Indians designated OF James Ramsey for assignment.

The move clears a roster spot for veteran reliever Joba Chamberlain, who was officially added to the major league bullpen on Monday afternoon. Ramsey, the 23rd overall pick in the 2012 MLB Amateur Draft, was acquired from the Cardinals in 2014 for Justin Masterson. He batted just .243/.327/.382 last season for the Indians' Triple-A affiliate.

Indians optioned OF James Ramsey to Triple-A Columbus; re-assigned Cs Jeremy Lucas and Anthony Recker, OF Michael Choice and INF Eric Stamets to minor league camp.

The Indians have jobs available in their outfield this spring, but Ramsey flopped with just two hits in 21 at-bats. He could debut at some point in 2016.

Indians purchased the contract of OF James Ramsey from Triple-A Columbus.

The roster move protects Ramsey from next month's Rule 5 draft. The 25-year-old outfielder spent the entire 2015 season at Triple-A where he hit .243/.327/.382 with 12 homers and 42 RBI in 126 games. He could challenge for a reserve outfielder role with the Indians in the spring.

Indians prospect OF James Ramsey went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and double on Monday for Triple-A Columbus.

Ramsey, who was acquired from the Cardinals at last year’s non-waiver trade deadline in exchange for Justin Masterson, is off to a respectable start this season in the International League, batting .244/.324/.405 with 11 extra-base hits (five home runs) and 15 RBI in 35 games. The 25-year-old outfielder stands out for his pure hitting ability and defensive versatility in the outfield, but he’s not a true center fielder and lacks the power necessary to hold down a corner spot. Expect Ramsey to break through in a fourth-outfielder role with the Tribe later this season.

Indians acquired OF James Ramsey from the Cardinals in exchange for RHP Justin Masterson.

A 2012 first-round pick, Ramsey is having a nice season as he repeats Double-A, batting .300/.389/.527 with 13 homers over 67 games. He was ranked by Baseball America before the season as the team's No. 8 prospect. The 24-year-old has been assigned to Triple-A Columbus.

Cardinals prospect OF James Ramsey was 3-for-6 with two doubles and two runs scored on Tuesday for Double-A Springfield.

Ramsey, the No. 23 overall pick in the 2012 draft, has opened the 2014 season on a tear, batting .476 through his first six games. Last season the 24-year-old spent time at three different levels and batted .265/.373/.440 with 16 doubles, 16 home runs and a 121/65 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 112 games. Ramsey might have a chance to reach the major leagues later this season, but he has both Oscar Taveras and Stephen Piscotty ahead of him on the organizational depth chart.

Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the Cardinals have a deal in place with 2012 first-round OF James Ramsey.

Ramsey is a college senior, so he was fully expected to sign. Financials of his deal aren't available, but the Cards should be able to lock him up for well under the recommended slot for the No. 23 overall pick of $1.775 million.

Cardinals selected Florida State OF James Ramsey with the No. 23 overall pick in the 2012 draft.

A 22nd-round pick in 2011, Ramsey elected to return to Florida State for his senior year of college. Billed as a "hard worker" and "leader," Ramsey may be knocked as a low-upside pick, but truly does boast above-average intangibles to go along with a plus glove and speed. He won't hit for power, but his well-rounded game could have him in the big leagues sooner rather than later.
