Jordy Mercer is heading back to Pittsburgh to have his knee examined by team doctors.

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle wouldn't comment on a potential diagnosis, but the left knee injury that he sustained in Sunday's contest against the Brewers is believed to be serious. The team should have an update on his status on Monday.
Jul 19 - 5:39 PM

Jordy Mercer was carted off the field with an apparent serious left knee injury in Sunday's game versus the Brewers.

Carlos Gomez slid into Mercer's knee well away from the second-base bag as he looked to break up a double play. Mercer couldn't put any weight on his leg before being carted away, so it certainly looks like an injury that will keep him out for a long time.

Jordy Mercer went 3-for-4 with an RBI double in Sunday's loss to the Braves.

Mercer single-handedly accounted for most of the Pirates' offense on the afternoon, collecting three of the team's six hits and knocking in their only run. The multi-hit game was Mercer's fourth in a row, raising his average from .212 to .240. Despite struggling offensively for most of the year, Mercer remains the Pirates' everyday shortstop.
Jun 28 - 4:26 PM

Jordy Mercer delivered a walkoff RBI double in the 10th inning on Friday, leading the Pirates to a 3-2 victory over the visiting Braves.

Mercer finished the night 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles, including the game-winner. He has ceded significant playing time to Jung Ho Kang in recent weeks and even with the three-hit effort he's hitting just .225/.276/.306 on the season with 14 RBI. For at least one night though, he got to play the role of hero, and perhaps it's the type of game he needed to get rolling.
Jun 26 - 11:10 PM

Jung Ho Kang will make the start at shortstop and bat fifth against Ricky Nolasco. Mercer isn't doing much to hold off Kang with a .176/.231/.204 batting line through 31 games.

In addition to an X-ray, he's also had an MRI with contrast dye and a cardiac MRI, both of which came back clean. Mercer warmed up prior to Tuesday's game and planned to do some throwing, as well, although he hasn't been cleared to hit yet. Jung Ho Kang will continue to fill in at shortstop until Mercer is ready.
