Braves purchased the contract of RHP Lucas Sims from Triple-A Gwinnett.
A former first-round pick, Sims held a 4.40 ERA and walked 92 but also struck out 159 across 141 frames between Double- and Triple-A in 2016. He's been a relative disappointment so far, but Sims is still an interesting prospect. Nov 18 - 10:46 AM

Braves RHP prospect Lucas Sims allowed six hits and one run over 6 2/3 innings Tuesday in a win for Double-A Mississippi.

He finished with seven strikeouts and only let up two walks. Sims obviously has great stuff—he's punched out 110 hitters in only 86 2/3 innings this year—but he hasn't put it all together yet. The right-hander holds a disappointing 5.61 ERA over 18 outings with an underwhelming 6.23 BB/9. Sims spent nearly two months with Triple-A Gwinnett earlier this year but was sent down after posting a 7.56 ERA in 11 appearances.
Jul 13 - 11:48 AM

Braves RHP prospect Lucas Sims matched a career-high with 10 strikeouts Sunday for Double-A Mississippi.

He held Chattanooga to two hits and one unearned run over 5 2/3 innings. Sims is still looking for his first win of 2016 but that shouldn't take away from what he's done this year. Opponents have hit just .140 against him with 26 strikeouts in 50 at-bats. Only three of the eight runs he's allowed this year have been earned. So far, Sims' Achilles heel has been walks. The 21-year-old has already handed out a league-high 10 free passes in only 14 2/3 innings.

Lucas Sims rebounded from an ugly spring debut to strike out four in two scoreless innings versus the Marlins on Thursday.

Sims gave up five runs in 1 2/3 innings his first time out. After finishing 2015 strong, the 2012 first-round pick is a candidate to make his major league debut during the middle of the year. He might not have as much upside as it looked like he did three years back, but he remains a quality pitching prospect.
Mar 10 - 4:24 PM

Braves RHP prospect Lucas Sims notched a career-high 10 strikeouts in Sunday's win for Double-A Mississippi.

Sims let up just three hits and one run over six innings of work. 63 of his 90 pitches went for strikes. He's undefeated over his last four starts, going 3-0 in that span with a 1.99 ERA. Opponents have hit just .179 in 117 at-bats against Sims since his call-up to Double-A. He's posted an excellent 9.98 K/9 across 79 1/3 minor league innings this season.

Braves RHP prospect Lucas Sims allowed just one hit over 5 1/3 shutout innings Tuesday in a win for Double-A Mississippi.

He's posted an excellent 2.16 ERA to go with an equally stellar 10.26 K/9 during his three-game unbeaten streak. The former first-round pick has been on the prospect radar for a while now. His .188 average against in six starts for Mississippi is a definite sign of progress. Of course, he's also allowed 24 walks in only 28 1/3 innings since his call-up. The talented 21-year-old remains a work in progress.

Braves RHP prospect Lucas Sims allowed just one hit over 5 2/3 innings Sunday in a loss for Double-A Mississippi.

Sims was done in by the five walks he allowed. Sunday was just his second start since getting called up from High-A Carolina on July 21. Sims has struck out 11 hitters in those two outings with the same number of walks. The 21-year-old has posted an ugly 1.55 WHIP in 54 2/3 innings this season.

Braves prospect RHP Lucas Sims has been promoted to Double-A Mississippi.

He posted a 5.18 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and 37/23 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 40 innings (nine starts) at High-A Carolina. Ranked as the No. 54 overall prospect by Baseball Prospectus headed into the season, Sims spent most of May and June on the disabled list with an undisclosed injury suffered in the May 12 bus crash involving the Mudcats. The 21-year-old right-hander struggled in his return to Carolina on July 5, but had posted a 0.97 ERA with 11 strikeouts in 9 1/3 frames across his last two starts. This will be Sims' first taste of the Double-A level.

Braves pitching prospect Lucas Sims lowered his ERA to 5.53 Saturday with a seven-inning, one-run effort for High-A Carolina.

The 2012 first-round pick hasn't lived up to expectations, but he's done a bit better over his last two starts (2.08 ERA in 13 innings). Sims tied a season-high with six strikeouts Saturday while only allowing one walk. The one walk is particularly encouraging for Sims, who has already given up 15 free passes in just 27 2/3 innings.

Braves right-handed pitching prospect Lucas Sims went seven innings for High-A Lynchburg on Wednesday, scattering six hits and two walks while striking out seven.

Sims was hit relatively hard despite the good strikeout rate, allowing three singles, two doubles, and a triple. He has had a rough season, but the Braves have always done well developing pitchers, so Sims' poor stat line will be viewed through the lens of rose-colored glasses. He was the No. 21 overall pick in 2012.

Braves prospect right-handed pitcher Lucas Sims allowed six hits, one walk, one hit batsman and two runs (one earned) over 6 2/3 innings, striking out five batters for High-A Lynchburg.

Sims has had a rough season, putting up a 4.97 ERA and a 1.342 WHIP with a surprisingly low 5.5 K/9. Opposing batters are hitting .251/.332/.395 off Sims. He is an athletic right-hander who has the potential to be a No. 2 pitcher, but his components are substantially down from his full-season debut in 2013.

Braves prospect RHP Lucas Sims turned in his best outing of the season Thursday, striking out six batters over seven no-hit innings for High-A Lynchburg.

Though right-hander walked four batters in the game, he combined with another Lynchburg reliever to no-hit High-A Wilmington. Aside from his outing Thursday, Sims' season has been somewhat disappointing, as the 20-year-old has posted a 4.71 ERA and 46-31 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 84 innings spanning 16 starts. In his 2013 full-season debut at Low-A Rome, Sims registered a 2.62 ERA, .203 BAA and 134-64 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 116 2/3 innings.

Braves right-handed pitching prospect Lucas Sims put together a solid outing on Friday for High-A Lynchburg, fanning four and allowing only one run over six innings.

He allowed only four hits (three singles and a double) and two walks. Sims has yet to have any electric outings, but he has yet to have any terrible outings, so it is business as usual for the solid Sims. Sims is the team's top pitching prospect, if not top prospect overall, so expect him to end the season with Double-A Mississippi.

Braves prospect RHP Lucas Sims turned his worst start of the season Sunday, allowing five runs (four earned) on four hits in six innings for High-A Lynchburg.

The 19-year-old right-hander struck out four and walked two in the outing. Sims' recent struggles has resulted in a 4.71 ERA and 15/6 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 21 innings spanning four starts. He put himself on the map last year in his full-season debut for Low-A Rome, where he posted a 2.62 ERA and 134/46 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Sims is considered the team's top pitching prospect this year, so expect him to bounce back from the rough start and likely finish the season at Double-A Mississippi.

According to Carroll Rogers of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Braves have signed first-round pick RHP Lucas Sims.

The Braves have also agreed to deals with second-round pick LHP Alex Wood, third-round pick C Bryan De La Rosa, fourth-round pick OF Justin Black, fifth-round pick OF Blake Brown and sixth-round pick C Josh Elander. Sims was selected 21st overall out of a Georgia high school. He already possesses a power arsenal.
