Jordy Mercer mashed a solo homer and drove in three runs Tuesday against the Braves.

Mercer took R.A. Dickey over the boards in the sixth inning and has now reached base in five of nine career plate appearances versus the knuckleballer. He then put the Pirates ahead in the top of the ninth following a long rain delay, but Pittsburgh coughed up the lead in the bottom of the frame. Mercer is sporting an unappetizing .215/.323/.299 batting line on the season.
May 24 - 1:55 AM

Jordy Mercer was removed from Monday's game against the Braves due to discomfort in his right hand.

Mercer is considered day-to-day. He sustained the injury when he was hit in the hand by a groundball. Look for him to return to the Pirates' lineup in a day or two.
May 22 - 10:26 PM

Jordy Mercer singled three times in four trips to the plate Tuesday against the Cardinals.

The Pirates had 11 hits on the night, but nine of them were singles and they didn't draw any walks, which added up to just one run. It's been a rough go of it so far at the plate for Mercer, who is hitting only .229/.315/.250.
Apr 18 - 11:39 PM

Jordy Mercer finished 0-for-3 in the Pirates' loss to the Cardinals on Monday.

Mercer hit a game-tying RBI single in the eighth inning of Sunday's win over the Cubs, helping to finish off a big three-game sweep of the defending champs at Wrigley Field, but the veteran shortstop was retired in all three of his plate appearances against Cardinals starter Lance Lynn on Monday night in St. Louis. Mercer is batting just .182/.280/.205 on the season.
Apr 17 - 9:24 PM

Jody Mercer went 1-for-4 with a game-tying eighth-inning RBI single in Sunday's win over the Cubs.

Mercer committed a costly fielding error in the seventh inning which allowed the Cubs to score the first run of the game, but he made up for his blunder against Koji Uehara with the bases loaded and nobody out in the eighth inning. His dunk single knotted up the game at 1-1. The Pirates would take an 3-1 lead by the time the dust settled on the frame. With a career .256/.313/.374 triple-slash in the majors, Mercer holds no fantasy intrigue.
Apr 16 - 5:34 PM

Jordy Mercer hit a grand slam Thursday in the Pirates' 11-1 rout of the Tigers.

With Jung Ho Kang no longer an option at shortstop, Mercer had the position all to himself last year and hit .256 with 11 homers in 149 games. He'll remain a fixture this year, and while he'll probably hit eighth against righties, he might find himself hitting first or second versus lefties.

Pirates and SS Jordy Mercer avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $4.325 million contract.

Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported last week that the Pirates and Mercer were discussing a multi-year extension, but it appears they'll settle for the one year for now. He's not eligible for free agency until after 2018, so there's still plenty of time to hammer out a long-term deal.
Jan 13 - 11:48 AM

According to Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, the Pirates have discussed a multi-year contract extension with shortstop Jordy Mercer.

No deal is imminent, as Biertempfel notes that the talks have only been preliminary. The 30-year-old is arbitration-eligible for the second time this offseason and is expected to earn a nice raise through arbitration over the $2.075 million that he earned in 2016. If a deal is done, it would likely buy out his final two years of arbitration and possibly more. Mercer slashed .256/.328/.374 with 11 homers and 59 RBI in 149 games for the Pirates in 2016.
Jan 8 - 9:06 PM

Jordy Mercer (forearm) is back in the Pirates' lineup Sunday.

It's his first start since Wednesday as Mercer has battled a flexor issue in his right arm. He's at shortstop and batting sixth against A.J. Cole and the Nationals.

Jordy Mercer (forearm) fouled out as a pinch hitter during Friday's come-from-behind victory over the Nationals.

Mercer was scratched from Friday's lineup due to discomfort in his right forearm and was held out on Friday as well. The fact that he was able to appear as a pinch hitter bodes well for his status going forward and he should return to the starting lineup at some point over the weekend.

Jordy Mercer was scratched from Thursday's lineup with right forearm discomfort.

It's unclear at this point whether it's something that could keep him out for more than just the one game. Sean Rodriguez will slide over from second base to shortstop for Mercer, while Adam Frazier has entered the lineup at second.

Jordy Mercer hit a three-run home run in Thursday's lopsided win over the Phillies.

Mercer hit one of the club's four jacks against Phillies starter Jerad Eickhoff on the evening, ending the right-hander's night with the thee-run shot. The homer was Mercer's 11th of the season, giving him 56 RBI. It will likely go down as a career year offensively for the 30-year-old, who's hitting .259/.331/.384 overall.

Jordy Mercer blasted a grand slam in the sixth inning on Thursday, powering the Pirates to a 5-3 victory over Matt Garza and the Brewers.

Garza and Pirates' starter Ryan Vogelsong had been engaged in a scoreless pitcher's duel through five innings, until Mercer and the Pirates erupted in the sixth inning. It was Mercer's lone hit in four at-bats on the evening. The lefty-masher is now hitting .264/.341/.386 with 10 homers and 49 RBI on the season.

Jordy Mercer went 3-for-5 with an RBI and scored three times on Wednesday.

Mercer has been good enough to be rostered in fantasy leagues this year. He is batting .282/.361/.393 with six home runs, 40 runs and 35 RBI. That's not good enough to start for a championship-caliber fantasy team but he can be useful as a backup.
