Jordy Mercer got a start in the two hole on Thursday and went 0-for-2 against the Yankees.
It was interesting to hear about the Pirates' recent interest in Arizona's Didi Gregorius as a shortstop option. The 27-year-old Mercer looked perfectly legit last year, but he didn't project as a future regular before that and the Pirates still apparently harbor some doubts. Mercer is hitting .231 with no homers in 39 at-bats this spring. He figures to bat eighth most of the time. Mar 27 - 4:02 PM

Jordy Mercer is starting at shortstop for the Pirates in Friday's Game 2 of the NLDS against the Cardinals.

Mercer gives the Pirates more offense than Clint Barmes, who also struggled in the field in Game 1. The 26-year-old hit .285/.336/.435 with eight home runs over 103 games for the Bucs this season and seized most of the starts at short down the stretch.

Jordy Mercer finished 3-for-4 with a triple, home run and two runs scored in Sunday's victory in Cincinnati.

Mercer didn't project as a long-term piece in Pittsburgh's plans coming into the season, and spent some at Triple-A in the early portion of the campaign, but he never stopped producing and eventually convinced Clint Hurdle to bench Clint Barmes. The 26-year-old Mercer ran with the starting shortstop gig, posting an impressive .285/.336/.435 slash line with eight homers, 27 RBI, 33 runs and three steals in 333 at-bats.

Jordy Mercer delivered an RBI double in the eighth Thursday in the win over the Cubs.

Mercer has been a beast in the two hole for the Pirates, hitting .363 with three homers and 14 doubles in 27 games. He'd been losing some playing time at shortstop of late, but the fact that he's going 6-for-9 with three doubles in his last two starts should help his cause.

Jordy Mercer went 3-for-4 with an RBI double, a run scored, and a walk Thursday against the Nationals.

Mercer has now hit safely in 10 straight games, though this was only his third multi-hit game during the streak. The 26-year-old started at second base on Thursday, but he should get most of his playing time at shortstop now that Neil Walker is back from the disabled list.

Jordy Mercer delivered a walk-off RBI single in a 3-2 win over the Mets in 11 innings on Friday night.

Mercer sneaked one through the middle of the infield to bring home Andrew McCutchen with the winning run. He got the hit off Gonzalez Germen, who was making his major league debut. Meanwhile, Bobby Parnell was left unused in the bullpen. It was not Terry Collins' best moment.

Jordy Mercer is just 3-for-23 with no extra-base hits in July.

Mercer entered the month with a .284 average, but his cold streak has dropped that number to .261. Pittsburgh's starting shortstop offers more on the field than Clint Barmes, and the club doesn't figure to give up on the youngster prematurely, but Mercer isn't worth a mixed league roster spot at the moment.

Jordy Mercer went 3-for-4 with a homer, a stolen base, two RBI and two runs scored in Friday's victory against the Angels.

One day after going 0-for-5 against the Reds, Mercer was dropped to the nine hole. In response, he tormented Los Angeles, picking up his first RBI since May 29 and his first homer since May 11. With an attractive .290/.339/.495 slash line and four homers and three stolen bases in 107 at-bats, Pittsburgh's starting shortstop has planted himself firmly on mixed league radars.

Jordy Mercer went 0-for-5 Thursday against the Reds.

Now the club's starting shortstop, the 26-year-old is batting .272/.324/.456 with three homers and two steals over 103 at-bats. Prior to Thursday's rough night, Mercer was batting .308 in June.

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said Monday that Jordy Mercer will receive the bulk of the playing time at shortstop moving forward.

Clint Barmes began the year as the starter, but he's batting a pathetic .198/.231/.265 through 54 games this season. Meanwhile, Mercer has been productive when given the opportunity. The 26-year-old doesn't project as a long-term piece, but he's worth owning in NL-only leagues for now.

Jordy Mercer went 0-for-3 Thursday in a loss to the Giants.

Mercer went 5-for-10 over his previous two games. He's only hitting .268 with a .286 OBP over 82 at-bats, but the utility man has a .476 slugging percentage thanks to 10 extra-base hits. Mercer is useful depth in NL-only leagues.

Pirates recalled INF Jordy Mercer from Triple-A Indianapolis.

Mercer was sent down to the minors earlier this week, but he's eligible to return now that John McDonald (back) has been placed on the disabled list. The 26-year-old is hitting .258 (8-for-31) with three home runs and four RBI in nine games with the Pirates this season.

Pirates optioned INF Jordy Mercer to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Mercer hit .258 with a .281 on-base percentage in 32 plate appearances during his 10-day stay with the Bucs. They should give him another shot later this season.

The Pirates are expected to option INF Jordy Mercer to Triple-A Indianapolis on Monday.

Mercer has been filling in for Neil Walker at second base and hit .276 (8-for-29) with two doubles, three home runs and four RBI in eight games with the Pirates. He's no longer needed with Walker set to come off the disabled list Monday. The Pirates' only other option would be to designate John McDonald for assignment.
Sun, May 12, 2013 04:26:00 PM

Jordy Mercer clubbed two solo homers Saturday in a win over the Mets.

Mercer hit one against Jon Niese in the fifth inning and another against Rob Carson in the eighth. The 26-year-old has received most of the playing time at second base recently, but Neil Walker (hand) should be ready to come off the disabled list early next week.
