Jordy Mercer (knee) is hoping to play in the Pirates' final regular-season series this weekend at Nationals Park.

Mercer has been sidelined since last Saturday with tendinitis in his left knee, an ailment that dates back more than a month. "He wants to finish. He wants to be out there and play," Pirates trainer Todd Tomczyk said Wednesday. "We're evaluating literally hourly and daily to help him achieve that goal."

Jordy Mercer (knee) is absent from the Pirates' lineup Sunday.

Mercer was pulled from Saturday's game with tendinitis in his left knee, an ailment he's been dealing with for a while. He's day-to-day. Max Moroff is at shortstop Sunday. The Pirates are sitting a host of other regulars Sunday, as well, as Josh Bell, Gregory Polanco, David Freese and Adam Frazier are all on the bench.

Jordy Mercer finished 3-for-3 with a double, triple, four RBI and two runs scored to help the Pirates outlast the Cardinals 11-6 on Saturday.

An eight-run first inning was highlighted by Mercer's three-run triple, which landed in front of a sliding Dexter Fowler and skipped under his glove, allowing all three runners to come around to score. Just for good measure, Mercer also swatted an RBI double in the fifth. The 31-year-old already has a career high in homers this year, and with one more run batted in -- he's at 58 following Saturday's game -- he'll tie his single-season high in that category, as well. In all, Mercer is batting .255/.326/.406 with a little over a week left in the season.

Jordy Mercer told reporters after Saturday's game that he's dealing with tendinitis in his left knee.

"It’s alright until I have to leg out a triple or a double or stop," said the 31-year-old shortstop. Mercer made an early exit from Saturday's win over the Cardinals and could see a few days off over the final week of the regular season.
Sep 23 - 11:28 PM

Jordy Mercer had three of the Pirates' six hits and homered for their only run in Monday's loss to the Cubs.

Mercer's August slump had seen him hit .176/.225/.270 over his first 20 games of the month. He's picking it back up some now, going 8-for-13 over his last four games. The homer tonight was his 12th, tying his career high from 2014.

Jordy Mercer launched a two-run homer Friday versus the Rockies.

It was his only hit in five at-bats on the day, but at least it was a big one. Mercer has nine home runs through 92 games, just three shy of his career-high from 2013. He already has a career-best .758 OPS.

Jul 6 - 4:23 PM

Jordy Mercer went 2-for-4 and drove in a run during Wednesday's win over the Phillies.

He tripled to drive in a run in the sixth inning. The 30-year-old veteran is having a career year at the plate, although he is still only on the fringe of fantasy usefulness. He is batting .266/.342/.420 with eight homers and 32 RBI. He has been thrown out in all four of his stolen base attempts this year.
