Darin Ruf has been dealing with a sore hand at Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
That could be the determining factor as to why Michael Martinez was recalled rather than Ruf when Chase Utley (oblique) was placed on the DL. Through 42 games on the season, Ruf is batting .263/.341/.431 with five homers and 23 RBI at Triple-A. The 26-year-old figures to see some time in the majors later this year if healthy. Darin Ruf could be called up this weekend.

Ruf is batting .263/.341/.431 with five home runs and 23 RBI in 42 games this year at the Triple-A level. Those aren't spectacular numbers, but Chase Utley (rib cage) may be headed to the disabled list and the Phillies will need an extra bat for their interleague series early next week in Boston. Ruf is unlikely to be fantasy-relevant.

Phillies optioned 1B/OF Darin Ruf to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Ruf had a walkoff homer in Friday's win over the Braves, but it wasn't enough to keep him on the roster. The 26-year-old has some pop in his bat, but he's still adjusting to the outfield and is better off getting more work in the minor leagues. Meanwhile, it's safe to say that Domonic Brown has earned himself a full-time job in the outfield. His stock continues to rise in fantasy leagues.

Darin Ruf doubled twice in five at-bats against the Braves on Monday.

That's the good news. The bad is that he gave Freddie Freeman a homer in the second when Freeman's fly to left field bounced off his glove and over the fence. Ruf has a solid bat, but since his glove in the outfield leaves so much to be desired, it's still questionable whether the Phillies will carry him.
Mar 18 - 4:01 PM

Darin Ruf ripped his first home run of the spring Wednesday against the Yankees.

Ruf took David Aardsma deep for a solo shot in the sixth inning. Competing for a corner outfield spot, the 26-year-old has driven in seven runs this spring but is batting just .200.
Mar 13 - 9:29 PM

Darin Ruf left Sunday's game after being hit by a pitch on the left triceps.

Ruf iced the area after the game and said he feels fine. It sounds like he should be ready to play as soon as Monday.
Mar 10 - 2:47 PM

Darin Ruf hasn't played the field for a few days because he is nursing a sore right (throwing) arm.

Ruf has been doing far more outfield drills this spring than in years past, and his body is having to catch up. The 26-year-old slugger is hoping to get back in action on Thursday. He's likely to open the 2013 season as the starting left fielder at Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Darin Ruf hit his league-leading 11th home run of the Venezuelan Winter League Sunday.

Ruf has continued to mash after belting 38 homers at Double-A and three in 33 late-season at-bats for the Phillies. The Phils have also received positive reports on his defense in left field, though we're skeptical that he'll ever be even an average defender out there. But, there's no doubt that the bat is intriguing, and he could compete for a starting job in spring training.

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro said he's gotten good reports from the Venezuelan Winter League on Darin Ruf's defense in left field.

With Ryan Howard manning first base, Ruf will have to show he can play adequate defense in the outfield if he wants a starting job in Philly. The Phillies are giving him extra reps this winter in Venezuela, where he's also belted nine home runs in 20 games. "Yeah, baby, I love it," Amaro said of the reports on Ruf. "I hope that he’s challenging for a job in left field next year for the Fightins. (Phillies staffer) Jorge (Velandia) likes him and says he can play left field. We’ll get others to see him. We’re not giving him anything, but he’s certainly in the conversation."

Darin Ruf slugged a pair of solo home runs, accounting for all of the Phillies’ scoring in a losing effort against the Nationals on Tuesday.

The first homer was a towering drive to left field off Tom Gorzelanny in the fourth inning, then Ruf added another off Tyler Clippard in the eighth. The 26-year-old slugger has been impressive in his brief time with the Phillies, hitting .355/.364/.774 with three homers and nine RBI in only 31 at-bats. With the strong first impression, he may have a legitimate shot at landing a spot on the Opening Day roster next season.

Darin Ruf accounted for the only offense in Monday's win over the Nationals, tripling in a pair of runs.

Ruf's three-bagger in the second scored Carlos Ruiz and Domonic Brown, and it proved to be all Kyle Kendrick and the bullpen needed. The 26-year-old has put together a modest seven-game hitting streak since he's gotten a shot to play every day and is batting .333/.345/.593 in his 10 games with the Phils.

Darin Ruf is in the Phillies' starting lineup at first base Saturday.

Ryan Howard (toe) is out for the season, so Ruf will be the Phillies' first base for the final five games. He enters Saturday on a five-game hitting streak.

Darin Ruf smashed a three-run double, accounting for all of the Phillies’ offense in Thursday’s loss to the Nationals.

Ruf finished the night 2-for-4. The 26-year-old slugger has certainly made a strong impact through his first three starts. He’s hit safely in all three contests, going 5-for-11 (.455) with a homer and four RBI. He has another week’s worth of games to prove himself heading into the 2013 season, but he has certainly put himself on the radar already.

Darin Ruf hit the first home run of his career on Tuesday, powering the Phillies to a 6-3 defeat of the Nationals.

Ruf slugged 38 homers at the Triple-A level before getting called up by the Phillies earlier this month, and should get a chance to play regularly over the final week of the season. Whether or not he can make consistent contact at the MLB level remains to be seen, but the power is certainly real.

Darin Ruf will start in left field Tuesday against the Nationals.

This is his first start since being called up from Double-A Reading earlier this month. "Babe" Ruf has primarily played first base in the minors, but the Phillies are willing to experiment now that they are essentially out of the Wild Card race.
