Marwin Gonzalez hit a two-run home run, his 11th of the season, in Thursday's win over the Tigers.
We keep waiting for Gonzalez to fall off, and he keeps defying everyone. On Thursday, he teed off against Tigers ace Justin Verlander, lifting a two-run shot over the right field wall for his only hit in three at-bats. To illustrate how out-of-character this is, Gonzalez's career high for homers is 13, set in 141 games last year. He's now at 11 dingers through 40 games this season. His durability will keep him on the field most days, and if he keeps hitting .282/.380/.627 he'll be in the lineup for a long, long time. Until he stops hitting, he's a fantasy asset for his position eligibility as much as his bat. May 26 - 12:49 AM

Marwin Gonzalez went 1-for-3 with an RBI single in Sunday's loss to the Yankees.

Gonzalez's RBI single with one out in the third inning drove Luis Severino from the game. A run also scored when he reached base on an error by Starlin Castro in the seventh inning. That boosted the Astros to a 5-4 lead, but the Yankees would come back with six runs in the bottom of the frame to pull away. While he owns just a .258/.301/.401 triple-slash for his career, Gonzalez is off to a blazing .272/.375/.630 batting line with nine home runs and 23 RBI in 29 games played this season.

Marwin Gonzalez (foot) went 1-for-4 in his return to the Astros' starting lineup on Wednesday against the Braves.

Gonzalez had missed a handful of games with a sore left foot. The utilityman is off to a terrific start offensively in 2017, with a .270/.375/.662 batting line, nine home runs, and 21 RBI in 26 games.
May 11 - 8:53 AM

Marwin Gonzalez (foot) said he should be available to pinch-hit on Tuesday night.

But he is being held out of the Astros' starting lineup again as he works through a sore left foot. Gonzalez has batted .271/.381/.686 with nine home runs and 21 RBI in 26 games this year for Houston.

Marwin Gonzalez is dealing with a sore left foot.

Gonzalez was hit by a pitch on the foot Saturday. He could be available off the bench.
May 7 - 2:36 PM

Marwin Gonzalez homered again Thursday, giving him six in six games and nine this season.

He also had a single, a walk and a sac fly. The bizarre thing about Gonzalez's power spree is that he actually has a pretty extreme groundball rate, more so than usual. However, every other flyball he hits is leaving the yard. It can't last, but he has to stay in the lineup until it stops.
May 4 - 6:10 PM

Marwin Gonzalez collected his eighth homer and his second double Wednesday against the Rangers.

Gonzalez entered this season averaging one homer every 41 at-bats throughout his career. Right now, he has eight homers in 61 at-bats. He shouldn't have any lasting value in mixed leagues, but the Astros will certainly keep running him out there until he cools off.
May 4 - 12:13 AM

Marwin Gonzalez smashed a pair of home runs -- including a go-ahead grand slam in the eighth inning -- in Tuesday's comeback win over the Rangers.

Gonzalez took Alex Claudio deep with a solo shot in the fifth inning, and he capped off his night by clubbing a moonshot off of Keone Kela that just stayed fair down the right field line. The 28-year-old is sporting just a .228 average so far this season, but he's tied for the team lead with seven homers and lead the Astros in RBI with 17 despite receiving just 57 at-bats.
May 3 - 12:14 AM

Marwin Gonzalez slugged his fifth home run of the season Sunday versus the Athletics.

It was a three-run shot in the bottom of the eighth that put the game out of reach for Oakland. Gonzalez has hit well over the last week, but the 28-year-old does not currently have an everyday role and can go on being ignored in standard fantasy leagues.
Apr 30 - 5:40 PM

Marwin Gonzalez went 2-for-3 with a home run in Thursday's loss to the Indians.

Gonzalez went through an 0-for-16 stretch before snapping out of it with a 2-for-4 game Wednesday, and he followed it up with his fourth homer of the year and his first since April 9. After that strong first week-plus he appeared to be in line for more playing time, but the emergence of Yuli Gurriel has relegated Gonzalez to a part-time player. He can be left alone in fantasy leagues if he's not getting everyday at-bats, and even then he's best left for AL-only leagues.
Apr 27 - 10:11 PM

Marwin Gonzalez went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Sunday's 12-inning win over the Royals.

Gonzalez whacked a game-tying two-run home run to the short porch in left off Travis Wood with one out in the seventh inning. That shot evened the score at 3-3. The Astros would have to play the comeback game once more in the ninth before they eventually pulled through for the win via a walk-off walk by Evan Gattis in the 12th inning. The early power is nice, but cannot truly be counted on to last as the season progresses. While Gonzalez has hit double-digit home runs in each of the past two campaigns, he has never hit more than the career-best 13 that he swatted a year ago.
Apr 9 - 6:20 PM

Marwin Gonzalez hit his second home run in three games in Thursday's loss to the Mariners.

Gonzalez hit a solo dong in the third inning against Mariners starter Ariel Miranda. He also homered Tuesday in his first action of 2017. Also notable is the fact that Gonzalez batted second in Thursday's contest, after George Springer and ahead of Jose Altuve. Third base and the second spot in the lineup belong to Alex Bregman, but it's interesting to note that Astros manager A.J. Hinch has faith in the 28-year-old Gonzalez to fill both voids should Bregman be unavailable.
Apr 7 - 12:53 AM

Marwin Gonzalez had a solo homer Tuesday after getting the not over Yuli Gurriel at first base.

He committed an error in the fourth, but Lance McCullers was able to pitch around it. The Astros remain awfully fond of Gonzalez, so while he shouldn't come close to approaching last year's total of 484 at-bats, A.J. Hinch will find him a lineup spot at least a couple of times per week.
Apr 4 - 11:49 PM

Marwin Gonzalez is starting at first base for the Astros on Tuesday versus the Mariners.

Gonzalez has good numbers against Mariners starter Hisashi Iwakuma, so he gets the nod over Yulieski Gurriel. Evan Gattis is at DH and batting seventh.
Apr 4 - 4:14 PM

Astros and 1B Marwin Gonzalez avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $3.725 million contract with a $5.125 million team option for 2018.

Gonzalez served as a versatile piece for the Astros last season. The 27-year-old first baseman worked to a .254/.293/.401 triple-slash with 13 homers, 51 RBI and 12 stolen bases across 141 games played. As far as utility players go, he is as usable as they come.
