Tyler Collins was the Tigers' offense on Thursday, going 3-for-3 with two doubles and a walk against the Mariners.
Unfortunately, he was also called on to play defense, which didn't go so well. He botched what should have been a routine catch for the right fielder in the sixth inning, leading to the Mariners' first run. He also made an ill-advised throw in the ninth that allowed a potential insurance run to get to second base. Collins has been on a nice roll with the bat lately, and to be fair, he belongs in an outfield corner, not in center. Apart from Collins, the Tigers mustered just one hit and one walk today. Tyler Collins finished 3-for-5 with three RBI and a walk in Tuesday's rout.

Collins had just two RBI in 48 at-bats coming into this one, and he's still sporting just a .631 OPS at the moment. He has some AL-only value while starting against right-handers, but the sooner the Tigers can supplant him, the better.
Apr 26 - 12:38 AM

Tyler Collins went 1-for-4 and scored a run as the Tigers topped the Indians in Sunday's series finale in Cleveland.

Collins, who is seeing the strong side of the platoon in right field while J.D. Martinez is sidelined, singled in the second inning and rode home on Alex Avila's two-run homer. He's off to a terrific start at the dish, slashing .355/.375/.452 with a homer and two RBI.
Apr 16 - 5:10 PM

Tyler Collins homered Wednesday in his first start of the year for the Tigers.

Collins is set to play right field against right-handers until J.D. Martinez comes off the disabled list. At that point, the Tigers will have to decide whether Collins or JaCoby Jones should play center. They'd probably like Jones to win the job. Collins will probably show the steadier bat, but he lacks range in center.
Apr 6 - 5:52 PM

Tyler Collins hit a two-run homer off the Orioles' Dylan Bundy on Thursday.

Collins didn't get much of a chance to win the center-field job this spring as he dealt with a strained lat muscle, but he does figure to play right field against right-handers while J.D. Martinez is out. How he performs there will determine whether he gets a shot in center after Martinez returns. He has a little AL-only value, but we're not expecting much. He finishes the spring with a .250/.273/.462 line.
Mar 30 - 3:48 PM

Tyler Collins went 1-for-3 and drilled a three-run bomb in a loss to the Pirates on Saturday.

This was his second game back in action after missing time with a strained lat muscle that has bothered him throughout camp. He is batting just .220 with two homers in 41 at-bats. Collins has a very shaky hold on the starting centerfield job in Detroit. The 26-year-old has seen limited major league action over the last three seasons, holding a career line of .253/.309/.401 with nine home runs and 44 RBI in 134 games.
Mar 25 - 6:52 PM

Tyler Collins returned to action Friday and went 1-for-3 against the Braves.

Collins missed a few more days with his troublesome lat muscle. He was able to play center field today, which seems like a good sign. Still, it's been a rough spring for him while dealing with the injury -- he's hit just .211/.225/.342 in 38 at-bats -- and it remains to be seen what the Tigers will do with him. While he's not a particularly good platoon option in center field, he is out of options and the Tigers don't want to lose him.
Mar 24 - 5:57 PM

Tyler Collins (lat) is being held out of action until Friday.

Collins had a bit of a setback with a lat muscle injury over the weekend, so the Tigers are giving him some rest. He's one of a handful of players in the mix for center field duties this season.
Mar 22 - 12:31 PM

Tyler Collins (lat) played long toss Monday morning in Tigers camp.

Collins was scratched from a Grapefruit League game Sunday after experiencing a flareup of discomfort in his left lat muscle, but it's clearly not a major setback. The outfielder will look to return to live action sometime this week.
Mar 20 - 10:23 AM

Tyler Collins was scratched from Sunday's lineup after having a setback with his strained left lat.

The Tigers are saying it's in a different area of his back this time, but it's a setback nonetheless. Collins is likely to start against righties in center field if his health cooperates, but he's had trouble staying on the field this spring.
Mar 19 - 12:05 PM

Tyler Collins hit his first spring homer off Joe Blanton as the Tigers and Nationals played to a 3-3 tie in 10 innings Monday.

Collins started in center field for the first time this spring, as he had been limited to DH duties by a strained lat. He has some work to do in order to secure a piece of the center field job leading into Opening Day. Today's homer helps, but he's still just 4-for-21 this spring and he offers less range than the Tigers' other center field options.
Mar 13 - 5:15 PM

Tyler Collins (lat) was able to make throws to the bases on Friday without any issues.

Collins has battled a lat strain since early in camp and has yet to play the outfield in a Grapefruit League game. That could change as soon as Sunday or Monday provided he can avoid any setbacks. Collins is competing with JaCoby Jones and Mikie Mahtook for the club's starting job in center field.

Mar 10 - 7:20 PM

Tyler Collins (lat) will throw to bases on Friday.

Assuming that goes well, he should be cleared to make his Grapefruit League debut in center field over the weekend. Collins is behind schedule due to a left lat strain, but he has time to get ready for Opening Day and should start for the Tigers in center field versus righties.
Mar 10 - 9:02 AM

Tyler Collins (lat) could be ready for his Grapefruit League debut by this weekend.

Collins strained his left lat early on in camp, but he resumed throwing late last week. The Tigers would like Collins to form the strong side of a platoon in center field with Mikie Mahtook, but obviously he needs to get on the field and stay healthy first.

Mar 7 - 6:31 PM

Tyler Collins (lat) resumed throwing on Thursday from up to 90 feet.

Collins isn't ready to play center field yet after straining his left lat a week ago, but he's in the Tigers' designated hitter spot Friday. The 26-year-old should be the club's primary center fielder against righties as long as he's healthy.
