Mets prospect SS Gavin Cecchini went 3-for-4 with a solo home run on Wednesday for Double-A Binghamton.
The younger brother of Red Sox prospect Garin Cecchini, Gavin, a 2012 first-round draft pick, has found himself this season in the Eastern League, batting .295/.349/.436 with five home runs, 15 doubles and a 24/18 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 59 games for Binghamton. The 21-year-old took a step forward in 2014, producing a career-best eight home runs and 27 doubles between both Class-A levels, but he also batted just .247/.328/.378 in that span. This season, Cecchini has tightened his approach against more advanced pitching (7.2% BB%, 9.6% K%), and it in turn has done wonders for his triple-slash line. Jun 25 - 2:25 PM

Mets prospect SS Gavin Cecchini went 1-for-3 with a solo home run on Monday for Double-A Binghamton.

Cecchini quietly has enjoyed a strong first month at Binghamton, batting .325/.381/.506 with nine extra-base hits and a 7/6 strikeout-to-walk ratio through 22 games. The uptick in production for the 22-year-old is a good sign, as he’s just a .258/.326/.364 hitter in 257 career minor league games. He did begin to show more in-game power last year, accruing eight homers, 27 doubles and five triples between the Low- and High-A levels, but he’s unlikely to offer more than below-average pop at maturity. Meanwhile, Cecchini’s path to the major leagues likely will depend on how the Mets address their current shortstop situation over the course of the season.

Mets shortstop prospect Gavin Cecchini went 2-for-3 with a walk for High-A St. Lucie on Saturday.

Cecchini has struggled offensively since he was promoted to the High-A Florida State League, hitting .200/.270/.256 with two doubles and one home run in 26 games. When he was drafted, there were questions as to whether he will hit enough to reach the major leagues, and he has struggled to prove the doubters wrong, hitting .250/.314/.339 over 192 games in the minor leagues.

Mets shortstop prospect Gavin Cecchini went 2-for-4 with two doubles and a sacrifice fly for Low-A Savannah on Wednesday.

Cecchini has been cold as of late, hitting just .200/.295/.307 over his last 19 games, lowering his season line to .255/.332/.398. He was the 12th overall pick in the 2012 draft, and his batting has yet to take a step forward. Other than a two week period in which he was hot, Cecchini has struggled with the bat in the South Atlantic League.

Mets shortstop prospect Gavin Cecchini went 3-for-6 with a double for Low-A Savannah on Saturday.

He has been raking over the past six games, hitting .520/.571/.720 with three doubles and a triple and is hitting .276/.356/.400 for the season. Cecchini is projected to stay at shortstop long term, but there are questions as to whether he has enough power to let his average contact ability flourish. If he can hit, he's a solid shortstop at the major league level, but he has a long way to go to show he can hit.

Mets prospect shortstop Gavin Cecchini was placed on the seven-day disabled list with a left ankle sprain.

At the time of the injury, the 19-year-old was batting .259/.305/.315 with three doubles, two stolen bases and nine strikeouts through 15 games for Short-Season Brooklyn Cyclones in the New York-Penn League. Selected No. 12 overall in the 2012 First-Year Player Draft, Cecchini batted .246/.311/.330 with 12 extra-base hits last summer in the rookie-level Appalachian League.

Mets first-round pick Gavin Cecchini suffered a "small fracture" to his middle finger after getting hit by a pitch Wednesday, and is out indefinitely.

The minor league season ends soon, so the Mets figure to shut him down as a precautionary measure. "I'm not one to estimate recovery time. Fortunately, he's already had a pretty full year," VP of scouting Paul DePodesta said. Cecchini, the 12th overall pick in this year's draft, was hitting .250 with one home run, 13 RBI and two steals in 132 plate appearances with the Mets' rookie league affiliate prior to the injury.

Adam Rubin of ESPN New York reports that the Mets have agreed to terms with first-round pick shortstop Gavin Cecchini.

Cecchini was selected 12th overall in Monday's First-Year Player Draft. He'll get $2.3 million, which is a little below the slot value of $2.55 million. The 18-year-old confirmed on his Twitter account Thursday that he is headed to New York, presumably to undergo a physical.

The Mets selected high-school SS Gavin Cecchini with the No. 12 pick in the 2012 draft.

Cecchini's brother, Garin, was picked in the 2010 draft and is in the Red Sox organization. Gavin is a heady player whose instincts have made him a solid fielder. Scouts, however, believe his long-term position may be second base. The younger Cecchini has a smooth, quick stroke. As long as he sticks in the middle of the infield, his bat will prove to be an asset. Described as "scrappy," a "hard-worker," and a "smart player," the thinking is that Gavin, who has been speaking to his brother about pro baseball for two years, is about as low risk a high-school pick as you can make at No. 12.
