Hoffman was sporting a nasty bruise on Monday morning but shouldn't be sidetracked whatsoever by the minor incident. The 23-year-old left-hander is trying to win a spot in the Tigers' Opening Day bullpen this spring.

Tigers purchased the contract of LHP Matt Hoffman from Triple-A Toledo.

He's now protected from the Rule 5 draft. Hoffman held a 3.45 ERA and 46/25 K/BB ratio over 62 2/3 innings between Double- and Triple-A this season. He has a shot to be a LOOGY at some point.
