Kole Calhoun is expected to miss the next 4-6 weeks after fracturing the hamate bone in his right hand.

Calhoun nearly cracked the Angels' Opening Day roster as a reserve outfielder, but now it will be much longer before he makes his way to Anaheim. The injury occurred Thursday night, while swinging in a game at Triple-A Salt Lake.

Kole Calhoun - OF - Angels

Angels optioned OF Kole Calhoun, INF Luis Jimenez, RHP David Carpenter and C John Hester to Triple-A Salt Lake; reassigned C Chris Snyder and LHP Mitch Stetter to minor league camp.

There are a couple surprises here, as Calhoun was expected to be carried over J.B. Shuck, and Snyder was expected to be the backup catcher over Hank Conger. Mark Lowe and Garrett Richards made the Angels' Opening Day bullpen, while Conger, Shuck, Brendan Harris and Andrew Romine will be on the bench.

The Angels are expected to call up outfield prospect Kole Calhoun before Monday's game against the A's.

Calhoun is batting .296/.365/.491 with five homers and 31 RBI in 43 games this year at Triple-A. He slugged 22 home runs and stole 20 bases last year in Single-A. The 24-year-old will function as outfield depth while Vernon Wells and Ryan Langerhans recover from injuries.
