Hank Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle says the "chief candidates" to fill in at closer for the Giants are Sam Dyson and Hunter Strickland.
Mark Melancon was placed on the disabled list Thursday due to lingering complications with his surgically-repaired right forearm. He could be out a while. Dyson struggled down the stretch last season and was awful this spring in the Cactus League. Strickland, meanwhile, struck out eight batters over 7 1/3 scoreless innings in Arizona. Tony Watson could also be in the mix. Mar 29 - 3:20 PM

Sam Dyson was lit up again in Tuesday's Cactus League loss to the Royals, surrendering three runs on three hits in just 1/3 of an inning.

The right-hander also walked a batter, while the one out that he did record came via the strikeout. All of the damage was done via the long ball, with Whit Merrifield blasting a two-run homer and the light-hitting Alcides Escobar adding a solo shot. Dyson entered camp as the primary setup man in front of closer Mark Melancon, but with a 15.00 ERA in Cactus League play, manager Bruce Bochy may be forced to rethink that plan.

Sam Dyson was shelled for four earned runs over two-thirds of an inning Monday in a Cactus League appearance against the Athletics.

Dyson also struggled in his last Cactus League appearance on Friday and now owns a 12.27 ERA over four innings this spring. The 29-year-old right-hander would appear to be the Giants' fallback option at closer if Mark Melancon's arm can't get back to 100 percent, but the recent returns have not been encouraging. Tony Watson and Hunter Strickland could potentially jump into the mix.
Mar 12 - 6:30 PM

Sam Dyson gave up a solo homer to Dee Gordon in his one inning of work Friday against the Mariners.

Gordon led off the frame with a homer. Things could have gotten worse, as Dyson walked Nelson Cruz before giving up a double to Daniel Vogelbach, but he managed to escape further damage. Mark Melancon (forearm) is aiming to be ready for Opening Day, but Dyson is the natural fallback for the closer job if plans change. The 29-year-old notched 14 saves with San Francisco last season while posting a 4.03 ERA and 27/18 K/BB ratio in 38 innings.

Giants and RHP Sam Dyson avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year contract.

The financial particulars aren't available yet. Dyson was arbitration-eligible for the first time.

Sam Dyson took a blown save and a loss after allowing two runs in the ninth inning against the Padres on Saturday.

He gave up two singles followed by an Austin Hedges double that turned a 2-1 lead into a 3-2 defeat. He did managed to strike out two batters but that is small consolation for his fantasy owners and Giants fans. Dyson has been filling in at closer with Mark Melancon on the disabled list. He has a 6.09 ERA with 14 saves while splitting the season between the Rangers and Giants this year. He has only 34 strikeouts and a whopping 30 walks in 54 2/3 innings.

Sam Dyson surrendered three earned runs in the bottom of the ninth inning Wednesday as the Giants fell to the Diamondbacks.

San Francisco held a 3-1 lead when Dyson entered the game, but he gave up a leadoff homer to J.D. Martinez, singles to Jake Lamb and A.J. Pollock, an RBI fielder's choice to John Ryan Murphy, and then he ended the brutal outing with a walkoff walk to David Peralta. The 29-year-old right-hander will likely be relegated to a setup role in 2018 if Mark Melancon (forearm) can get himself back to full health.

Sam Dyson allowed just one hit in a scoreless ninth inning Saturday against the Dodgers while nailing down his 14th save.

The 2017 season started off like a bad dream for Dyson, as he couldn't seem to get an out or convert a save in Texas. He moved on to San Francisco and re-gained his form. He'll likely be a closer candidate in 2018, and if he pitches like he did in the NL he'll be a fantasy stud again.

Sam Dyson tossed a scoreless ninth inning against the Dodgers early Tuesday morning for his 13th save with the Giants.

Dyson threw just eight out of 17 pitches for strikes and worked around a two-out walk. He’s 13-for-14 in save chances with the Giants while posting a 3.31 ERA and 24/15 K/BB ratio over 32 2/3 innings. With Mark Melancon (elbow) officially headed for surgery, Dyson will hold down the closer role for the remainder of the season.

After entering a tie game in the ninth, Sam Dyson gave up five runs in one-third of an inning to take a loss to the Cardinals on Friday.

The Giants were up by three after six, but Hunter Strickland gave up two runs in the seventh and Mark Melancon allowed one in the eighth to take a blown save. That Melancon had the off night too probably helps Dyson, even if Melancon's wasn't nearly as brutal. Dyson is still 11-for-12 closing games for the Giants, and he came into this one having allowed three runs in 21 innings over the previous two months. He's probably going to get the Giants' next save chance.

Sam Dyson notched his 11th save with a scoreless ninth inning Monday against the Brewers.

Dyson issued a one-out walk to Domingo Santana, but he induced a double play grounder from Stephen Vogt to end the ballgame. Meanwhile, Mark Melancon threw a scoreless eighth inning and struck out two batters along the way. Dyson has been great in the closer role and the Giants are being careful with Melancon, so they might not change things down the stretch.

Sam Dyson recorded his 10th save of the season via a scoreless ninth inning in Thursday's win over the Phillies.

With the Giants holding a 5-4 advantage entering the ninth, Dyson recorded the first two outs without issue before losing a touch of command. He walked Andres Blanco and fell behind Cesar Hernandez before coming back to strike him out looking to end the contest. Dyson has been money with the Giants, especially of late -- he has not allowed a hit in any of his last four appearances. Since the Rangers traded him over to the National League, the reliever owns a 2.05 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 21/12 K/BB ratio in 26 1/3 frames. He is 10-for-11 in save chances since putting on the San Francisco uniform.

Sam Dyson earned his ninth save of the year on Sunday afternoon against the Nationals.

Dyson retired all three batters he faced in an easy 10-pitch ninth inning to protect the Giants' two-run lead. He has looked like a new man since arriving in San Francisco, though Mark Melancon is now off the disabled list and will eventually reclaim closer duties.

Sam Dyson fired off a clean ninth inning to pick up his eighth save of the season in Wednesday's win over the Cubs.

The Giants held a 3-1 lead entering the ninth inning and Dyson came on to keep the score right there. He needed just 10 pitches (six strikes) to record the save. After struggling to a terrifying 10.80 ERA in 17 appearances with the Rangers earlier in the season, Dyson has found new life with the Giants. Since joining the boys from the bay, the right-handed reliever is the owner of a 2.22 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 19/11 K/BB ratio in 23 appearances covering 24 1/3 innings. He is 8-for-9 in save opportunities since coming over in trade.

Sam Dyson allowed a walk while recording a strikeout in a scoreless ninth inning Tuesday against the Cubs for his seventh save.

Dyson was brutal to start the season in Texas, but that all appears to be a distant memory. He has converted seven of his eight save chances since coming over from the Rangers, and he has allowed just two earned runs over his past 18 2/3 innings across the past 16 appearances.
