Cesar Hernandez told reporters Thursday that he wants to steal 30-40 bases in 2017.
Hernandez went 17-for-30 in stolen base attempts last season while slashing .294/.371/.393 over 622 plate appearances. 30-40 steals sounds like a real reach, but 25 might be doable if he really puts his mind to it. The 26-year-old second baseman added 15 pounds of muscle over the winter to help his durability. Feb 16 - 9:16 AM

Phillies and INF Cesar Hernandez avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $2.55 million contract.

It's slightly closer to the figure that Hernandez filed at ($2.8 million vs. $2.0 million), but close enough to the midpoint that both sides should be happy with this resolution. Hernandez hit .294/.371/.393 with six homers, 39 RBI and 17 stolen bases during a breakout 2016 season.

Cesar Hernandez requested $2.8 million and was offered $2 million by the Phillies when arbitration figures were exchanged on Friday.

With the two sides being relatively close, there's a decent chance that they meet somewhere in the middle and avoid going to a hearing in February. MLBTradeRumors.com projects Hernandez to earn $2.5 million through arbitration, which leans slightly toward the player's side.

Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com reports that Cesar Hernandez was "a hot name" in trade talks at the general managers meetings this week.

It looks like the Phillies might want to sell high on Hernandez after he batted .298/.413/.411 in the second half this past season. Hernandez is arbitration-eligible for the first time this offseason, so Philly would also be shipping him out before he started getting expensive. Salisbury notes that the Phillies could pursue a trade for Howie Kendrick to take over for Hernandez at second base as a stop-gap before handing the job off to one of their younger players.

Cesar Hernandez went 2-for-3 with three walks and three runs scored in Thursday's marathon loss to the Mets.

Hernandez chipped in a single and a triple in the 11-inning contest, and it was the second time this year that he's reached base five times in a game. The 26-year-old has a sneaky nine-game hitting streak going, during which he's 13-for-37 (.351) with a pair of triples and eight runs scored. The good stretch has his overall line up to .293/.367/.398 in 146 games.

Cesar Hernandez went 0-for-2 with three walks and two runs scored against the Pirates on Monday.

Hernandez was also thrown out on a stolen base attempt. While the 26-year-old has swiped 17 bases this season, he has also been caught 11 times. Only Starling Marte and Jonathan Villar have been thrown out more this season. Of course, Marte (47 steals) and Villar (53 steals) have had a lot more success on the basepaths.

Cesar Hernandez went 2-for-4 and swiped his 17th base of the season as the Phillies were shut out by the Nationals on Saturday in Washington D.C.

As a club, the Phillies totaled just five hits on the day, with Hernandez the only one contributing multiple knocks. He has done a nice job for the Phillies this season, slashing .288/.356/.394 with six homers, 36 RBI and 17 swipes.

Cesar Hernandez went 2-for-3 with a walk and swiped a base on Wednesday versus the Marlins.

Both hits were singles and he also got caught stealing. The 26-year-old second baseman has gotten everyday playing time all year long for the rebuilding Phillies. He has provided solid value with his .289 batting average, .354 on-base percentage and 16 stolen bases. He doesn't have much pop however, having notched only six home runs and 36 RBI in 460 at-bats.

Cesar Hernandez delivered a two-run double and scored a run Friday against the Mets.

Hernandez went 1-for-5 on the night. The 26-year-old had a lowly .248 batting average back on June 20, but he’s hitting .348 over his last 53 games and has claimed the leadoff spot in the Phillies’ lineup. He can be erratic on the bases at times, but he’s capable of helping mixed fantasy leagues right now.

Cesar Hernandez went 3-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored to help the Phillies double up the Cardinals 4-2 on Saturday.

Given that Hernandez has nine triples this season, it's actually worth saying that he finished just a triple shy of the cycle in the game. The homer was his fourth of the year, giving him 30 RBI and 49 runs scored. The 26-year-old has fairly quietly put up a nice season at the dish, batting .298/.358/.400 after Saturday's win.

Cesar Hernandez (foot) has returned to the Phillies starting lineup on Saturday.

Hernandez fouled a ball off his foot earlier in the week and was forced to sit out a pair of games. He's back in the leadoff spot in the Phillies lineup for Saturday's showdown against Luke Weaver and the Cardinals.

An X-ray on Cesar Hernandez's right foot came back clean.

Cesar Hernandez missed Thursday's win over the Dodgers with a right foot injury.

Hernandez fouled a ball off his foot earlier this week and is still feeling the effects. He was in the Phillies' original starting lineup for Thursday night but was scratched just before first pitch. Taylor Featherston filled in and went 1-for-4 with an RBI double. Hernandez is day-to-day.

Cesar Hernandez was a late scratch Thursday against the Dodgers.

The reason for his absence is unknown. Taylor Featherston will sub in for Hernandez at second base and bat eighth against Dodgers right-hander Ross Stripling. The Phillies should have an update on Hernandez's status after the game.

Cesar Hernandez singled and swatted a solo homer in Tuesday's loss to the Dodgers.

He also drew a walk, reaching base in three of his four trips to the plate. Hernandez has rebounded from a slow start and now sports a nice .292/.352/.387 batting line on the season. Cameron Rupp and Ryan Howard also homered for the Phillies.
