Rule 5 pick Alfredo Silverio has been diagnosed with a sprained right elbow and has no return timetable.

Silverio is still recovering from Tommy John surgery, so this will be treated with much more caution than a typical elbow sprain. The 25-year-old outfielder will have to be returned to the Dodgers if he doesn't make the Marlins' big league roster. But the Marlins are allowed to keep him on the disabled list for as long as they want.

Rule 5 pick Alfredo Silverio homered as the Marlins' designated hitter Saturday against the Cardinals.

It came off lefty specialist Randy Choate, a guy the right-handed-hitting Silverio would never face in a close game during the regular season. The Marlins are expected to stash Silverio away on the disabled list to begin the year, as he's still recovering from injuries sustained in a car accident a year ago.

Alfredo Silverio (elbow) is likely to begin the season on the disabled list.

Silverio missed the entire 2012 season after injuring his neck and back in an auto accident and later requiring Tommy John surgery on his right elbow. The Marlins selected the 25-year-old from the Dodgers in December's Rule 5 Draft and figure to bring him along slowly.
