Perez provides infield depth with Johnny Peralta on the paternity leave list. The Tigers have yet to announce a corresponding roster move, though that could depend on how close Octavio Dotel (elbow) is to a return.

Perez was added to the 40-man roster this offseason in order to avoid the Rule 5 draft, but he's nowhere near major league-ready. He batted .258/.314/.364 batting line with eight homers and 23 steals for Low-A West Michigan last season.

Perez, 20, put up a .258/.314/.364 batting line with eight homers and 23 steals for West Michigan this season. He's a long ways off from competing for a big league roster spot, but the Tigers wanted to keep him away from the Rule 5 draft.
