Brewers signed INF/OF Cory Spangenberg to a one-year, $1.2 million contract.
Spangenberg has an option remaining and would make $250,000 if he's in the minors instead of on the major league roster. He figures to compete for playing time at second base as it stands right now, although the Brewers seem likely to bring in additional outside help at the position. Jan 4 - 5:18 PM

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that the Brewers have agreed to a one-year deal with Cory Spangenberg.

It's a split contract, says Rosenthal, which will pay Spangenberg $1.2 million if he's on the MLB roster, and $250,000 if he is in Triple-A. He was released by the Padres in November after being designated for assignment, and hit .258/.318/.391 in his five seasons with San Diego. The 27-year-old is capable of playing all over the field, and it's possible he could compete for playing time at second base with Milwaukee. More than likely, he'll be a super-utility player for the reigning NL Central champions. It's also worth pointing out that Spangenberg has one minor league option left.

Padres released INF/OF Cory Spangenberg.

The former first-round pick has been a bust to this point with a career .258/.318/.391 batting line over five seasons. Spangenberg does have some versatility and is just 27, but he might have to settle for a minor league contract.

Padres designated INF Cory Spangenberg for assignment.

Spangenberg appeared in 116 games for the Padres this season, but he continued to struggle offensively, posting a .661 OPS with just seven home runs and 25 RBI across 329 plate appearances. The former No. 10 overall pick will likely draw interest on waivers, but he turns 28 years old next spring and probably won't find a starting job anywhere for 2019.

Cory Spangenberg had a rough day at the dish in Sunday's loss to the Dodgers, going 0-for-3 with three strikeouts.

To be fair, the entire Padres' offense had a rough day at the office, as they mustered only five hits and failed to scratch out a run against Hyun-Jin Ryu and company. For the season, he's now slashing just .231/.297/.364 with seven homers, 25 RBI and six stolen bases. He remains irrelevant for fantasy purposes.

Cory Spangenberg homered and walked twice against the Angels on Wednesday.

Spangenberg isn't a very good player, but he's hot at the moment, having hit .406 with five extra-bats in 32 at-bats over his last 12 games. The Padres will keep him in the lineup until he cools off, even though that means playing him at second since Wil Myers is at third.

Padres recalled INF/OF Cory Spangenberg from Triple-A El Paso.

Spangenberg is sporting an ugly .232/.264/.378 batting line in the majors this season. He'll back up at multiple positions.

Padres optioned INF Cory Spangenberg to Triple-A El Paso.

Spangenberg has batted only .232/.264/.378 over 65 games for the Pads and finds himself back in the minors for the second time this season. Christian Villanueva will see a few more starts at third base with Spangenberg out of the picture.

Cory Spangenberg went 2-for-4 with a run scored in Tuesday's 4-2 loss against the Athletics.

Spangenberg was the only Padres player to bring his hitting shoes to Petco Park, posting the only multi-hit game for the home side. All eight San Diego starting batters struck out at least once in the game, including one by Spangenberg. Despite the two-hit game he is still batting just .232 overall. However, he is enjoying his best month of the season, hitting .320 (16-for-50) to raise his average from .182 since flipping the calendar from May.

Corey Spangenberg contributed two hits Wednesday in the Padres’ win over Atlanta.

Spangenberg drove in the Padres’ first run with an RBI triple in the second inning and scored later in the frame on a single by Manuel Margot. He chipped in with a single of his own in the eighth, but was stranded at second base. The 27-year-old has shown signs of life with five hits in his last four contests, but he’s still hitting below the Mendoza line with 39 strikeouts in 107 at-bats this year.

Cory Spangenberg came on as a defensive replacement Tuesday against Atlanta, going hitless in two at-bats with a strikeout.

Spangenberg was thrust into action as a relief pitcher in the ninth inning of the 14-1 loss, allowing one earned run, two hits and a walk in his 15-pitch appearance on the hill. His pitching wasn't nearly as poor as his hitting has been, as he is batting just .194 on the season. Spangenberg's fantasy appeal is rather negligible at the moment.

Cory Spangenberg collected his fifth homer and first triple Monday against the Braves.

Spangenberg is getting extra playing time with Christian Villanueva banged up, and he's now homered in back-to-back games. It still leaves him at .188 with a 36/3 K/BB ratio in 101 at-bats for the year, so he has a ways to go.

Cory Spangenberg went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in the loss to the Reds on Friday.

Spangenberg has been positively dreadful this year, but the Padres keep using him; he's started four of the team's last six games while hitting either second or fifth. Meanwhile, he's batting .174 with a 34/3 K/BB ratio in 92 at-bats. He's not an asset defensively, either.

Padres recalled INF/OF Cory Spangenberg from Triple-A El Paso.

Spangenberg will take the place of Chase Headley, who was designated for assignment in a corresponding move. Spangenberg was hitting .293/.328/.534 in 13 games at Triple-A prior to the promotion. He'll fill in all over the diamond for the Pads.

Padres optioned INF/OF Cory Spangenberg to Triple-A El Paso.

Spangenberg is batting just .196/.237/.357 this season and had seen his playing time really dwindle recently.
