Marlins prospect C J.T. Realmuto was 3-for-5 on Sunday with three stolen bases and two RBI for Double-A Jacksonville.
Realmuto, 23, has been swinging a hot bat as of late, as he's batting .600 (12-for-20) with three extra-base hits, 10 runs, and seven RBI during his current five-game hitting streak. Overall, the athletic backstop is batting .333/.381/.509 with six extra-base hits, 12 RBI, four steals and a 8/5 strikeout-to-walk ratio through 15 games. His strong defense should help Realmuto emerge as a backup catcher for the Marlins at some point this season, though the development of his bat could push him into a more regular role. Marlins optioned C J.T. Realmuto, OF Brent Keys, LHP Grant Dayton, RHPs Angel Sanchez and Jose Urena to Double-A Jacksonville; optioned OF Kyle Jensen and RHP Michael Brady to Triple-A New Orleans.

Realmuto is coming off a disappointing year on the farm but could be the catcher of the future. Keys, on the other hand, had a dream season in 2013, slashing .341/.415/.390 between two levels. He doesn't have any power, but could someday earn a big league gig. Brady had a 1.53 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and a 55/9 K/BB ratio over 53 innings at Double-A last season. Dayton boasts a 2.42 ERA with 269 strikeouts across 212 1/3 career minor league innings. Sanchez made 25 starts over three levels last year, collecting a 4.11 ERA over 131 1/3 innings. Urena has some of the best upside in the system and held a 3.73 ERA with 107 strikeouts over 149 2/3 frames at Jupiter last year.

Marlins purchased the contract of C Jacob Realmuto from Double-A Jacksonville.

It was a down year for the 22-year-old, as he hit .239/.310/.353 at Double-A. By purchasing his contract, the Marlins have ensured they won't lose him in December's Rule 5 Draft. He's now on the team's 40-man roster.
