According to CBS Sports' Danny Knobler, scouts who have seen Cubs prospect Gerardo Concepcion pitch have come away "totally unimpressed."

"They're trying to tell people it's just mechanics -- that he needs to get straightened out," one scout said. "But if he was in a junior college game you were at, you'd leave." Concepcion, who signed a five-year, $6 million contract in March, is 2-6 with a 7.39 ERA in 12 starts this season.

Cubs prospect Gerardo Concepcion allowed seven runs in less than an inning Monday at Low-A Peoria.

That marks back-to-back rough outings for Concepcion, who surrendered five runs in his first professional start last week. The 20-year-old Cuban left-hander was signed to a five-year, $6 million contract in mid-March. He will have to begin making some adjustments.

Cubs prospect Gerardo Concepcion allowed five runs in five innings Wednesday at Single-A Peoria.

It was the Cuban defector's professional debut. Fighting jitters, he allowed five runs in a rocky first inning but settled in with four scoreless after that. The 20-year-old left-hander is likely to make a slow but steady climb through the Cubs' farm system.

Cubs signed LHP Gerardo Concepcion to a five-year, $6 million contract.

The deal was reported over a month ago and has now become official. Concepcion, who the Cubs have listed as 20 years old and not 18 as he had been previously, gets a major league deal and has been added to the 40-man roster, but he'll be assigned to minor league camp in spring training. The lefty was named the Rookie of the Year in Cuba's Serie Nacional last season after posting a 3.36 ERA and 53/43 K/BB ratio across 101 2/3 innings.

Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com confirms that Cuban left-hander Gerardo Concepcion was declared a free agent by MLB last week.

Concepcion, who defected from Cuba last June, recently established residency in Mexico and Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes reported last week that he was close to being granted free agency. Concepcion's agent, Jaime Torres, told Sanchez that the Rangers, Yankees, Cubs and White Sox have expressed the most interest thus far. In fact, the 18-year-old southpaw already has one offer on the table and Torres expects his client will sign a contract with the next two weeks.
