Zach Eflin fired a three-hit shutout in Friday’s 4-0 victory over the Pirates.
Elfin needed exactly 100 pitches to go the distance for his second career complete game and his first shutout. So, yes, he fell just one pitch shy of a "Maddux." The 22-year-old was very efficient, throwing 68 pitches for strikes while walking none and striking out six. Elfin had a rough major league debut against the Blue Jays back on June 14, but he owns a 2.08 ERA in seven starts since. He’ll attempt to keep it going next week against the Marlins on the road. Zach Eflin secured a quality start in Sunday's loss to the Mets, yielding three runs on five hits over six innings.

Eflin struck out two and walked two on the afternoon. He surrendered solitary runs in the second, third and fifth innings, the loudest of which came when Curtis Granderson rocked a solo home run in the third. Sunday's outing was the 22-year-old rookie's seventh career start (all this season). He will carry a 4.14 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 20/8 K/BB ratio into a road date with the Pirates next time out.
Jul 17 - 5:02 PM

Zach Eflin pitched well in an impressive victory over the Rockies at Coors Field on Sunday, allowing just two runs on seven hits over six innings.

The right-hander struck out three and walked two on the afternoon. It's the second consecutive win for the 22-year-old rookie hurler. In six first-half starts with the Phillies, Eflin registered a 2-2 record, 4.05 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 18/6 K/BB ratio across 35 1/3 innings.
Jul 10 - 8:14 PM

Zach Eflin picked up his first major league victory in style, allowing one run in a complete game 5-1 win over the Braves.

If not for an Ender Inciarte solo homer in the seven inning, Eflin would have had a "Maddux," as he completed the effort in only 92 pitches. He surrendered six hits, didn't walk anyone and struck out six. Eflin was pummeled for nine runs -- eight earned -- in his major league debut last month, but he's posted a 2.03 ERA and walked just one batter over four outings since. He'll be tested in his final start before the All-Star break on Sunday at Coors Field.
Jul 5 - 9:43 PM

Zach Eflin yielded four runs -- three earned -- in six innings Wednesday against the Diamondbacks.

Eflin has been effective in three straight starts after getting bombed by the Blue Jays in his major league debut, but he's totaled just nine strikeouts in 20 1/3 innings to date. He's going to have to pick that up.
Jun 29 - 7:53 PM

Zach Eflin pitched six innings and allowed just an unearned run Friday in a no-decision against the Giants.

Eflin left with a 2-1 lead, but it vanished almost immediately in the seventh. Still, this was a second straight nice outing for him after he gave up eight earned runs in 2 2/3 innings in his major league debut 10 days ago. He remains a weak bet outside of deep NL-only leagues, but he won't embarrass himself.
Jun 25 - 2:05 AM

Zach Eflin allowed two earned runs over 5 2/3 innings Sunday in a loss to the Diamondbacks.

Eflin looked much sharper than he did in his MLB debut Tuesday against the Blue Jays, but he got only one run of support on Sunday and fell to 0-2 in two major league starts. The young right-hander struck out three Arizona hitters while yielding only one walk and four total hits. He'll try to build off those results on his next turn against the Giants at AT&T Park.
Jun 19 - 4:38 PM

Zach Eflin will make his second major league start on Sunday against the Diamondbacks.

Eflin was shelled for nine runs -- eight earned -- over 2 2/3 innings Tuesday afternoon in Toronto, but the Phillies will stick with him and hope he can show improvement at home versus Arizona. "It still was a dream come true," Eflin said Tuesday. "I was out there in front of 50,000 people playing the game I love." The 22-year-old right-hander had a promising 2.90 ERA, 0.89 WHIP, and 55/11 K/BB ratio through 68 1/3 innings this season with Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Jun 14 - 4:03 PM

In his major league debut, Zach Eflin was hammered for nine runs (eight earned) in 2 2/3 innings Tuesday against the Blue Jays.

Ouch. The eight earned runs are the most allowed by a Phillies pitcher in his major league debut since Russ Miller way back in 1927. He allowed nine hits, including three homers. It was a tough matchup against an offense which is finally showing what they are capable of doing. On the bright side, things should only get better from here.
Jun 14 - 3:34 PM

Phillies purchased the contract of RHP Zach Eflin from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

With Vince Velasquez on the disabled list, Eflin will make his major league debut Tuesday against the Blue Jays. The 22-year-old earned the promotion after posting a 2.90 ERA and 55/11 K/BB ratio over 68 1/3 innings at Triple-A this season. Those in mixed fantasy leagues can afford to wait and see, but he should be owned in NL-only formats.
Jun 14 - 9:32 AM

With Vince Velasquez on the disabled list, Zach Eflin will be recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to make his major league debut on Tuesday against the Blue Jays in Toronto.

It's a difficult first assignment for the 22-year-old right-hander who sports a 2.90 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 55/11 K/BB ratio across 68 1/3 innings at Triple-A. It still remains unclear how much time Velasquez may miss, so Eflin has an opportunity to stick in the rotation with a strong showing. He's definitely in play in NL-only formats, and could be worth a gamble in deeper mixed leagues as well.

Jun 11 - 9:12 AM

Phillies RHP prospect Zach Eflin earned his third win by delivering 6 1/3 shutout innings Wednesday for Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

It was a nice bounceback effort for Eflin after allowing six hits and five runs in his previous outing. The 22-year-old is undefeated in four starts this year with a 2.05 ERA. He's only walked three batters this season and has held opponents to a brutal .187 average over 91 at-bats. We'd be surprised if Eflin doesn't make his big league debut some time in 2016.
Apr 28 - 12:31 PM

Phillies RHP prospect Zach Eflin allowed two hits over eight scoreless frames Sunday in a win for Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

It was another breathtaking performance for Eflin, who is now 2-0 with a sparkling 0.64 ERA in two starts this year. The 22-year-old finished the afternoon with a season-high five strikeouts. He faced one batter over the minimum while completing his longest outing since May 22. 62 of his 91 pitches went for strikes. Eflin has a good chance to make his big league debut in 2016.

Apr 18 - 3:33 PM

Phillies prospect Zach Eflin tossed eight scoreless frames Sunday in a win for Double-A Reading.

He has yet to allow a run in 14 innings of work this season. The 21-year-old has induced 21 groundouts over that stretch. Opponents have batted .143 against him, down from .281 in 2014. Eflin's first year in the Phillies' system is off to an excellent start. Look for him to keep it going next time out versus Harrisburg.

Phillies pitching prospect Zach Eflin looked dominant Sunday in his Double-A debut, limiting Portland to four hits and one walk in six scoreless frames.

Ten of the 18 outs he recorded came on ground balls. Eflin was dealt twice during the offseason: once from San Diego to Los Angeles and again from L.A. to Philadelphia in the Jimmy Rollins swap. The 2012 first-round pick is Philadelphia's fifth-ranked prospect, according to MLB.com. The two-seamer is his bread and butter pitch.
