Orioles signed LHP Anthony Vasquez to a minor league contract; assigned him to Double-A Bowie.

Vasquez hasn't appeared in the majors since 2011, when he posted an ugly 8.90 ERA in 29 1/3 innings with the Mariners. The left-hander needed major surgery in November 2012 for a ruptured blood vessel in his brain.

Anthony Vasquez underwent successful emergency brain surgery on Friday in Phoenix, Arizona.

The 26-year-old left-hander began experiencing vision problems while working out at the Mariners' spring training complex in Peoria, Arizona and an examination by doctors showed a ruptured blood vessel in his brain. Vasquez is resting now and should be ready to resume baseball activities in a couple of months. He had a 6.53 ERA in 60 2/3 innings this summer at Triple-A Tacoma.

Mariners sent LHP Anthony Vasquez outright to Triple-A Tacoma.

The move clears him from the 40-man roster. Vasquez was terrible in seven starts down the stretch, posting an 8.90 ERA and 13/10 K/BB ratio over 29 1/3 innings.

Anthony Vasquez allowed five runs on seven hits and two walks in 3 1/3 innings Friday, falling to 1-5 in Seattle's loss to the Rangers.

Now the owner of a 8.89 ERA and 1.90 WHIP through his first 27 1/3 big-league innings, it's looking pretty safe to say Vasquez won't challenge for a spot in the Mariners' 2012 rotation.

Anthony Vasquez logged the first quality start of his career Sunday despite picking up a loss, holding the Royals to two runs on seven hits over six frames.

He struck out a pair and hit a batter. It was easily Vasquez's best start since being promoted, but unfortunately for him, he was outdone by Everett Teaford in the unlikely pitcher's duel. The owner of a 7.29 ERA and 1.67 WHIP, Vasquez will start next weekend against the Rangers in a matchup where he should certainly be avoided.

Anthony Vasquez allowed seven runs (six earned) on six hits and two walks in 5 2/3 innings on Monday, falling to 1-2 in Seattle's loss to the Angels.

Vasquez has now allowed six runs in each of his three starts since joining the Mariners rotation on August 23. It wouldn't be surprising if tonight finally forces Seattle to abandon its six-man rotation.

Anthony Vasquez will remain in the rotation for the time being, getting another start on September 5 against the Angels.

Vasquez has been horrendous in his two starts, posting a 11.57, but the M's will give him at least one more shot. The decision was made probably more so to get all the other starters extra rest as part of a six-man rotation rather than the M's believing Vasquez is deserving or will be successful.

Anthony Vasquez allowed eight runs (seven earned) in four innings on Tuesday evening against the Angels.

He gave up seven hits and three walks in the stinker, striking out one. He also gave up a pair of homers. The M's want to give 24-year-old righty Vasquez an extended look while simultaneously easing the workload on the rest of their young starters, which has led them to stick with a six-man rotation. But Vazquez's ERA is now up to 11.57 and he may have earned himself a ticket to Triple-A or the bullpen.

The Mariners have decided to stick with a six-man rotation for the time being.

The M's want to give 24-year-old righty Anthony Vasquez an extended look while simultaneously easing the workload on the rest of their young starters. Vasquez was hit hard by the Indians in his major-league debut on Tuesday, allowing six runs (five earned) in 5 1/3 innings.

Anthony Vasquez allowed six runs (five earned) in 5 1/3 innings on Tuesday evening, but still managed to win his first major league start as the Mariners took game two of a double-header 12-7 from the Indians.

He struck out two and walked two. The mostly dismal outing has likely earned Vasquez a ticket back to Triple-A until rosters are expanded in September.

Mariners purchased the contract of LHP Anthony Vasquez from Triple-A Tacoma.

Vasquez will make his major league debut in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Indians. The 24-year-old southpaw has a 3.57 ERA and 91/37 K/BB ratio over 24 starts this season between Double-A Jackson and Triple-A Tacoma. He is not regarded as a top prospect.
Tue, Aug 23, 2011 06:28:00 PM

The Mariners are expected to call up left-hander Anthony Vasquez to start the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Indians.

He will be added to the roster following the first game. Vasquez, 24, has a 3.57 ERA over 24 starts this season between Double-A Jackson and Triple-A Tacoma, averaging 5.3 K/9 and 2.2 BB/9. This will be his major league debut, so we would avoid him in fantasy leagues.

The Mariners could call up Anthony Vasquez to start Wednesday against the Athletics.

Vasquez was scratched from his start with Triple-A Tacoma on Monday night, so it appears he is at least under consideration. The 24-year-old left-hander has a 3.64 ERA over 21 starts between Double-A and Triple-A this season, averaging 5.8 K/9 and 2.1 BB/9. He would be replacing Erik Bedard in the rotation, at least for one start.
