Reds signed RHP Jared Hughes to a two-year, $4.5 million contract with a $3 million club option for 2020.
Hughes will earn $2.125 million in both 2018 and 2019, and the club option comes with a $250,000 buyout. The 32-year-old ground-balling right-hander was non-tendered by the Brewers on December 1 in a fairly surprising move. He owns a 2.55 ERA over his last 250 1/3 innings of relief dating back to the beginning of the 2014 season and the Reds seem likely to utilize him in a high-leverage setup role. Brewers non-tendered RHP Jared Hughes.

This one is a bit of a surprise considering Hughes turned in a 3.02 ERA over 67 appearances in his first season with the Brewers. He has a career 2.85 ERA in 380 games, mostly with the Pirates. He was projected to make $2.2 million in salary arbitration. Perhaps there is an undisclosed injury.

Jared Hughes notched a two-out save Friday against the Mets.

It wasn’t your normal save chance. Jacob Barnes began the ninth inning with a five-run lead, but he allowed two runs on three hits before being pulled in favor of Hughes, who retired both of the batters he faced to finish off the victory. The Brewers are moving away from Neftali Feliz in the closer role, so look for Corey Knebel to see the next save chance.

Tom Haudricourt reports that the Jared Hughes will earn $950,000 in his one-year contract with the Brewers.

He also has the potential to earn an additional $250,000 based on incentives for games pitched. He's expected to function in a middle relief role for the Brewers.

Brewers signed RHP Jared Hughes to a one-year contract.

Hughes was cut loose by the Pirates last week but quickly landed on his feet. He'll work in middle relief for the Brew Crew.
Sun, Apr 2, 2017 12:47:00 PM's Mark Feinsand reports the Brewers are "closing in" on a deal with Jared Hughes.

The deal will be complete after Hughes passes a physical. Hughes was released by Pittsburgh on Friday following a dismal spring training. Despite his recent struggles, the ground-ball specialists holds an impressive 2.41 ERA over his last three seasons. He'll occupy a middle relief role in Milwaukee.

Pirates released RHP Jared Hughes.

Hughes doesn't miss bats (career 5.5 K/9 rate), but he boasts a career 2.82 ERA over six seasons out of the Pirates' bullpen and induces lots of grounders. He won't be out of a job long, especially now that he can be had at the veteran minimum.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Pirates have placed Jared Hughes on release waivers.

Hughes has really struggled this spring, allowing 15 runs (12 earned) on 16 hits and four walks over 9 1/3 innings. The 31-year-old has compiled a 2.41 ERA over the past three seasons and induces plenty of ground balls, but he has averaged just 5.0 K/9 in that time. He's under contract for $2.825 million this season.

Pirates and RHP Jared Hughes avoided arbitration by agreeing on a one-year, $2.825 million contract.

He made $2.175 million in 2016. Hughes has been one of the best middle relievers in baseball the last few years. He posted a 3.03 ERA in 59 1/3 innings last year and has a nifty 2.82 career ERA in 313 games. Despite his run-prevention skills the ground-ball specialist is not the sort of high-strikeout relief ace that generates a lot of holds or saves. He will continue to be a key part of the Pirates' bullpen nonetheless.

Pirates activated RHP Jared Hughes from the 15-day disabled list.

The right-hander has been sidelined since the spring with a strained lat, but is now fully recovered and ready to go. He'll work in his traditional middle relief role for the Pirates.

Jared Hughes (lat) is on track to be activated from the disabled list on Saturday.

Hughes is with the club in Pittsburgh now, but they evidently want to give him at least a couple days of rest after he went two innings in his final rehab appearance Wednesday. He got a late start to the season due to a strained lat.

Jared Hughes (lat) allowed three runs on five hits over two innings Wednesday in a rough minor league rehab appearance with Triple-A Indianapolis.

Hughes also got hammered on Sunday with Triple-A Indy and will probably be asked to make at least one more appearance on the farm before activation. The right-hander has been out since the end of spring training because of a left lat strain. He owns a sharp 2.12 ERA in 131 1/3 innings since the beginning of the 2014 campaign.

Jared Hughes (lat) is scheduled to pitch two innings Monday for Triple-A Indianapolis.

Hughes had to be scratched from a scheduled rehab outing last week due to flu-like symptoms, but he's feeling better now. If all goes smoothly from here, the right-hander could be cleared to join the Pirates' bullpen early next week. He has been out since the end of spring training because of a left lat strain.

Jared Hughes (lat) won't begin a rehab assignment on Wednesday due to illness.

He should be recovered from the bug by the end of the week. Hughes landed on the 15-day disabled list just before Opening Day with a left lat strain. He's likely to be ready for activation late next week.

Jared Hughes (lat) will begin his minor league rehab assignment on Wednesday.

Hughes was originally expected to make his first appearance on Tuesday, but it was pushed back a day due to a bout with the flu. The plan calls for him to pitch on back-to-back days, so he's not far off from joining the Pirates. The 30-year-old was forced to begin the season on the disabled list due to a left (non-throwing) lat strain.
