The 29-year-old passed through waivers unclaimed and will continue to function as organizational depth for the Blue Jays. Between two stops at Triple-A this season, he's hitting .282/.371/.465 with 15 homers and 76 RBI in 106 games.

He was sent down to make room for Alex Presley's return from the disabled list. Hague is hitting .229 (16-for-70) with two doubles and seven RBI in 30 games at the major league level this season. He should be back later this summer.

Hague saw semi-regular starts with the Pirates earlier this year and will look to reestablish himself behind Casey McGehee. He's returning to a .235/.278/.265 batting line in 28 games this season.

Matt Hague doubled home the Pirates' only two runs in Wednesday's 2-1 win over the Reds.

He tagged Johnny Cueto in the sixth inning. Getting a chance to "string together starts" in the words of Bucs manager Clint Hurdle, Hague has now hit safely in six straight games since being recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis on May 25, driving in three runs in the process. Meet your new flier in exceptionally deep NL-only leagues.

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said Friday that Matt Hague will get a chance "to string together starts" at first base.

In turn, Casey McGehee and Garrett Jones will have reduced roles. Hague, 26, was called up from the minors Friday after batting .278/.325/.333 with one homer over his first 144 at-bats with Triple-A Indianapolis this season. There's not a lot of upside here, but he's worth a look in NL-only leagues if given regular at-bats.
