Darin Ruf went 3-for-5 with a home run and six RBI as the Phillies doubled up the Mets 14-8 on Tuesday.
Ruf extended the Phillies' lead to 5-0 in the third inning with a three-run home run to left field off of Jon Niese. He added an RBI single in the fifth, and a two-run single in the sixth. The six RBI mark a career-high for Ruf, as he hadn't even knocked in four in a game before. The 1B/OF has otherwise not done much at the plate, batting .245/.292/.406 with seven home runs and 26 RBI in 209 plate appearances. Sep 1 - 10:57 PM

Darin Ruf hit his sixth homer Thursday off the Mets' Jon Niese.

That's the good news. However, he also struck out three times as part of a 1-for-6 night. The last strikeout ended the game and came on one of the very worst swings of 2015, as he took a half-cut at a slider that started about a foot out of the strike zone and ended up about two feet away from his bat. That'll leave a longer lasting impression than the homer.
Aug 27 - 11:48 PM

Darin Ruf went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run in Saturday's loss to the Braves.

Ruf took an Alex Wood offering out of the park in the fifth inning to pull the Phillies to within 9-4. Suffice it to say, the Phillies lost the game. Ruf was called up on June 24 to take Chase Utley's (ankle) spot on the active roster. Across 118 major league at-bats this season, he's hitting .229/.268/.390 with four homers and 14 RBI.
Jul 4 - 10:35 PM

Phillies recalled 1B/OF Darin Ruf from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

He's taking Chase Utley's (ankle) spot on the roster. Ruf has batted just .235/.279/.382 over 43 games with the big club this season. He should see some starts versus lefties.
Jun 24 - 12:14 PM

Phillies optioned 1B/OF Darin Ruf to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

The 28-year-old has struggled offensively, hitting just .235 with three homers. Domonic Brown was called up to take his roster spot.
Jun 13 - 7:45 PM

Darin Ruf pinch-hit in the ninth inning and delivered a walk-off RBI single to right field, sending the Phillies to a win over the Reds on Tuesday.

Odubel Herrera led off the inning with a double and was moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Carlos Ruiz. Manager Bryan Price opted to have lefty Tony Cingrani pitch to Ruf rather than walk him to face Ben Revere, and Ruf made him pay. He has not been much of a force at the plate this season, batting .225/.276/.393 with three home runs and 10 RBI, but even if he were, the Phillies' crowded outfield situation leaves him on the bench more often than not anyway.
Jun 2 - 10:33 PM

Darin Ruf went 2-for-3 with a walk and a solo home run as the Phillies completed a weekend sweep of the Diamondbacks on Sunday.

Ruf drilled a Josh Collmenter offering over the fence in left field to extend the Phillies' lead to 2-0 in the fourth inning. It's his third long ball of the year. Ruf entered the game with a .383 OPS against right-handed pitching, so the home run was rather unexpected. The 28-year-old doesn't have any fantasy value given his intermittent playing time and severe platoon split.
May 17 - 4:38 PM

Darin Ruf went 3-for-5 with a double and two runs scored in Monday's win over the Braves.

Ruf was in the lineup at first base, spelling Ryan Howard, as the left-handed Alex Wood started for the Braves. It was no surprise that Ruf performed well as he has a career .864 OPS against lefties. Ruf, batting .229/.296/.438 with two home runs and five RBI, has no use in traditional fantasy leagues, but can provide some value every now and then in DFS.
May 4 - 10:42 PM

Darin Ruf went 1-for-2 with a pinch-hit solo home run in a 10-inning loss to the Nationals on Sunday.

Ruf entered the afternoon hitless in 13 plate appearances to begin the season. He pinch-hit in the pitcher's spot in the bottom of the seventh inning, driving a no-doubt solo home run to left field off of Xavier Cedeno. Ruf excels against left-handed pitching but he's fighting for playing time in the outfield with fellow right-hander Jeff Francoeur and first base is currently occupied full-time by Ryan Howard, so Ruf carries no fantasy appeal whatsoever.
Apr 12 - 5:04 PM

Darin Ruf went 3-for-5 with a homer and a double as the Phillies topped the Braves 5-3 on Tuesday.

Ruf needed this after entering the day with a .189/.250/.297 line in 37 at-bats. Still, he might be Triple-A bound regardless. The Phillies aren't likely to platoon Ryan Howard when they still have hope of trading him, and there probably won't be much outfield time available for Ruf unless maybe Domonic Brown lands on the disabled list. It's too bad for Ruf that, even at age 28, he still has options left and thus can't force the Phillies' hand.
Mar 24 - 5:18 PM

Darin Ruf clubbed his third home run of the season in Tuesday's win against the Nationals.

Ruf, getting the start at first base against a left-handed starter, finished the night 2-for-3. Manager Ryne Sandberg has found it difficult to find Ruf playing time, especially at first base given Ryan Howard's presence, so his status is rather murky at this moment. In 64 plate appearances this season, he's slashing .250/.365/.481 with five RBI.

Darin Ruf is getting a second straight start at first base on Thursday afternoon against the Giants.

Ryan Howard will again take a seat. Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said Wednesday that he wants to see what Ruf can do with regular playing time, and there was a report from's Jim Salisbury that club officials are considering releasing Howard -- who's still owed over $60 million guaranteed -- after this season.

Phillies recalled OF Darin Ruf from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Ruf went 1-for-10 with four strikeouts in a short stint with the Phillies earlier this season. He'll act as depth at first base and both corner outfield spots.

Darin Ruf (wrist) returned to game action with the Gulf Coast League Phillies on Monday.

Ruf has been out of action since early June with a small fracture in his left wrist. He should return to Triple-A Lehigh Valley soon and be an option for the Phillies' bench when there's a need.
Wed, Jul 2, 2014 09:39:00 AM

Darin Ruf has been diagnosed with a small fracture in his left wrist.

The fracture is not a new injury -- he suffered it in a collision with the outfield wall June 3 at Triple-A Lehigh Valley -- but initial tests did not reveal it. Ruf also banged his knee and remains out indefinitely.
