Phillies prospect Zach Eflin tossed eight scoreless frames Sunday in a win for Double-A Reading.
He has yet to allow a run in 14 innings of work this season. The 21-year-old has induced 21 groundouts over that stretch. Opponents have batted .143 against him, down from .281 in 2014. Eflin's first year in the Phillies' system is off to an excellent start. Look for him to keep it going next time out versus Harrisburg. Apr 20 - 2:34 PM

Phillies pitching prospect Zach Eflin looked dominant Sunday in his Double-A debut, limiting Portland to four hits and one walk in six scoreless frames.

Ten of the 18 outs he recorded came on ground balls. Eflin was dealt twice during the offseason: once from San Diego to Los Angeles and again from L.A. to Philadelphia in the Jimmy Rollins swap. The 2012 first-round pick is Philadelphia's fifth-ranked prospect, according to MLB.com. The two-seamer is his bread and butter pitch.

Phillies acquired RHP Zach Eflin and LHP Tom Windle from the Dodgers in exchange for SS Jimmy Rollins.

Eflin was sent from San Diego to Los Angeles in the Matt Kemp deal before being flipped to Philadelphia. The 20-year-old owns a 3.41 ERA, 1.269 WHIP, and 183/65 K/BB ratio in 253 2/3 career minor league innings and makes for an interesting arm as the Phillies rebuild their farm system.

Dodgers acquired RHP Zach Eflin from the Padres in the Matt Kemp trade.

Eflin's stay in Los Angeles won't be long, as he's set to be flipped to the Phillies in a deal for Jimmy Rollins. The 20-year-old owns a 3.41 ERA, 1.269 WHIP, and 183/65 K/BB ratio in 253 2/3 career minor league innings.

Zach Eflin is one of the players being discussed in a possible trade package for Matt Kemp.

The Dodgers have their sights on catcher Yasmani Grandal, but CBS Sports' Jon Heyman says they also want some other prospects from the Padres. Eflin, 20, owns a 3.41 ERA, 1.269 WHIP, and 183/65 K/BB ratio in 253 2/3 career minor league innings. The right-hander was the 33rd overall pick in the 2012 MLB Amateur Draft.

Padres right-handed pitching prospect Zach Eflin is off to a good start in 2014, with a 3.97 ERA over his first four starts for High-A Lake Elsinore.

Eflin's season line is skewed by one bad start when he allowed nine hits (including three home runs, a double, and a triple) and eight runs while in hitter-friendly High Desert. In his last two starts, he has allowed 11 hits, two walks, and one run in 11 1/3 innings while striking out 11 batters. He also sports a 0.77 ERA and a 1.147 WHIP over his past two starts. Eflin has the stuff to be a mid-rotation starter, but he still needs a lot of development to reach his ceiling.

Padres 2012 first-round pick Zach Eflin has been shut down for the rest of the season after a bout with mononucleosis.

The Padres have had all sorts of bad breaks with first-round picks in the past, but the good news is that it isn't an arm injury. The 18-year-old right-hander allowed six runs over seven innings in four appearances with the Padres' Arizona League affiliate prior to being shut down.

The Padres signed high-school RHP Zach Eflin, the No. 33 overall pick in the 2012 draft, to a contract with a $1.2 million bonus.

San Diego saved $325,000 under slot with the signing. Acquired with the Padres' compensatory pick for Heath Bell, Eflin is an electrifying high-school arm. He has a ways to go in his development, but boasts a mid-90s fastball to go along with his huge 6-foot-5, 200-pound frame. He likely fell from the first round over signability concerns, which is why it's fairly surprising that he didn't even get slot value from the Padres. Eflin was reportedly a strong commit to the University of Central Florida, but perhaps he was using that rhetoric as leverage. If all goes to plan, Eflin could be a front-line starter sometime in the next 4-5 years.
