Josh Rutledge underwent surgery on his left hip and will miss the remainder of the season.
Rutledge played in just 37 games for the Red Sox this year. He has been dealing with persistent soreness in the hip. Red Sox transferred INF Josh Rutledge from the 10-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

The move clears a spot for Addison Reed on the 40-man roster. Rutledge has been out for over a month with concussion symptoms.
Jul 31 - 3:17 PM

The Red Sox are expected to activate Josh Rutledge (concussion) from the disabled list on Monday.

Manager John Farrell insinuated that the Red Sox would likely send down a reliever to make room for him. Rutledge seems to be over his concussion and began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Pawtucket on Thursday. He'll split time at third base with Brock Holt and Deven Marrero, though the Red Sox are likely to upgrade that position at the trade deadline. A .258 career hitter with very little power, Rutledge carries no fantasy relevance.
Jul 22 - 8:59 PM

Josh Rutledge (concussion) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Pawtucket on Thursday.

He's batting fifth and DHing at home against Norfolk. Rutledge has been out a month with a concussion but appears to be on the mend. When healthy, he'll occupy a third base platoon with Brock Holt. Of course, that's assuming Boston doesn't add a third baseman at the trade deadline.
Jul 20 - 4:33 PM

In addition to his concussion, Josh Rutledge has also been dealing with "persistent soreness" in his left hip.

Rutledge reportedly suffered his concussion on Memorial Day but didn't alert the Red Sox of his symptoms until recently. He was finally diagnosed with a concussion on Friday and was placed on the DL a day later. Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal listed a few of his symptoms including "a lack of focus, an inability to pick up spin on pitches" and "a bit of disorientation." With Rutledge, Pablo Sandoval and Brock Holt all on the shelf, the Red Sox have resorted to starting Deven Marrero at third base, though ex-Cardinal Jhonny Peralta could be an option soon.
Jun 24 - 8:29 PM

Red Sox placed INF Josh Rutledge on the 7-day concussion disabled list.

In a corresponding move, the Red Sox recalled Tzu-Wei Lin from Double-A Portland. Concussions can be tricky, but barring any setbacks Rutledge should be ready to return in early July.
Jun 24 - 3:55 PM

Josh Rutledge went 2-for-2 with a run scored, three walks, two RBI and a stolen base in Saturday's game against the Tigers.

Rutledge filled in admirably when Dustin Pedroia was injured. The second baseman is back from the 10-day disabled list, but manager John Farrell used the infielder at third base on Saturday. Rutledge will see his playing time curtailed now that Petey is back, returning to a utility infielder role.
Jun 11 - 1:35 AM

Josh Rutledge (dehydration) was able to enter Sunday's game as a defensive sub.

Rutledge was a late scratch from the Red Sox starting lineup on Saturday due to dehydration, but he's all good now. The 28-year-old will continue to function as a utility infielder for Boston. He's been seeing some starts at second base with Dustin Pedroia (wrist) sidelined.
Jun 5 - 8:38 AM

Josh Rutledge was scratched from the Red Sox starting lineup Saturday due to dehydration.

Deven Marrero will start at second base and bat ninth versus Orioles right-hander Dylan Bundy. Rutledge should be fine in a day or two.
Jun 3 - 6:41 PM

Red Sox activated INF Josh Rutledge from the 10-day disabled list.

Rutledge will replace the injured Pablo Sandoval (knee) on the active roster and figures to share playing time at third base in the coming days. The 28-year-old went 1-for-12 with a homer over five rehab games while working his way back from a left hamstring strain.
Apr 25 - 12:15 PM

Josh Rutledge (hamstring) has shifted his minor league rehab assignment to Double-A Portland.

Rutledge was with Triple-A Pawtucket, but they are off on Monday. Assuming all goes well, he could be ready to join the Red Sox in the next day or two. The 28-year-old began the year on the disabled list with a left hamstring strain.
Apr 24 - 12:34 PM

Josh Rutledge (hamstring) is expected to begin the season on the disabled list.

Mar 29 - 9:58 AM

Josh Rutledge has been diagnosed with a left hamstring strain.

Rutledge tweaked the hammy while going first to third on the bases Tuesday. He had been slated to make the Opening Day roster and likely see some starts against lefties, but a disabled list stint is probably now in order. It could open up a roster spot for Marco Hernandez.
