Date:

Stuart Pomeranz will undergo surgery on his lower back this offseason.

This explains why Pomeranz was designated for assignment. According to MASN's Roch Kubatko, Pomeranz has a broken vertebrae and the surgery will sideline him through the 2013 season. The Orioles are expected to re-sign him to a minor league deal, but he won't count against the 40-man roster.

Orioles designated RHP Stuart Pomeranz for assignment.

The move clears him from the 40-man roster. Pomeranz owns a 4.49 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 408/169 K/BB ratio over 522 2/3 minor league innings. He could draw interest on waivers.

Orioles activated RHP Stuart Pomeranz from the 60-day disabled list.

Pomeranz made a surprise jump up to the majors this season after languishing in the minors for many years, but he wound up missing lots of time with oblique and leg issues. He'll compete for a middle relief job in spring training if healthy.

Stu Pomeranz had a minor setback due to a leg issue related to his back.

Pomeranz was originally placed on the disabled list in late May with a left oblique strain. The 27-year-old right-hander was just starting to make progress with his throwing program, but it's not clear how long the setback will delay his return.

Stuart Pomeranz (oblique) threw off a flat mound at the Orioles' spring training complex in Florida Saturday.

Pomeranz has been out since late May with an oblique injury and more recently has dealt with a back issue. He could be physically ready to rejoin the Orioles later this month, but it's no guarantee that he'll be added to the major league roster.

Stu Pomeranz is scheduled to have his back examined Tuesday in Florida.

Pomeranz was originally placed on the disabled list in late May with a left oblique strain. The O's were hoping he would be ready to begin a rehab assignment last weekend, but it's been delayed as he deals with back soreness. More should be known after the doctor visit.

Stuart Pomeranz's (oblique) rehab assignment will be delayed a few days due to a sore back.

Stu Pomeranz (oblique) could be ready for a minor league rehab assignment by the middle of July.

Orioles transferred RHP Stuart Pomeranz from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

Pomeranz must have a pretty serious oblique strain, as he's only been out for a little over a week and now won't be able to return until late July. He's posted a 3.00 ERA over six relief innings for the O's this season.

Orioles optioned RHP Stuart Pomeranz to Triple-A Norfolk.

Pomeranz did all he could to stick around, throwing four shutout innings. The O's chose to keep Dana Eveland instead, though, likely because he could throw more innings if need be with Jason Hammel (knee) banged up.
