Jake Diekman (colon) will make a rehab appearance for Triple-A Round Rock on Thursday.

Jake Diekman (colon) will throw another live batting practice session before beginning a rehab assignment.

The feeling had been that Diekman would start a rehab assignment early this week, but he'll face hitters in a controlled setting once more. The lefty reliever has been out all season following three different surgeries to rebuild his colon but is poised to return within the next few weeks.

Jake Diekman (colon) threw live BP and took pitchers fielding practice on Saturday.

Diekman should now be cleared to head out on a minor league rehab assignment, though Rangers pitching coach Doug Brocail cautioned that it might be a while before we see the left-hander on a major league mound. "I’m not going to put a timeline on it," said Brocail. "This is his spring training. At some point I need that arm to get tired. I think he’s starting to have that tired phase." Diekman has been out all season following three different surgeries to rebuild his colon.

Jake Diekman (colon) will throw a bullpen session Thursday.

Jake Diekman (colon) threw from 110 feet out on Wednesday.

" I can't really torque my torso that much, but it is fun to actually be around and throw a baseball again," Diekman said. "I feel like when I start throwing off a mound, then I'll be good." He has undergone three surgeries to remove and rebuild his colon, the most recent of which came on June 9. While he is making progress and could potentially rejoin the Rangers at some point in the second half, Diekman remains a ways off from returning.

Jake Diekman recently underwent the second of three ulcerative colitis surgeries to remove and rebuild his colon.

Diekman lost about 10 pounds as a result of the procedure. He'll have the third and final surgery on June 9 at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. The hope is that Diekman will resume a throwing program in late June and rejoin the Rangers' bullpen sometime in the second half.

Jake Diekman (colon surgery) said Tuesday that he expects to be pitching by the All-Star break.

Diekman underwent surgery in January to remove his colon, but he's present for the start of Rangers' camp this week. He still has two more surgeries ahead of him in April and June, but he's still planning to contribute out of the Rangers' bullpen this season. It would be quite the comeback.

Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said that Jake Diekman (abdomen) plans to be present for the start of spring training.

Diekman continues to recover after undergoing surgery to remove his colon near the end of January. He is not expected to be healthy enough to contribute to the Rangers until later this summer, but will at least attend spring training as he continues to work his way back from the major surgical procedure.

Jake Diekman underwent successful surgery to help alleviate ulcerative colitis on Wednesday.

Diekman was under the knife for four hours as doctors removed a colon damaged by ulcerative colitis. This is a disease which has affected him since the age of 11. The 30-year-old is expected to miss a healthy chunk of the 2017 campaign as he recovers from the procedure. This past season, Diekman pitched to a 3.40 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 59/26 K/BB ratio across 53 frames.

Jake Diekman will have surgery on January 25 to help alleviate ulcerative colitis and is expected to miss at least half of the season.

That's too bad. Diekman has been open about his fight with the illness and will hopefully get some relief from the procedure. He turns 30 next week and posted a 3.40 ERA and 59/26 K/BB ratio over 53 innings last season. He'll be a nice weapon for the Rangers' bullpen once he's back to full health. The Rangers and Diekman agreed to a one-year, $2.55 million deal last week to avoid arbitration.
