Jordy Mercer hit a grand slam Thursday in the Pirates' 11-1 rout of the Tigers.
With Jung Ho Kang no longer an option at shortstop, Mercer had the position all to himself last year and hit .256 with 11 homers in 149 games. He'll remain a fixture this year, and while he'll probably hit eighth against righties, he might find himself hitting first or second versus lefties. Mar 2 - 4:30 PM

Pirates and SS Jordy Mercer avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $4.325 million contract.

Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported last week that the Pirates and Mercer were discussing a multi-year extension, but it appears they'll settle for the one year for now. He's not eligible for free agency until after 2018, so there's still plenty of time to hammer out a long-term deal.

According to Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, the Pirates have discussed a multi-year contract extension with shortstop Jordy Mercer.

No deal is imminent, as Biertempfel notes that the talks have only been preliminary. The 30-year-old is arbitration-eligible for the second time this offseason and is expected to earn a nice raise through arbitration over the $2.075 million that he earned in 2016. If a deal is done, it would likely buy out his final two years of arbitration and possibly more. Mercer slashed .256/.328/.374 with 11 homers and 59 RBI in 149 games for the Pirates in 2016.

Jordy Mercer (forearm) is back in the Pirates' lineup Sunday.

It's his first start since Wednesday as Mercer has battled a flexor issue in his right arm. He's at shortstop and batting sixth against A.J. Cole and the Nationals.

Jordy Mercer (forearm) fouled out as a pinch hitter during Friday's come-from-behind victory over the Nationals.

Mercer was scratched from Friday's lineup due to discomfort in his right forearm and was held out on Friday as well. The fact that he was able to appear as a pinch hitter bodes well for his status going forward and he should return to the starting lineup at some point over the weekend.

Jordy Mercer was scratched from Thursday's lineup with right forearm discomfort.

It's unclear at this point whether it's something that could keep him out for more than just the one game. Sean Rodriguez will slide over from second base to shortstop for Mercer, while Adam Frazier has entered the lineup at second.

Jordy Mercer hit a three-run home run in Thursday's lopsided win over the Phillies.

Mercer hit one of the club's four jacks against Phillies starter Jerad Eickhoff on the evening, ending the right-hander's night with the thee-run shot. The homer was Mercer's 11th of the season, giving him 56 RBI. It will likely go down as a career year offensively for the 30-year-old, who's hitting .259/.331/.384 overall.

Jordy Mercer blasted a grand slam in the sixth inning on Thursday, powering the Pirates to a 5-3 victory over Matt Garza and the Brewers.

Garza and Pirates' starter Ryan Vogelsong had been engaged in a scoreless pitcher's duel through five innings, until Mercer and the Pirates erupted in the sixth inning. It was Mercer's lone hit in four at-bats on the evening. The lefty-masher is now hitting .264/.341/.386 with 10 homers and 49 RBI on the season.

Jordy Mercer went 3-for-5 with an RBI and scored three times on Wednesday.

Mercer has been good enough to be rostered in fantasy leagues this year. He is batting .282/.361/.393 with six home runs, 40 runs and 35 RBI. That's not good enough to start for a championship-caliber fantasy team but he can be useful as a backup.

Jordy Mercer went 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBI as the Pirates topped the Athletics 7-3 on Friday.

Mercer upped his on-base percentage to .358 tonight. The six intentional walks helps, but it's not just a product of his batting eighth; he actually has a higher OBP from the other spots in the order, including a .400 mark in 16 games leading off against lefties.

Jordy Mercer (head) went 0-for-3 with two walks Monday in his return to the lineup against the Dodgers.

Mercer left Sunday's game with head and right ear discomfort after sliding into second base to break up a double play, but fortunately he avoided serious injury. He should be good to go moving forward.

Jordy Mercer was forced to leave Sunday's game against the Dodgers with head and right ear discomfort.

Mercer sustained the injury while sliding into second base in an attempt to break up a double play. He'll likely be re-evaluated on Monday, but it doesn't sound as though a trip to the disabled list is in his future.

Jordy Mercer hit his fourth longball of the season on Saturday, a two-run homer off Joe Blanton of the Dodgers.

Mercer started the season like gangbusters, hitting .381 in April. He has cooled off considerably since then however. He has a .724 OPS with 31 runs and 26 RBI on the year.

Jordy Mercer went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored Saturday against the Cubs.

Batting leadoff, Mercer cranked a homer in the first inning against Cubs starter Jon Lester to get the Bucs on the board early. He then led off the third inning with a double and scored later in the frame. Mercer has cooled from his early production, but the 29-year-old is still batting .267/.355/.356 with three homers, 24 RBI and 29 runs scored in 65 games this year.

Jordy Mercer (elbow) went 1-for-3 with a run scored in his return to the lineup Saturday.

Mercer sat out Friday after departing Thursday's contest with a sore left elbow, but it appears he's going to be alright. He's hit .266/.354/.332 for the Pirates this season.
