Matt Hague doubled three times in four at-bats Sunday against the Pirates.

It's still hard to imagine Hague making the Twins, but he's had a beck of a spring so far, going 9-for-18 with seven extra-base hits. He actually did this once before, hitting seven homers in 55 at-bats for the Pirates in the spring of 2012. It did get him a spot on the team... for two weeks. He was sent down on April 14 and ended up with 70 major league at-bats (hitting .229/.270/.257) over the course of the year.

Matt Hague hit a two-run homer in the top of the eight in the Twins' 4-2 win over the Nationals on Sunday.

Hague, back in the U.S. after a year in Japan, is 6-for-13 this spring. He's a major long shot to make the Twins -- it'd probably take both Kennys Vargas and Byung Ho Park getting sent down -- but he's a useful guy to have around as insurance. He was last seen in the U.S. posting an .885 OPS for Triple-A Buffalo in 2015.

Twins signed 1B/3B Matt Hague to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Hague, who previously has appeared in the majors with the Blue Jays and Pirates, appeared in 30 games with the Hanshin Tigers of Japan's Central League last season while batting .231/.339/.346 with two home runs and 11 RBI over 124 plate appearances. He'll provide corner infield depth for the Twins in his return to the states.

The deal is not yet official, but Hague has been removed from Toronto's 40-man roster. Hague earned a September call-up with the Blue Jays this season after winning the International League MVP Award by batting .338/.416/.468 with 11 home runs and 92 RBI over 136 games with Triple-A Buffalo. He turned 30 in August.
