Tim Federowicz is expected to be sidelined for three to six months after it was revealed he has a complete meniscus tear in his right knee.

The initial diagnosis was a small tear in his lateral meniscus, and the thought was that he would require arthroscopic surgery, so this new news is a tough blow for the Padres and the veteran backstop. Wil Nieves will function as the primary backup behind starting catcher Derek Norris.
Mar 13 - 7:19 PM

Tim Federowicz is expected to undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right knee after an MRI revealed a lateral meniscus tear.

How long he'll be sidelined won't be determined until after the operation is performed. Federowicz had been the favorite to open the season as Derek Norris' backup, but those duties will now likely fall to Wil Nieves.

Tim Federowicz had an MRI on his right knee Monday.

Federowicz left Sunday's Cactus League game with discomfort in his right knee and showed up back at the Padres' spring training complex Monday on crutches. The MRI should provide a proper diagnosis. Federowicz was in line to open the 2015 regular season as San Diego's backup catcher.

Padres acquired C Tim Federowicz from the Dodgers in the Matt Kemp trade.

Federowicz has a strong defensive reputation but has hit just .194/.247/.300 over his first 271 big league plate appearances. With Derek Norris and Ryan Hanigan on the roster, Federowicz is headed to Triple-A to start the season.

Dodgers recalled C Tim Federowicz from Triple-A Albuquerque.

He'll replace the injured A.J. Ellis (ankle) on the active roster. Federowicz is batting just .109 with a .315 OPS in 50 plate appearances with the Dodgers this season and isn't a fantasy option.

Tim Federowicz said Tuesday that he expects to be the Dodgers' primary catcher while A.J. Ellis (knee) is out.

It's possible Federowicz is just expressing confidence, but it's probably safe to assume he's been told to be prepared to play regularly. Drew Butera is also around but should remain in a backup role. Federowicz isn't bad with the stick and could have some deep league value while he's playing regularly.

Dodgers recalled C Tim Federowicz from Triple-A Albuquerque.

Federowicz lost the competition for the Dodgers' backup catcher job this spring, but he'll now get semi-regular playing time behind the plate for Los Angeles with A.J. Ellis out 4-6 weeks following knee surgery.

Dodgers optioned C Tim Federowicz to Triple-A Albuquerque.

The 26-year-old had been expected to serve as the primary backup to A.J. Ellis, though a brutal performance this spring where he hit just .077 (2-for-26) could be the cause for the demotion. Drew Butera will begin the season as the backup catcher for the Dodgers.

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly noted Saturday that Tim Federowicz has the inside track on the team's backup catcher job.

Drew Butera and Miguel Olivo represent his primary competition this spring. The 26-year-old backstop slashed just .231/.275/.356 with four homers and 16 RBI in 160 at-bats for the Dodgers in 2013.

Tim Federowicz delivered a three-run double in the bottom of the eighth as the Dodgers beat the Diamondbacks 5-3 Tuesday in a game marred by a brawl.

The fight came in the seventh after Ian Kennedy hit Zack Greinke in the shoulder with a pitch. It was the fourth HBP of the game and the third that seemed intentional after Kennedy hit Yasiel Puig in the sixth and Greinke hit Miguel Montero in the top of the seventh. Kennedy and Puig were both ejected afterwards, as were Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson and Dodgers hitting coach Mark McGwire. Federowicz's big hit broke the game open against David Hernandez, and Kenley Jansen finished up from there.

Tim Federowicz had a homer and a two-run double against the Rockies on Saturday.

Manager Don Mattingly has made it very, very clear that he prefers Federowicz to Ramon Hernandez as a backup catcher. Today's start was the second he's made in three days since he was recalled from Triple-A. He was 3-for-22 with no RBI before driving in three runs today.
