot in the second inning, a run-scoring single in the third inning and another RBI single in the fourth. He's batting .318/.348/.477 through 12 games played this season.

This likely precludes Felix Doubront (knee) being placed on the disabled list. Doubront can be assigned to the DL retroactively, and could be cleared to return next Saturday against the Royals when first eligible.

Pedroia is returning from the disabled list. Gomez, 27, is 9-for-30 (.300/.323/.400) this year in the major leagues and should be brought back up later this summer.

Gomez was just sent down to the minors on Saturday, but he's able to return due to the injury to David Ortiz. The 27-year-old is hitting .308 (8-for-26) with three doubles and three RBI in eight games with the BoSox this season.

Red Sox purchased the contract of INF Mauro Gomez from Triple-A Pawtucket.

The 27-year-old hasn't appeared in a major league game, but he's posted some pretty nice power numbers in the minors the last couple years and had already slugged 10 homers for Pawtucket this season. He'll provide infield depth.

Red Sox signed INF Mauro Gomez to a minor league contract.

Gomez posted a promising .304/.356/.522 batting line with 34 doubles, 24 homers and 90 RBI in 135 games last year at Triple-A Gwinnett. But the 27-year-old infielder is doubtful to climb to the major leagues with Boston.
