Cesar Hernandez needs surgery on his left thumb to repair ligament damage.

He had already been ruled out for the season due to a dislocated thumb, but there's evidently a ligament issue, as well. It's a bummer of a way to end a solid season for Hernandez, but he'll be fine by the time spring training rolls around.
Sep 14 - 4:14 PM

Phillies placed INF Cesar Hernandez on the 60-day disabled list with a dislocated left thumb.

Hernandez collided with Anthony Rizzo of the Cubs on Sunday afternoon while trying to field a ball and is now done for the season. The 25-year-old infielder will finish up with a .272/.339/.348 batting line and 19 stolen bases in 127 games. He doesn't hit well enough to be assured of a starting job heading into 2016.

The Phillies confirmed that Cesar Hernandez suffered a dislocated left thumb in Sunday's game.

He collided with base runner Anthony Rizzo while attempting to field a ball. It's unclear how long he'll be sidelined.
Sep 13 - 4:09 PM

Cesar Hernandez exited Sunday's game versus the Cubs with an apparent dislocated left thumb.

Hernadez suffered the ugly injury when he collided with Anthony Rizzo while trying to field a ball. We'll have to wait and see what the Phillies say, but it certainly looked like an ailment that will keep him out for a while.
Sep 13 - 3:56 PM

Cesar Hernandez will move to shortstop with the return of Chase Utley (ankle) on Friday.

Hernandez will still be a regular and Utley is expected to play about four days per week, which means Freddy Galvis is likely see the biggest drop in playing time. Hernandez has some experience at shortstop, having played there 15 games in the majors and on 70 occasions in the minors.

Cesar Hernandez doubled, tripled, knocked in two runs, and scored once in four at-bats as the Phillies took care of the Rays on Monday.

Hernandez gave the Phillies a 3-2 lead in the second inning with a two-run double, then scored again in the fifth after tripling. Extra-base hits haven't exactly been Hernandez's niche this year, as 44 of his 60 hits have been singles. He's hitting .280/.365/.369 with 23 RBI and 12 stolen bases and will serve as the Phillies' regular second baseman for the foreseeable future.
Jul 20 - 9:54 PM

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro on Tuesday indicated that Cesar Hernandez will remain the club's second baseman even after Chase Utley (ankle) returns from the disabled list.

"Not for me he's not," Amaro said when asked if Utley would still be the everyday second baseman when he returns. "Cesar Hernandez is our best second baseman." It's hard to argue with the GM given what Utley did before hitting the DL and what Hernandez has done this season, but it's still a little surprising to hear Amaro be so blunt. There remains no timetable for Utley's return.
Jul 7 - 7:41 PM

Cesar Hernandez went 3-for-4 with a walk and two stolen bases as the Phillies won in 10 innings against the Braves on Sunday.

Hernandez is on a 10-game hitting streak now, with six of those games featuring multiple hits. He singled in the 10th inning to help the Phillies break a scoreless tie. The pair of stolen bases brings him up to 11 in 14 attempts on the season. There's no way his .299/.385/.385 line is sustainable as he has a .556 BABIP since June 22, but he'll get playing time and stolen base opportunities while he's hot so he has fantasy utility for the time being.
Jul 5 - 4:47 PM

Cesar Hernandez went 1-for-3 with an RBI single in Friday's loss to the Braves.

Hernandez's RBI single off Julio Teheran in the fourth inning would score the only run that the Phillies managed in the game. While his power is almost non-existent, he should continue to see at-bats as long as he's able to keep up the average portion of his .285/.374/.376 slash-line.
Jul 3 - 10:41 PM

Phillies interim manager Pete Mackanin said Tuesday that he "would like to think that Cesar (Hernandez) has proven that he deserves a chance to be the everyday second baseman."

Hernandez, 25, entered Tuesday batting .277/.365/.365 on the season and .328/.394/.406 in June. Chase Utley, meanwhile, is on the disabled list with an ankle injury and sports an ugly .179/.257/.275 line this season. It's hard to believe the Phils would bench Utley even given his struggles, and Mackanin did note that he didn't "want to get ahead of myself." However, if Hernandez keeps performing, it's possible. Notable is that the Phillies have a $15 million club option for 2016 on Utley that automatically vests if he reaches 500 plate appearances.
Jun 30 - 8:31 PM

Cesar Hernandez's bat continued to stay hot as he went 2-for-4 with an RBI, a run, and a stolen base in Monday's loss to the Brewers.

Fresh off a four-hit performance on Sunday, Hernandez logged his fifth multi-hit performance in seven games on Monday. He knocked in the Phillies' first run in the first inning with an infield single and later came around to score on a balk. Hernandez is batting .277/.365/.365 with 25 runs scored, 16 RBI, and seven stolen bases and is now getting regular at-bats while Chase Utley is sidelined. It's not known yet when Utley returns, so those in daily leagues might find utility in Hernandez as a cheap source of stolen bases.
Jun 29 - 10:49 PM

Cesar Hernandez singled four times in as many at-bats, helping the Phillies in a win over the Nationals in the back end of Sunday's doubleheader.

It's the second four-hit game of Hernandez's career, with the other occuring on September 28, 2013. The Phillies, despite scoring eight runs, only brought him home once, at the end of their four-run second inning. Hernandez has been hitting well as of late, logging multi-hit efforts in three of his last five games. With Chase Utley on the shelf, he should be a regular in the lineup. He's hitting .271/.361/.361 in 163 plate appearances.
Jun 28 - 9:38 PM

Cesar Hernandez delivered a go-ahead pinch-hit two-run single in Friday's 4-1 win over the Nationals.

Hernandez came up to hit for Luis Garcia in the bottom of the seventh after Gio Gonzalez loaded the bases before being pulled in favor of Xavier Cedeno. He poked an opposite field single to bring two runs home and put the Phillies ahead for good. The 24-year-old hit .237 with a .571 OPS in 66 games with Philadelphia last season and figures to serve as utility infielder this season.
Apr 10 - 10:11 PM

Cesar Hernandez went 0-for-4 and committed two errors at second base Friday against the Rays.

The versatile Hernandez is out of options, which figured to give him a pretty good chance of making the Phillies as a bench player. He needs to do better than this, though. He's currently 2-for-20 this spring, with one steal and one caught stealing. Last year, he hit .237/.290/.281 in 114 major league at-bats.
