Phillies transferred RHP Zach Eflin from the 10-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.
Eflin is now officially done for the season with a right shoulder strain. The 23-year-old right-hander finished with a disappointing 6.16 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, and 35/12 K/BB ratio in 11 starts covering 64 1/3 innings. He'll probably have to compete for a spot in the rotation next spring. Sep 12 - 2:43 PM

Date:

Phillies placed RHP Zach Eflin on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to August 20, with a right shoulder strain.

Eflin suffered the injury during Friday's start and will now get some extended rest. His exit was originally considered precautionary, so perhaps he'll be ready to return around the beginning of September.
Aug 22 - 12:52 PM

Updating an earlier item, Zach Eflin left Friday night's start against the Giants with right shoulder discomfort.

His exit was considered precautionary, though Eflin will be further examined on Saturday. "It's just something I wasn't comfortable continuing with," he said. "I've had some soreness back there before, but not really like this." The 23-year-old has struggled to a 5.85 ERA across 22 major league starts.
Aug 19 - 8:34 PM

Zach Eflin was tagged for six runs in five innings by the Giants in a loss Friday.

Eflin won in his return to the majors 10 days ago, but he's given up 10 runs and four homers in 10 1/3 innings since. The home run ball is always going to be a big problem for him, and we doubt he's truly one of the Phillies' five best rotation options right now. Ben Lively is more deserving of that spot.
Aug 19 - 1:29 AM

Zach Eflin notched his first win of the season by holding the Braves to two runs in seven innings on Tuesday.

Eflin, who had been 0-3 with a 6.13 ERA in eight starts, was making his first appearance for the Phillies since the end of May. He'll likely get a chance to stay in the Phillies rotation, but he remains a poor bet for fantasy purposes.
Aug 8 - 11:01 PM

Phillies recalled RHP Zach Eflin from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Eflin will start Tuesday in Atlanta. He's posted a 6.13 ERA over eight starts with the Phillies this season and hasn't been much better at Lehigh Valley (4.57 ERA). The righty can be avoided in fantasy leagues.
Aug 8 - 10:46 AM

An MRI on Zach Eflin's sore right elbow came back negative.

Looks like Eflin might have dodged a bullet with this one. He is expected to resume throwing next week. The 23-year-old right-hander initially began experiencing elbow discomfort in his first minor league start after being shuttled down to Triple-A on May 29.
Jun 7 - 5:33 PM

Zach Eflin will have his right elbow examined by a doctor in Philadelphia on Tuesday after he felt soreness his last start at Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Eflin was clobbered in his final three starts for the Phillies before being demoted last week and he got hurt in his first outing back in the minors, so it's been a rough stretch for him. More should be known about his status after Tuesday's exam.
Jun 5 - 6:13 PM

Phillies optioned RHP Zach Eflin to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Eflin was hammered for seven runs over five innings Sunday in a loss to the Reds and now owns a 6.13 ERA through eight starts this season. Nick Pivetta and Ben Lively are the most likely alternatives to take his spot in the rotation.
May 29 - 9:26 AM

Zach Eflin fell to 0-3 on the season after yielding seven earned runs over five innings Sunday in a loss to the Reds.

Eflin surrendered nine hits, including four home runs, in the ugly home outing at Citizens Bank Park. He walked one and struck out three. The right-hander now owns a 6.13 ERA and 1.43 WHIP through eight starts in 2017.
May 28 - 4:39 PM

Zach Eflin gave up eight runs and three homers in six innings Tuesday in a loss to the Rockies.

Eflin had been serviceable to date because he managed to give up a modest four homers in 36 innings. Seven homers in 42 innings seems more like what should have been expected, given his poor strikeout rate and lack of ability to induce grounder after grounder. He might hang as a fifth starter, but he doesn't have much upside beyond that.
May 23 - 10:11 PM

Zach Eflin was beat around for seven runs in four innings during a loss to the Rangers on Wednesday.

He gave up 11 base hits but none of them left the yard. It didn't matter much though because he still gave up runs in every inning he pitched, including a four-spot in the third frame. The first three runs he allowed came home on sacrifice flies, and the fourth scored on a wild pitch. Eflin saw his ERA rise from 2.81 all the way to 4.25 by the time his night was over. Nights like this will happen when a pitcher has only 18 strikeouts in 36 innings. He lines up for two starts next week at home versus the Rockies and Reds.
May 17 - 11:58 PM

Zach Eflin allowed three earned runs over six innings Wednesday as the Phillies fell to the Mariners.

He left with the game tied at 3-3, but Joaquin Benoit promptly served up five runs to the Mariners in the top of the seventh inning. Eflin gave up nine hits and one walk while striking out five. He's still sitting on an ERA in the 2.00s (2.81), but we'd expect that to change in his next start on the road against the Rangers.
May 10 - 5:07 PM

Zach Eflin pitched seven innings and allowed three runs Thursday against the Cubs.

Eflin had the nice outing despite recording just one strikeout. He's been getting more grounders in his current major league stint, but he's fanned just 12 batters in 26 innings. It's going to be difficult for him to maintain his recent success -- he has a 2.42 ERA -- without missing more bats.
May 4 - 7:00 PM

Zach Eflin allowed two earned runs, four hits and no walks with four strikeouts over seven innings in a no-decision Saturday at L.A. Dodgers.

Eflin threw 68 of his 103 pitches for strikes and he deserved a better fate. Fantasy owners can send their hate mail to closer Hector Neris, as he served up three consecutive homers en route to a blown save to cost Eflin a victory. Eflin is expected to make his next scheduled start Thursday at Chicago Cubs.
