Mike Rouse will open the season as the Indians primary utilityman.

Rouse outperformed Joe Inglett, Hector Luna and Luis Rivas to land the job. He batted .356 average with four doubles and two home runs this spring. "Our primary criteria was consistent defense in the middle," GM Mark Shapiro said. "From Day One, Mike started distancing himself from everyone else, especially at shortstop."

Mike Rouse upped his spring average to .368 with three doubles on Sunday.

He's slugging .684 in 38 at-bats. All signs point to Rouse becoming the Indians' utilityman. He's aided by being out of options, while Luis Rivas can't be sent back to the minors.

Mike Rouse sat out Friday's game after being hit on the right foot with a Seth McClung fastball Thursday.

Rouse had to come out of the game, but X-rays were not required. "He's gonna be OK," manager Eric Wedge said. "He's moving around out there." Rouse is competing for a utilityman spot.

Mike Rouse had a three-run homer off John Thomson and a walk Wednesday versus the Blue Jays.

Rouse is 7-for-26 with a pair of homers. A more adept shortstop than either Hector Luna or Joe Inglett, he has a chance of making the Indians as a utlityman.

Indians claimed infielder Mike Rouse off waivers from the Athletics.

Rouse, 26, was bumped from Oakland's 40-man roster last week after hitting .258/.347/.377 in 345 at-bats for Triple-A Sacramento this season. He's a future utilityman at best, and his chances of making it appeared quite a bit better a couple of years ago.

Athletics designated infielder Mike Rouse for assignment.

Rather than call up Rouse, the A's again elected for D'Angelo Jimenez as an infield reserve. The 26-year-old Rouse looked like an interesting prospect a couple of years ago, but he failed to master Triple-A in three tries. He hit just .258/.347/.377 in 345 at-bats for Sacramento this year. Another club might consider putting in a waiver claim.

Mike Rouse could be recalled by Oakland now that Triple-A Sacramento's season has ended.

The A's are expected to bring up an infielder and it should be either Rouse or D'Angelo Jimenez. Rouse had a minor back injury last week or he might have already been recalled.

Athletics optioned infielder Mike Rouse to Triple-A Sacramento.

After starting three days in a row immediately following his callup, Rouse was given little playing time the last couple of weeks. He ended up at .292/.346/.417 in 24 at-bats.

Mike Rouse went 3-for-3 with a walk Friday against the Yankees in a major league debut.

The A's did just fine without Eric Chavez, Bobby Crosby and Mark Ellis tonight. Antonio Perez, who filled in for Chavez at third base, hit a two-run homer off Randy Johnson for just his second hit of the season. Rouse's performance should earn him a second start on Saturday even if Chavez or Crosby returns.

Athletics recalled infielder Mike Rouse from Triple-A Sacramento.

Rouse's stock has fallen the last couple of years, and he was hitting an unspectacular .274/.363/.399 in 168 at-bats for Sacramento. That he's on the 40-man roster and Keith Ginter isn't was the main reason he was called up. The A's have him starting at second base tonight, but it's unlikely that he'll have any fantasy value.

Triple-A Sacramento's Mike Rouse was activated from the disabled list on Friday.

Rouse had been out since June 14 with a strained lower back.

Mike Rouse is back on Triple-A Sacramento's disabled list because of a strained lower back.

The same problem caused him to miss two weeks in April. Rouse, who had a big year in Double-A in 2003, is batting just .215/.331/.331 in 41 games for Sacramento.

Mike Rouse rejoined Triple-A Sacramento's lineup last night and went 0-for-3 while playing five innings at shortstop.

He had been on the DL since April 14 with a sore back.
Fri, Apr 30, 2004 04:33:00 PM

A's prospect Mike Rouse hasn't played since April 15 because of a sore back.

Rouse, who would probably be called up if Bobby Crosby landed on the DL this year, is considered day-to-day.
