Tim Federowicz will be designated for assignment by the Cubs on Friday.

That will clear out a roster spot for top catching prospect Willson Contreras, who will join up with the Cubs ahead of Friday afternoon's series opener against the Pirates. Federowicz, 28, is sitting on a .192/.222/.269 batting line through 27 plate appearances in 2016.

Cubs purchased the contract of C Tim Federowicz from Triple-A Iowa.

Federowicz will give the Cubs depth at catcher while Miguel Montero recovers from a back injury. Federowicz could see a good amount of starts over the next two weeks, but he is a .194/.247/.300 career major league hitter.
Apr 28 - 12:08 PM

Cubs signed C Tim Federowicz to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Federowicz missed much of 2015 with a knee injury and hit only .179/.229/.346 at Triple-A over 22 games. The 28-year-old has been a pretty good hitter in the minors prior to last year, though, and is a solid depth guy.

Tim Federowicz underwent arthroscopic knee surgery on Friday to shave down cartilage that had been bothering him.

Federowicz underwent a first procedure in March to repair a torn meniscus. He's expected to be fully healthy and ready to go for spring training where he'll compete for a reserve role with the major league club.

Padres sent C Tim Federowicz outright to Triple-A El Paso.

He cleared waivers after being designated for assignment and will remain in the organization. However, with Derek Norris and Austin Hedges ahead of him on the depth chart, there doesn't appear to be much of a future in San Diego for Federowicz.

Padres designated C Tim Federowicz for assignment.

His 20-day stint on the minor league disabled list was up, and the team was forced to make a decision. He could attract interest on waivers from team's searching for depth behind the plate.

Tim Federowicz (knee) will begin a rehab assignment around the All-Star break.

Working his way back from surgery to repair the meniscus in his right knee, Federowicz will need most, if not all, of his 20-day rehab allotment. He could be an option for the Padres in early August.

Tim Federowicz is expected to be sidelined for three to six months after it was revealed he has a complete meniscus tear in his right knee.

The initial diagnosis was a small tear in his lateral meniscus, and the thought was that he would require arthroscopic surgery, so this new news is a tough blow for the Padres and the veteran backstop. Wil Nieves will function as the primary backup behind starting catcher Derek Norris.

Tim Federowicz is expected to undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right knee after an MRI revealed a lateral meniscus tear.

Tim Federowicz had an MRI on his right knee Monday.

Federowicz left Sunday's Cactus League game with discomfort in his right knee and showed up back at the Padres' spring training complex Monday on crutches. The MRI should provide a proper diagnosis. Federowicz was in line to open the 2015 regular season as San Diego's backup catcher.
