Pedro Villarreal (forearm) returned to action on Friday, hurling a perfect inning of relief in a loss to the Brewers.
Villarreal suffered a bruise on his right forearm during Monday's game when he was struck by a Matt Holliday comebacker. The 26-year-old right-hander has allowed four runs in his 10 innings of work with the Reds (3.60 ERA) to compliment a 1.00 WHIP and 8/4 K/BB ratio. Sep 13 - 5:00 AM

Pedro Villarreal left Monday's game against the Cardinals after being hit on the right hand by a comebacker.

Matt Holliday's smash back up the middle in the ninth inning struck Villarreal and went for an infield single. Villarreal threw a warm-up pitch but was then pulled. The Reds should have more on the reliever's status later.

Reds purchased the contract of RHP Pedro Villarreal from Triple-A Louisville.

The Reds desperately needed to get JJ Hoover and Carlos Contreras out of the bullpen. To do so, they've elected to give Villarreal another chance. Cincinnati exposed Villarreal to waivers last September, and the right-hander received nary a sniff. He's back in the bigs because he went 6-2 with a 3.20 ERA across 56-plus innings on the farm. Villarreal will show what he can do out of a low-leverage middle relief role.

Reds sent RHP Pedro Villarreal outright to Triple-A Louisville.

Villarreal was first designated for assignment and then outrighted to the minors after clearing waivers. The 25-year-old right-hander registered a 4.43 ERA and 1.30 WHIP in 109 2/3 innings this summer in the minors.

Reds recalled RHP Pedro Villarreal from Double-A Pensacola.

Villarreal was added to the 40-man roster last November and posted a 4.36 ERA and 107/38 K/BB ratio in 148 2/3 innings over 26 starts this year between Double- and Triple-A. He'll likely be used as a long man or middle reliever during his first stint in the big leagues.

Reds purchased the contract of RHP Pedro Villarreal from Double-A Carolina.

Villarreal has posted a thoroughly unexciting 4.34 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 6.4 K/9 rate over his 317 1/3 career minor league innings, but the Reds evidently like him enough to keep him away from the Rule 5 draft. The 23-year-old could open 2012 at Triple-A.
