Brewers manager Craig Counsell confirmed that Stephen Vogt (shoulder) will open the year on the disabled list.
There had been talk that the Brewers could release Vogt and not pay him the $3.065 million owed, but he will in fact go to the disabled list. It's unknown at this time how long the former Oakland backstop will be out, but we do know that he'll miss at least the first week or so of the regular season while his shoulder strain heals. A second doctor confirmed Wednesday that Stephen Vogt has a right shoulder strain.

Vogt suffered the shoulder injury in late February and experienced lingering discomfort while trying to resume throwing on Monday. He can be ruled out for the beginning of the 2018 regular season. Manny Pina figures to open as the Brewers' starting catcher, with Jett Bandy backing him up.

Stephen Vogt experienced a setback with his shoulder while trying to throw on the field Monday.

Vogt was diagnosed with a right shoulder strain toward the end of February and appeared to be trending in the right direction, so it's a worrisome development. He'll visit with a doctor before the next step is decided, but it's now unlikely he'll be ready for Opening Day.
Mar 12 - 12:58 PM

Stephen Vogt said his shoulder was "pain-free" during Thursday's throwing session.

"Yesterday, we started doing a little bit and it was still very sore," said Vogt. "Then today, no pain. So, it was a step in the right direction." Vogt served as the DH in Thursday's Cactus League game against the Diamondbacks but is still about a week away from catching. Manager Craig Counsell is confident Vogt will be ready for Opening Day, as are we.

Stephen Vogt (shoulder) did plyometric throwing drills Thursday morning in Brewers camp.

"Today was a huge, huge step in the right direction," Vogt said after the workout. He was diagnosed with a strained right shoulder in late February, but the Brewers seem to think the veteran catcher will be ready for the start of the regular season.
Mar 8 - 10:56 AM

The Brewers hope to get Stephen Vogt (shoulder) some at-bats as a designated hitter this week.

Vogt was diagnosed with a strained right shoulder last week and is still another week or two away from catching in games again. However, he's slated to begin light throwing Tuesday and get some plate appearances this week. The Brewers think he has enough time to get ready for Opening Day.
Mar 4 - 1:06 PM

Stephen Vogt will be out for the next 2-3 weeks due to a strained right (throwing) shoulder.

This could obviously affect his availability for the start of the regular season and possibly open the door for Jett Bandy to make the Brewers' Opening Day roster. Manny Pina is already locked in for semi-regular starts behind the plate in Milwaukee. Vogt worked all winter on his throwing, which might have resulted in the strain.
Feb 28 - 12:04 PM

Brewers manager Craig Counsell indicated Thursday that Stephen Vogt isn't necessarily assured a place on the team.

The Brewers considered non-tendering Vogt before signing him to a non-guaranteed $3.065 million pact on Dec. 1. "Stephen, we brought him back, signed him to a contract, but I think he's got something prove and that will be part of his camp," Counsell said. Manny Pina and Jett Bandy are out of options, and the Brewers could keep both if Vogt's defense isn't up to snuff. Pina is already assured a spot on the team.

Brewers and C Stephen Vogt avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $3.065 million contract.

There had been some speculation that the team could non-tender Vogt, but the catcher decided to accept less than his arbitration projection in order to stick around. He batted .233/.285/.423 with 12 homers for the A's and Brewers in 2017 and will enter 2018 as their No. 1 catcher.

Stephen Vogt went 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBI versus the Cardinals on Friday.

Vogt has eight homers in just 117 at-bats for the Brewers after hitting four in 157 at-bats with the A's this season. The Brewers seem likely to keep him around for 2018, though it would mean paying him $3.5 million-$4 million.

Stephen Vogt slugged a solo homer in Friday’s loss to the Cubs.

Vogt and Brett Phillips went back-to-back off John Lackey in the second inning. Claimed off waivers from the Athletics back in June, Vogt came into Friday’s action mired in a 3-for-27 (.111) funk. He’s now up to 11 homers on the year, with seven of them in just 38 games with the Brewers.

Stephen Vogt whacked a pinch-hit solo home run in the ninth inning of Wednesday's loss to the Giants.

Vogt popped a solo homer off Sam Dyson with two outs in the ninth inning to draw the Brewers to within 4-2, but they were unable to put together a further rally to make matters interesting. The veteran backstop has played well in a small sample size since joining the Brewers on a waiver claim at the end of June. He is slashing .297/.341/.757 with five homers and 10 RBI in 16 games played. A sprained MCL cost him about a month of action before he was activated from the disabled list on August 18.

Brewers activated C Stephen Vogt from the 10-day disabled list.

Vogt missed a month of action with a sprained MCL. He'll go back to sharing time at catcher with Manny Pina.

Stephen Vogt (knee) went 2-for-3 in a rehab game Wednesday with Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Vogt will play in one more rehab game on Thursday before likely returning to the Brewers' active roster ahead of Friday night's series opener at Coors Field. The veteran catcher has been on the disabled list for the last month with an MCL sprain in his left knee.

Stephen Vogt (knee) will continue his rehab assignment with Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Vogt went 2-for-11 (.182) with a pair of doubles through three rehab games with Class A Wisconsin. The veteran backstop went down about a month after with an MCL sprain in his left knee, but he should rejoin the Brewers within the next few days.
