The move was done to free up a spot on the 40-man roster for Kyle Ryan who will start the nightcap of Saturday's doubleheader against the White Sox. Miller, provided he passes through waivers unclaimed, will continue to serve as additional bullpen depth in the minor leagues.

Someone had to get the ax with Anibal Sanchez returning from the disabled list on Sunday, and Miller happened to be the casualty. The 26-year-old posted a 3.48 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 5/1 K/BB ratio in 10 1/3 innings with the Tigers this season. He'll be back the next time that they need a bullpen arm.

Miller is the only one of the group that might have entered camp with an outside shot of landing an Opening Day roster spot. He allowed five runs -- three earned -- over his five spring innings and will now provide depth at Triple-A.

Miller is now on the 40-man roster. The 26-year-old posted an ugly 7.67 ERA and 33/16 K/BB ratio 27 innings with the Rangers' Double-A and Triple-A affiliates this past season before being given his release in September, but he latched on with the Tigers a couple of weeks later.

Miller, who is coming back from Tommy John surgery, was recalled and then placed on the 60-day disabled list on Thursday. He'll be optioned to Triple-A Round Rock once he's healthy.
