Pirates and SS Jordy Mercer avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $2.075 million contract.
It's a bit more than the $1.8 million projected him to earn. Mercer hit .244/.293/.320 with three homers last season for the Pirates and will open the season as the starting shortstop while Jung Ho Kang (knee) recovers. Jan 15 - 11:30 AM

Jordy Mercer slammed a three-run homer Saturday against the Cubs.

His fifth-inning blast was the big blow against Jason Hammel. It was just his third home run in 109 games this season. The 29-year-old is batting just .249/.300/.328 this season, but the Pirates are looking for him to carry the load at shortstop again with Jung Ho Kang (knee) sidelined.

Jordy Mercer went 2-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored Thursday against the Brewers.

Mercer was making his sixth start since coming off the DL on June 23. If he hits, it'll give the Pirates more reason to play Jung-Ho Kang at third. He is the superior defense shortstop, after all.

Pirates activated INF Jordy Mercer from the 15-day disabled list.

He's active and in uniform for Sunday's game against the Giants, though he's on the bench with Jung Ho Kang remaining at shortstop. Before landing on the shelf with a sprained MCL, Mercer was hitting .242/.289/.315 with two homers and 19 RBI in 80 games.

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said Thursday that Jordy Mercer (knee) could return this weekend.

Mercer is 3-for-17 (.176) through five rehab games with Triple-A Indianapolis. The 28-year-old has been sidelined for the past month with a left knee MCL sprain and a leg contusion.

Jordy Mercer (knee) is 3-for-13 through four minor league rehab games with Triple-A Indianapolis.

Mercer, who landed on the disabled list about a month ago with a left knee MCL sprain and a leg contusion, played seven innings on Saturday and Sunday. He's not as far along in his rehab as Josh Harrison (thumb), but he's likely to rejoin the Pirates by the end of the month.

Jordy Mercer (knee) has been cleared to begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Indianapolis.

The news comes a few days earlier than expected. Mercer suffered a severe lower leg contusion and MCL sprain late last month on a Carlos Gomez takeout slide. "We kind of took baby steps all the way up to the last couple days, when we really extended and pushed, and it’s responded really well," Mercer said Sunday. "There’s nothing else we or I need to do to confirm or tell myself I’m ready. We’ve checked all those boxes."

Jordy Mercer (knee) is expected to begin a rehab assignment next Friday at Triple-A Indianapolis.

He's only a couple weeks removed from a left lower leg contusion and MCL sprain, as he seems to have progressed more quickly than expected. It's not known how many rehab games Mercer will need before being activated.

Pirates placed SS Jordy Mercer on the 15-day disabled list with a lower leg contusion and MCL sprain.

Mercer suffered the injuries Sunday when Carlos Gomez of the Brewers took him out in front of second base. He is expected to miss approximately six weeks. Jung Ho Kang is taking over at shortstop for the Bucs and Brent Morel has arrived from Triple-A Indianapolis to provide depth at third base.

Jordy Mercer is heading back to Pittsburgh to have his knee examined by team doctors.

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle wouldn't comment on a potential diagnosis, but the left knee injury that he sustained in Sunday's contest against the Brewers is believed to be serious. The team should have an update on his status on Monday.

Jordy Mercer was carted off the field with an apparent serious left knee injury in Sunday's game versus the Brewers.

Carlos Gomez slid into Mercer's knee well away from the second-base bag as he looked to break up a double play. Mercer couldn't put any weight on his leg before being carted away, so it certainly looks like an injury that will keep him out for a long time.

Jordy Mercer went 3-for-4 with an RBI double in Sunday's loss to the Braves.

Mercer single-handedly accounted for most of the Pirates' offense on the afternoon, collecting three of the team's six hits and knocking in their only run. The multi-hit game was Mercer's fourth in a row, raising his average from .212 to .240. Despite struggling offensively for most of the year, Mercer remains the Pirates' everyday shortstop.

Jordy Mercer delivered a walkoff RBI double in the 10th inning on Friday, leading the Pirates to a 3-2 victory over the visiting Braves.

Mercer finished the night 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles, including the game-winner. He has ceded significant playing time to Jung Ho Kang in recent weeks and even with the three-hit effort he's hitting just .225/.276/.306 on the season with 14 RBI. For at least one night though, he got to play the role of hero, and perhaps it's the type of game he needed to get rolling.

Jordy Mercer is not in Tuesday's lineup against the Twins.

Jung Ho Kang will make the start at shortstop and bat fifth against Ricky Nolasco. Mercer isn't doing much to hold off Kang with a .176/.231/.204 batting line through 31 games.

Jordy Mercer is not in the Pirates' lineup Sunday.

Jung Ho Kang has started over Mercer each of the three games of the weekend series in Chicago. Mercer is hitting just .176/.231/.204 on the season.
