Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said Monday that prospect outfielder Austin Meadows will not play winter ball.
The 22-year-old Meadows was limited to just 81 games in the minors this season due to a torn hamstring and a strained oblique. He underwhelmed even when he was healthy enough to play, including a .250/.311/.359 batting line in Triple-A. With the idea of winter ball being scrapped, the Pirates want him to focus on getting ready for the start of the 2018 major league campaign. While his stock is down somewhat, Meadows could be on the fast track to Pittsburgh next year if he can stay healthy and show signs of tangible progress early on. Nov 7 - 9:41 AM

Pirates outfield prospect Austin Meadows was placed on the disabled list at Triple-A Indianapolis on Sunday due to a strained oblique.

He wasn't going to be called up this month, anyway, after missing so much time with a torn hamstring, but it's yet another injury to add to the list for Meadows. This is the second straight season that's ended early because of an oblique injury. Meadows hasn't reached 90 games played in either of the last two seasons and has hit only .239/.306/.390 at Indy during that time. The good news is he's still just 22, so he has time to right the ship.
Sep 3 - 11:27 AM

Pirates prospect Austin Meadows went 3-for-5 on Wednesday for Triple-A Indianapolis.

Two of the hits were doubles, and he scored two runs. It's been a disappointing year for Meadows, but the future is still bright, and he appears to be ending things on the right foot. You probably won't see him in the majors until 2018, but he has above-average tools across the board, so he's obviously fantasy relevant when he makes his debut.
Aug 24 - 1:02 PM

Pirates general manager Neal Huntington indicated Sunday that outfield prospect Austin Meadows is unlikely to make his major league debut this season.

Meadows' recovery from a torn hamstring has come along more slowly than expected, and all the missed time might have cost him a shot at a second-half promotion. The top prospect could play winter ball to make up for lost time. Meadows has batted .248/.313/.358 with four homers and 10 steals at Triple-A Indianapolis this season.
Aug 6 - 2:06 PM

Pirates prospect outfielder Austin Meadows is still rehabbing his right hamstring injury.

Meadows received a platelet rich plasma (PRP) injection for a right hamstring tear about a month ago. He was originally expected to miss up to four weeks, but the Pirates are taking things slow. "We’re still trying to get the leg healthy and then get him into a baseball progression," said Pirates general manager Neal Huntington. "He’s feeling good and has checked boxes so far." The 22-year-old was batting just .248/.313/.358 with four homers and 35 RBI through 64 games this season at the Triple-A level. Many speculated on a potential call-up after Starling Marte's PED suspension back in April, but odds are against him being a major contributor with the big club this season.
Jul 17 - 12:11 PM

Pirates prospect outfielder Austin Meadows is expected to miss up to four weeks after receiving a platelet rich plasma (PRP) injection last week for a right hamstring tear.

Meadows suffered the injury last week. It's the latest frustrating development for the 22-year-old, who has struggled to the tune of a .248/.313/.358 batting line with four homers and 35 RBI through 64 games this season in Triple-A. Meadows was mentioned as a possibility for a call-up after Starling Marte's PED suspension back in April, but the Pirates didn't think he was ready at the time. At this point, the priority should be getting him healthy to finish the year on a high note.
Jun 26 - 9:35 AM

Pirates prospect Austin Meadows tweaked his right hamstring Wednesday in a game at Triple-A Indianapolis.

He is scheduled to undergo an MRI and will likely spend a bit of time on the Triple-A disabled list. Meadows, the ninth overall pick in the 2013 MLB Draft, has batted just .248/.313/.358 with four home runs in 64 games this season for Indy.
Jun 22 - 10:12 AM

Pirates prospect Austin Meadows went 3-for-5 on Sunday for Triple-A Indianapolis.

One of the hits was a double, and Meadows also scored a run while driving in three for Indianapolis. It's been an uneven season at the plate for the 2013 first-round pick, but lately there's been more bad than good. If he can turn it on in the second-half of the 2017 season, he has a great chance of ending the year with the Pirates.
Jun 12 - 1:04 PM

Pirates prospect Austin Meadows went 3-for-4 on Sunday for Triple-A Indianapolis.

Two of the hits were doubles, and Meadows also scored a run. His triple-slash line of .260/.313/.370 may not look terribly impressive, but it is when you consider quite a few of these numbers started with one not too long ago. If he keeps hitting the way he did for most of May, he has a great chance of joining Pittsburgh this summer.
Jun 5 - 1:00 PM

Pirates prospect Austin Meadows went 1-for-5 on Sunday for Triple-A Indianapolis.

Meadows did end up scoring a run after the hit, but he also struck out twice. There is a golden opportunity for Meadows to reach the big leagues right now, but the results have been too poor to even think about calling him up at this point. All the talent is here, but Meadows needs to start hitting. Soon.
May 1 - 1:38 PM

Pirates GM Neal Huntington told reporters Tuesday that top outfield prospect Austin Meadows is not yet ready for the major leagues.

Meadows' path to the show opened wide on Tuesday when Starling Marte was hit with an 80-game PED suspension, but the Pirates aren't going to rush the 21-year-old. Meadows tore up the lower minors, but the 2013 first-rounder has batted just .202/.280/.417 through 186 plate appearances at the Triple-A level. Andrew McCutchen is moving back to center field for the Bucs and Jose Osuna has been called up to provide depth. We could see Meadows in May or June.
Apr 18 - 5:30 PM

Pirates top prospect Austin Meadows picked up two hits on Wednesday night for Triple-A Indianapolis.

If there's such thing as "needing" a two-hit game in the middle of April, Meadows would qualify. He came into the night 1-for-22, which is probably not going to get it done. Keep in mind that the 2013 first-rounder won't turn 22 for another month, and that the sample size of his struggles is extremely small. All that being said, it's nice to see some success for the talented outfielder. Here's hoping this is the start of a hot streak.
Apr 13 - 1:38 PM

Austin Meadows drilled a pinch-hit solo home run in a win over the Tigers on Saturday.

He was batting for Andrew McCutchen in the eighth inning when he took southpaw Kyle Ryan deep to provide the winning run. Meadows is batting .308 with two homers in 39 chances this spring. The 21-year-old top prospect is knocking on the door of the major leagues but it will likely take an injury or a trade involving one of the Pirates' stellar outfielders before he gets an opportunity.
Mar 25 - 6:32 PM

Austin Meadows homered off the Braves' Jaime Garcia in Tuesday's win.

All three Pirates starting outfielders are taking part in the WBC -- and likely will be for the duration of the tournament -- so Meadows is going to get a long look this spring. The top prospect will be a candidate to come up later this year if someone gets hurt or if Andrew McCutchen is traded.
Mar 7 - 4:46 PM

Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports relays that the Pirates plan on moving OF prospect Austin Meadows to a corner outfield spot at Triple-A Indianapolis.

Multiple reports have the Pirates searching for an Andrew McCutchen trade partner this offseason, with Passan writing that the team has "been the aggressors" and is not approaching the situation passively. The offshoot of this is some potential outfield tinkering. Should McCutchen be traded, Starling Marte would be moved to center, with Gregory Polanco patrolling left and (eventually) Meadows likely for right field.
