Pirates and RHP Jared Hughes avoided arbitration by agreeing on a one-year, $2.825 million contract.
He made $2.175 million in 2016. Hughes has been one of the best middle relievers in baseball the last few years. He posted a 3.03 ERA in 59 1/3 innings last year and has a nifty 2.82 career ERA in 313 games. Despite his run-prevention skills the ground-ball specialist is not the sort of high-strikeout relief ace that generates a lot of holds or saves. He will continue to be a key part of the Pirates' bullpen nonetheless. Jan 12 - 10:19 PM

Pirates activated RHP Jared Hughes from the 15-day disabled list.

The right-hander has been sidelined since the spring with a strained lat, but is now fully recovered and ready to go. He'll work in his traditional middle relief role for the Pirates.

Jared Hughes (lat) is on track to be activated from the disabled list on Saturday.

Hughes is with the club in Pittsburgh now, but they evidently want to give him at least a couple days of rest after he went two innings in his final rehab appearance Wednesday. He got a late start to the season due to a strained lat.

Jared Hughes (lat) allowed three runs on five hits over two innings Wednesday in a rough minor league rehab appearance with Triple-A Indianapolis.

Hughes also got hammered on Sunday with Triple-A Indy and will probably be asked to make at least one more appearance on the farm before activation. The right-hander has been out since the end of spring training because of a left lat strain. He owns a sharp 2.12 ERA in 131 1/3 innings since the beginning of the 2014 campaign.

Jared Hughes (lat) is scheduled to pitch two innings Monday for Triple-A Indianapolis.

Hughes had to be scratched from a scheduled rehab outing last week due to flu-like symptoms, but he's feeling better now. If all goes smoothly from here, the right-hander could be cleared to join the Pirates' bullpen early next week. He has been out since the end of spring training because of a left lat strain.

Jared Hughes (lat) won't begin a rehab assignment on Wednesday due to illness.

He should be recovered from the bug by the end of the week. Hughes landed on the 15-day disabled list just before Opening Day with a left lat strain. He's likely to be ready for activation late next week.

Jared Hughes (lat) will begin his minor league rehab assignment on Wednesday.

Hughes was originally expected to make his first appearance on Tuesday, but it was pushed back a day due to a bout with the flu. The plan calls for him to pitch on back-to-back days, so he's not far off from joining the Pirates. The 30-year-old was forced to begin the season on the disabled list due to a left (non-throwing) lat strain.

Jared Hughes (lat) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday.

Hughes is making his way back from a strain to his left (non-throwing) lat. He shouldn't need more than a couple rehab appearances before being activated.

Jared Hughes (lat) threw a live batting practice simulated game at Advanced-A Bradenton on Wednesday.

Hughes continues to slowly work his way back from a left lat straight suffered near the end of spring training. Last week, he threw off the slope of the mound. The 30-year-old took a step forward on Wednesday with his live BP work. The trainer on hand indicated that "initial reports are positive." Hughes could return to action by the end of the month.

Jared Hughes (lat) threw off the slope of the mound on Wednesday.

Of note, Hughes threw off the slope of the mound rather than the rubber. The 30-year-old right-hander was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a left lat strain retroactive to March 25 after being waylaid by the injury near the tail-end of spring training. Head athletic trainer Todd Tomczyk addressed his recovery, noting, "Early indication is that is body is responding well. The next step is to get him [pitching] off the mound in the near future."

Pirates placed RHP Jared Hughes on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 25, with a left lat strain.

The good news is the strain is on his non-throwing side. Hughes isn't expected to be out long.

Jared Hughes (lat) is expected to begin the season on the disabled list.

Hughes recently suffered a left (non-throwing side) lat strain and there's just not enough time for him to get ready for the start of the season. If all goes well, he shouldn't have to miss much time.

Jared Hughes is considered day-to-day with a left latissimus muscle strain.

The issue is worth watching, especially given how he has struggled this spring, but it doesn't sound like a major concern for now. Hughes is coming off an excellent season where he posted a 2.28 ERA over 76 relief appearances while posting a ground ball rate of 63.7 percent.

Pirates and RHP Jared Hughes avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $2.175 million contract.

It's a shade under the $2.2 million he was projected by MLBTradeRumors.com to earn in his second year of arbitration eligibility. Hughes held a 2.28 ERA in 2015, and while he doesn't miss many bats he's been a reliable setup man.

Jared Hughes gave up five runs and six hits in one-third of an inning Tuesday versus the Orioles.

Hughes saw his spring ERA balloon to 11.37 with the ugly outing. He had a 1.96 ERA last season, seemingly making him an integral part of the Pittsburgh bullpen. However, since he has an option remaining and some other Pirates relievers don't, he can't take that roster spot for granted.
