Pirates optioned INF Jordy Mercer to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Mercer hit .258 with a .281 on-base percentage in 32 plate appearances during his 10-day stay with the Bucs. They should give him another shot later this season.

The Pirates are expected to option INF Jordy Mercer to Triple-A Indianapolis on Monday.

Mercer has been filling in for Neil Walker at second base and hit .276 (8-for-29) with two doubles, three home runs and four RBI in eight games with the Pirates. He's no longer needed with Walker set to come off the disabled list Monday. The Pirates' only other option would be to designate John McDonald for assignment.

Jordy Mercer - 2B - Pirates

Jordy Mercer clubbed two solo homers Saturday in a win over the Mets.

Mercer hit one against Jon Niese in the fifth inning and another against Rob Carson in the eighth. The 26-year-old has received most of the playing time at second base recently, but Neil Walker (hand) should be ready to come off the disabled list early next week.

Jordy Mercer blasted a two-run homer on Friday, powering the Pirates to a 3-1 victory over the Nationals.

Mercer, who was recalled earlier in the day when Neil Walker hit the disabled list, certainly made a strong first impression. His fifth inning blast off Ross Detwiler dropped just over the wall in left field and out of the reach of the outstretched glove of Bryce Harper. It was his only hit in four trips to the plate on the evening, but was the difference maker in the ballgame. He may continue to get looks at second base while Walker is sidelined, but don't look for much fantasy value.

Mercer will replace Neil Walker (finger) on the active roster. The 26-year-old batted .210 (13-for-62) with one home run and five RBI in 42 games with the Pirates last season and can be ignored in fantasy leagues.

Pirates placed INF Jordy Mercer on the paternity leave list.

Mercer can remain on the paternity leave list for 24 to 72 hours. There was some speculation that the 25-year-old infielder would be placed on the disabled list after he was hit in the wrist by a pitch on Saturday, but he managed to play in Sunday's extra-inning affair.

Jordy Mercer (wrist) might require a trip to the disabled list.

It was reported previously that Mercer was placed on paternity leave, but the Pirates won't make that move until after Sunday's game, if at all. Mercer was hit on his wrist by a pitch Saturday, and he might need at least a couple weeks of down time. Starling Marte (oblique) is also injured, and Jose Tabata has been summoned from Triple-A Indianapolis but not officially called up yet, as the Pirates are still trying to decide what moves to make.

Mercer played very little while up with the club for a few weeks earlier this season, picking up just one hit in nine at-bats. He won't be in line for much playing time this time around, either.

He'll replace Yamaico Navarro on the active roster. Mercer, 25, was hitting .303/.379/.417 with three homers, 22 RBI and a .796 OPS over his first 198 plate appearances at the Triple-A level this year. He'll presumably function as a backup infielder.

Pirates purchased the contract of INF Jordy Mercer from Triple-A Indianapolis.

Mercer, 25, batted .255/.317/.440 with 19 home runs, 69 RBI, nine stolen bases and a .757 OPS over 551 plate appearances this season between Double- and Triple-A. He can play both middle infield positions and could be ready for the major league level at some point next season.
