Zach Eflin (knees) will throw live batting practice on Tuesday.

It will be the first time he's faced hitters this spring. Eflin had surgery on both knees last August to attempt to fix the chronic tendinitis he's dealt with for years. However, he experienced more soreness in his knees at the beginning of camp and his schedule has been slowed as a result. It's not a given that he'll be ready for the start of the season.

Zach Eflin (knee) threw a successful bullpen session on Monday in Phillies camp.

Eflin tossed 40-45 pitches and felt great. He had to be scratched from a live batting practice session last Friday due to knee soreness, but it was called "very mild" at the time and he seems to be over it already. The talented 22-year-old right-hander is competing for a spot in the Philadelphia rotation this spring.

Zach Eflin (knee) is scheduled to throw his next bullpen session on Monday.

Eflin was scratched from throwing a live batting practice session on Friday due to "very mild" knee soreness. The young right-hander has dealt with chronic tendinitis in both of his knees and had surgery on each last fall in an effort to correct the issue. It doesn't sound like a major setback at this stage, but it's worth keeping an eye on this spring.
Feb 18 - 8:35 AM

Zach Eflin didn't throw live batting practice as hoped Friday due to "very mild" knee soreness, according to Phillies manager Pete Mackanin.

Eflin has dealt with chronic tendinitis in both knees for years, and he had the problem addresses with surgeries on both knees last fall. He said he felt "great" when he reported to camp, but the righty has encountered his first setback. It could be minor, but it's obviously something to monitor.

Zach Eflin (knees) began a throwing program on Wednesday.

Eflin had a patellar tendinopathy on both knees in August after dealing with pain in his knees he says since Little League. "All of a sudden to go out there and do what I love with no pain, It’s an unbelievable feeling," Eflin said. "I never thought that this day would come that I would be pain-free throwing. I thought that I would always go through it, that it was always something I could deal with it. I’m really, really excited to see what my body can handle when it’s healthy." Eflin will compete in spring training for a spot in the Phillies' rotation.

Eflin's season ended in August after he was diagnosed with patellar tendinopathy in both of his knees and a stress fracture in his right foot. Phillies transferred RHP Zach Eflin from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for Emmanuel Burriss. Eflin, who is dealing with patellar tendinopathy in both knees and a stress fracture in his right foot, is now effectively ruled out for the season.

In addition to his knee injury, Zach Eflin is also dealing with a stress fracture in his right foot.

The stress fracture came to light in a recent MRI. Eflin will receive a second opinion on his injured knees, but manager Pete Mackanin admitted his return is a long shot. Assuming Eflin is done for the year, he'll finish his rookie campaign with three wins and a 5.54 ERA in 11 starts. Adam Morgan will absorb Eflin's spot in the starting rotation.

Phillies placed RHP Zach Eflin on the 15-day DL with patellar tendinopathy in both knees.

The move comes after Eflin was rocked for the third straight start Monday against the Dodgers. The rookie right-hander now owns a 5.54 ERA through 11 starts on the year. The injury would explain his recent struggles. It's unclear how long he'll be sidelined.

Zach Eflin was pounded for seven runs in three innings by the Dodgers on Monday.

Eflin dropped to 3-5 with a 5.54 ERA. If the Phillies were healthier, they'd probably take a look at someone else in the rotation right about now. As is, they seem more likely to stick with the rookie.
