Rutledge landed on the disabled list in mid-June with patellar tendinitis in his left knee and eventually required surgery. He is now off Boston's 40-man roster and it's unclear what his future might hold.

Rutledge has been bothered by the knee issue for nearly two months and rest and rehab wasn't working. His rehab is expected to last 3-4 months, so he should be ready for spring training, barring any complications.

The move was needed to clear a roster spot for Drew Pomeranz. Rutledge has been out a month with patellar tendinitis in his left knee. He was made expendable when the team acquired Aaron Hill earlier this month.
