Padres manager Bud Black won't rule out Anthony Bass getting a start before the end of the season.

Bass has appeared only in relief since being activated from the disabled list earlier this month, but his shoulder feels fine and he could be ready to stretch it out. He's posted a 4.82 ERA in 14 starts this season.

Anthony Bass, San Diego's fifth pitcher of the ninth inning, struck out the only Diamondback he faced Thursday to earn his first career save.

What better demonstration of the excess of September than the Padres using five relievers to protect a one-run lead in a completely meaningless game. Luke Gregerson started the ninth, but was pulled after giving up a leadoff single. After Joe Thatcher issued a walk, Nick Vincent, Tommy Layne and Bass all retired one batter apiece to end the 6-5 game.

Anthony Bass (shoulder) threw a simulated game Friday and is now expected to head to Triple-A Tucson to begin a rehab assignment.

Out since mid-June, Bass will likely need multiple rehab appearances before rejoining the Padres' rotation. The team had been targeting a late August return, but September is probably more likely.

Anthony Bass (shoulder) threw a successful 30-pitch bullpen session on Wednesday afternoon.

Bass will fly to the Padres' spring training complex in Arizona later this week for another bullpen workout and could soon begin throwing simulated games. He's on track to return from the disabled list before the end of August.

Bass had a setback last month, but he resumed a throwing program this week. He'll likely need to make it through a couple of mound sessions and a simulated game or batting practice before being cleared for a minor league rehab assignment. The 24-year-old right-hander has been out since mid-June with shoulder issues.

More specifics aren't available, but we're guessing he's just doing some long-toss to this point. It's not clear how far he is away from a return to the Padres rotation, but it seems doubtful we'll see him before the end of the month.

Padres placed RHP Anthony Bass on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 21, with right shoulder inflammation.

Bass reported improvement with his shoulder Saturday, but he's still not healthy enough to make his scheduled start Tuesday. It's not clear at this point how long he'll be sidelined. The Padres haven't announced a replacement for Tuesday, but Matt Palmer, Anthony Reyes and Kip Wells are options at Triple-A.

The Padres have not yet decided whether Anthony Bass (shoulder) will make his scheduled start Tuesday.

Bass said his shoulder was "feeling better" Saturday, but that might not be enough to convince the Padres he's ready. "Now we're nearing the point where we need to make a decision on Tuesday's starter," said manager Bud Black. "Anthony's getting treatment, so we'll see how it plays out. We want to avoid the disabled list." Andrew Cashner isn't under consideration, as he just pitched Saturday. Matt Palmer, Anthony Reyes and Kip Wells are options at Triple-A.

Anthony Bass - R - Padres

Anthony Bass was scheduled to have his right shoulder examined on Friday.

Bass left Wednesday's start with right shoulder inflammation and visited with Padres team physician Dr. Heinz Hoenecke on Thursday. He mentioned Friday that it wasn't the typical soreness he feels after a start. As of now, Bass is scheduled to make his next start Tuesday against the Astros, but that's obviously subject to change. Fantasy owners would be wise to look for alternatives for next week.
