Pirates prospect Austin Meadows went 1-for-5 on Sunday for Triple-A Indianapolis.
Meadows did end up scoring a run after the hit, but he also struck out twice. There is a golden opportunity for Meadows to reach the big leagues right now, but the results have been too poor to even think about calling him up at this point. All the talent is here, but Meadows needs to start hitting. Soon. May 1 - 1:38 PM

Pirates GM Neal Huntington told reporters Tuesday that top outfield prospect Austin Meadows is not yet ready for the major leagues.

Meadows' path to the show opened wide on Tuesday when Starling Marte was hit with an 80-game PED suspension, but the Pirates aren't going to rush the 21-year-old. Meadows tore up the lower minors, but the 2013 first-rounder has batted just .202/.280/.417 through 186 plate appearances at the Triple-A level. Andrew McCutchen is moving back to center field for the Bucs and Jose Osuna has been called up to provide depth. We could see Meadows in May or June.

Pirates top prospect Austin Meadows picked up two hits on Wednesday night for Triple-A Indianapolis.

If there's such thing as "needing" a two-hit game in the middle of April, Meadows would qualify. He came into the night 1-for-22, which is probably not going to get it done. Keep in mind that the 2013 first-rounder won't turn 22 for another month, and that the sample size of his struggles is extremely small. All that being said, it's nice to see some success for the talented outfielder. Here's hoping this is the start of a hot streak.
Apr 13 - 1:38 PM

Austin Meadows drilled a pinch-hit solo home run in a win over the Tigers on Saturday.

He was batting for Andrew McCutchen in the eighth inning when he took southpaw Kyle Ryan deep to provide the winning run. Meadows is batting .308 with two homers in 39 chances this spring. The 21-year-old top prospect is knocking on the door of the major leagues but it will likely take an injury or a trade involving one of the Pirates' stellar outfielders before he gets an opportunity.
Mar 25 - 6:32 PM

Austin Meadows homered off the Braves' Jaime Garcia in Tuesday's win.

All three Pirates starting outfielders are taking part in the WBC -- and likely will be for the duration of the tournament -- so Meadows is going to get a long look this spring. The top prospect will be a candidate to come up later this year if someone gets hurt or if Andrew McCutchen is traded.
Mar 7 - 4:46 PM

Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports relays that the Pirates plan on moving OF prospect Austin Meadows to a corner outfield spot at Triple-A Indianapolis.

Multiple reports have the Pirates searching for an Andrew McCutchen trade partner this offseason, with Passan writing that the team has "been the aggressors" and is not approaching the situation passively. The offshoot of this is some potential outfield tinkering. Should McCutchen be traded, Starling Marte would be moved to center, with Gregory Polanco patrolling left and (eventually) Meadows likely for right field.

Pirates OF prospect Austin Meadows homered and plated a career-high five runs Tuesday in a win for Triple-A Indianapolis.

His night included a first-inning sac fly, a two-run single in the third inning and later a two-run blast in the fifth. It was good to see Meadows break out after getting off to a rough start in Triple-A. Since his promotion in mid-June, Meadows has hit just .234 with 28 strikeouts in 107 at-bats for Indianapolis. If Meadows can figure things out at Triple-A, he could make his big league debut early next season.

Pirates OF prospect Austin Meadows kept his hitting streak alive with a home run Thursday in a win for Double-A Altoona.

He also doubled and drove in two runs. The 21-year-old has now hit safely in 18 straight games, hitting .435 over that stretch with 17 extra-base hits. Meadows' first-inning blast was his first career homer against a left-hander. He had been homerless in 91 plate appearances against southpaws before going deep off Erie lefty Anthony Fernandez. Meadows doesn't have enough at-bats to qualify for the batting title after missing time with an orbital fracture, but if he did, his .310 average would be good for fourth-best in the Eastern League.

Pirates OF prospect Austin Meadows extended his hitting streak to 17 games Wednesday in Double-A Altoona's loss to Erie.

Meadows went 3-for-4 with a double and a solo home run. He's hit an astounding .423 with 16 runs scored and 15 extra-base hits during his streak. Meadows was hitting just .192 when the streak began on May 23. Now he's up to .302 with a .554 slugging percentage. The 21-year-old missed most of April after suffering a fractured orbital bone at spring training. He's MLB.com's No. 16 overall prospect.

Pirates outfield prospect Austin Meadows underwent successful surgery to repair an orbital fracture in his right eye.

Meadows will be sidelined for the next 6-8 weeks. He sustained the injury while playing catch last week. The 20-year-old had a terrific showing in the minor leagues last year, slashing .310/.360/.420 with seven homers and 21 stolen bases between High-A and Double-A. He'll begin his season at Double-A Altoona once he's deemed ready to return.

Pirates prospect outfielder Austin Meadows will undergo surgery later this week or early next week to repair an orbital fracture.

One of the game's top position prospects, Meadows suffered the injury last Tuesday while playing catch. More should be known about a timeline after the surgery is completed. Meadows turns 21 in May and batted .310/.360/.420 with seven home runs, 55 RBI, and 21 stolen bases over 127 games between High-A and Double-A last year.

Pirates OF prospect Austin Meadows suffered an orbital fracture while playing catch on Tuesday.

Meadows is headed to Pittsburgh for more testing. It's a bad break for one of baseball's top prospects. Meadows was superb in the minor leagues last season, hitting .310 across 533 at-bats. The former first-round pick is looking at an extended absence.

Pirates OF prospect Austin Meadows belted a two-run homer in Saturday's Arizona Fall League Fall Stars Game.

It came in the sixth inning off Tigers RHP prospect Adam Ravenelle. The two-run blast was his only hit of the night. Meadows has struggled in the Fall League, hitting just .158 in 57 at-bats for the Glendale Desert Dogs. However, he's coming off an excellent season in the minor leagues. He finished third in the Florida State League in batting average before earning a promotion to Double-A Altoona in September. The 20 year old was the ninth overall pick in the 2013 MLB Draft.

Pirates OF prospect Austin Meadows collected three hits in Saturday's win for High-A Bradenton.

Meadows followed that up with two more hits in Sunday's victory. He's hit .409 with two homers and five RBI during his five-game hitting streak. The 20-year-old leads the Florida State League in hits (128) and total bases (173). He's also third in runs (64) and fourth in batting average (.306). Meadows is No. 28 on MLB.com's list of the top 100 prospects.

Pirates OF prospect Austin Meadows delivered four hits Saturday in a win for High-A Bradenton.

Meadows had been 6-for-42 over his previous 11 games. The former first-round pick is hitting .277 this year with two homers and 22 RBI. Meadows has already played more games than he did last season when hamstring injuries limited him to 164 at-bats.
