Date:

Hector Sanchez (foot) has been cleared to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A El Paso.

He'll remain with El-Paso through the weekend before likely returning to the Padres' active roster early next week. Assuming no setbacks. Sanchez has been on the disabled list since May 6 because of a right foot contusion. It's possible San Diego will opt to keep Luis Torrens as the backup to starting catcher Austin Hedges.
May 18 - 1:57 PM

Hector Sanchez (foot) caught a bullpen session Monday.

Sanchez will also attempt to go through a full workout. He appears to be close to returning from his bruised foot.
May 15 - 7:14 PM

Padres placed C Hector Sanchez on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to May 6, with a right foot contusion.

Sanchez fouled a ball off the foot Friday and is apparently still pretty sore. Luis Torrens will be Austin Hedges' backup.
May 7 - 3:08 PM

Hector Sanchez was lifted from Friday's game against the Dodgers with a right foot contusion.

Sanchez fouled a ball off of his foot and was pulled for precautionary purposes, getting replaced by Austin Hedges. He should be considered day-to-day.
May 6 - 12:39 AM

Hector Sanchez clubbed a game-tying two-run homer off of Mark Melancon in the ninth inning on Sunday.

It was his only at-bat in the contest, and he certainly made the most of it by victimizing his former teammates. Sanchez is hitting just .133/.235/.333 with one homer and three RBI in his limited action this season.
Apr 30 - 7:35 PM

Padres activated catcher Hector Sanchez from the seven-day concussion disabled list.

Sanchez will share backup reps with Luis Torrens behind Austin Hedges and serve as a pinch-hitter.
Apr 14 - 3:51 PM

Padres placed C Hector Sanchez on the 7-day concussion disabled list.

Sanchez left Thursday's game versus the Dodgers due to dizziness and apparently didn't pass concussion protocol. He has a history of concussions, which makes the situation a bit scary. Luis Torrens will now be Austin Hedges' main backup at catcher, although pitcher/catcher hybrid Christian Bethancourt is also on the roster.
Apr 7 - 3:32 PM

Hector Sanchez left Thursday's game against the Dodgers with dizziness.

The Padres originally called his exit precautionary but now Sanchez is being treated for concussion-like symptoms. Obviously there was no reason to keep him in with the Padres getting blown out. Luis Torrens took Sanchez's place behind the plate in the seventh inning. Sanchez went 0-for-3 with a strikeout before exiting. Consider him day-to-day.
Apr 6 - 6:39 PM

Padres purchased the contract of C Hector Sanchez from Triple-A El Paso.

Sanchez hit .250/.279/.550 with three homers and seven RBI over 40 at-bats during Cactus League play. He'll likely serve as the primary backup behind starter Austin Hedges while Christian Bethancourt works out of the Padres' bullpen.
Apr 1 - 2:22 PM

Padres manager Andy Green said Sunday that Hector Sanchez is making a "very, very strong case" to be on the Opening Day roster.

The Padres will head into the season with Austin Hedges as their starting catcher. The Padres could get away with carrying a third catcher if they keep Christian Bethancourt on the roster, as he's also working as a bullpen option this spring and would provide the necessary roster flexibility.
Mar 19 - 8:11 PM

Hector Sanchez fouled a ball off his foot Wednesday, but X-rays came back negative.

He'll be held out of drills for a day or two. Sanchez was non-tendered by the Padres in early December and then eventually re-signed to a non-guaranteed minor league deal. He's organizational depth at catcher for San Diego.
Feb 23 - 11:11 AM

Padres re-signed C Hector Sanchez to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Sanchez was non-tendered by the Padres at the beginning of December, but he didn't find any better destinations out there. The 27-year-old will operate as emergency depth at catcher for San Diego in 2017. He is a .241/.278/.354 career hitter in the majors.

Padres non-tendered C Hector Sanchez.

While not the biggest name of the six players that the Padres non-tendered on Friday, Sanchez could make for an intriguing option on the free agent market. The 27-year-old has hit .241/.278/.354 with 13 homers and 95 RBI over 646 plate appearances in his major league career.

Hector Sanchez went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer Monday as the Padres topped the Giants 4-0.

This had to feel pretty good for Sanchez, a once well-regarded catching prospect who has struggled to find work after his five years of shutting between San Francisco and the Giants' Triple-A affiliate. Sanchez, who is playing for the Padres because the team doesn't want to have to pay Austin Hedges what he'll be worth beginning in 2019, has three homers in just 37 at-bats.
