Phillies optioned 1B/OF Darin Ruf to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Ruf has failed to produce as right-handed platoon mate at first base with Ryan Howard, batting an ugly .158/.206/.193. Tommy Joseph has taken his spot on the roster. May 13 - 3:05 PM

Darin Ruf had a double and a run scored in Saturday's win over the Indians.

The double was Ruf's first extra-base hit since April 17. It's been that kind of year for the 29-year-old, who's hitting just .206 with a .521 OPS to date. He's still without a homer after hitting 12 last season.

Manager Pete Mackanin said he's looking to shake up the Phillies' outfield.

"In the short term, if we don't show improvement, we'll probably make a change," said Mackanin. "We have to either get those guys going or do something." Mackanin started Darin Ruf in left field Saturday to give the team an "infusion on offense" though he's too much of a liability defensively to get regular playing time there. Veterans Will Venable and David Lough, who are both with Triple-A Lehigh Valley, could also be in the mix at some point. A decision on Venable will have to be made in the near future because his contract includes a May 1 opt-out clause.
Apr 16 - 11:47 PM

Darin Ruf has returned to the Phillies starting lineup for Saturday's game against Max Scherzer and the Nationals.

Not the optimum situation to return to, but it's encouraging to see him back in the fold after missing most of the week with a bruised left shoulder. Ruf is starting in left field and batting fifth.
Apr 16 - 2:50 PM

Darin Ruf (shoulder) appeared as a pinch hitter on Friday, flying out in his one at-bat in a losing effort against the Nationals.

Ruf had sat out the previous four games due to a bruised left shoulder. It seems safe to anticipate him back in the lineup in place of Ryan Howard the next time the club faces a left-hander.
Apr 16 - 8:09 AM

Darin Ruf (shoulder) is sitting again Thursday.

Ruf has been sidelined all week with a bruised left shoulder, but it's not believed to be a serious issue and the Phillies are still calling him day-to-day. Ryan Howard is starting at first base and batting fourth Thursday afternoon versus Padres lefty Drew Pomeranz.
Apr 14 - 10:25 AM

Darin Ruf (shoulder) is out again Wednesday.

Ruf has a contusion on his left shoulder and is considered day-to-day. Ryan Howard was going to start at first base either way against Padres right-hander Colin Rea.
Apr 13 - 3:30 PM

Darin Ruf has a contusion on his left shoulder.

Phillies manager Pete Mackanin said it's nothing serious, but Ruf did have to sit out Tuesday versus the Padres with Ryan Howard drawing the start against a left-hander. Ruf, 1-for-7 to open the season, is considered day-to-day.
Apr 12 - 10:21 PM

Darin Ruf is out of the Phillies' starting lineup Tuesday because of a sore left shoulder.

San Diego is throwing left-hander Robbie Erlin and Ruf is supposed to start against most left-handers this year. Instead left-handed hitter Ryan Howard will get the nod at first base and bat fourth for the host Phils.
Apr 12 - 4:08 PM

Phillies manager Pete Mackanin said after Friday's game that Darin Ruf will begin taking fly balls in left field on Saturday.

Mackanin had said previously that Ruf would no longer play the outfield, but the skipper has already grown frustrated with his poor offense. Ruf could provide a little boost against left-handed pitching but is a poor bet versus righties.
Apr 8 - 4:41 PM

David Ruf went 2-for-5 with three RBI to help the Phillies edge the Future Phillies 6-5 on Saturday.

It would have been embarrassing had the Phillies' regulars lost to the prospects. But it's also embarrassing that the Phillies' prospects lost to the regulars. Oh well. Ruf will open the year as a first baseman against left-handers. He's not expected to log any time in left field, so he'll only have significant fantasy value if Ryan Howard gets himself released at some point.
Apr 2 - 4:08 PM

Darin Ruf homered twice and knocked in three runs as a Phillies split-squad topped the Orioles 8-4 on Wednesday.

Ruf also walked. He has three homers the last two days. The Phillies seem to be planning on leaving him at first base on a full-time basis for now, even though they have more outfield at-bats available with Aaron Altherr down. It looks like Ruf will serve as a platoonmate for left-handed-hitting Ryan Howard.
Mar 9 - 4:10 PM

Darin Ruf hit a two-run homer off Pittsburgh's Jon Niese in Tuesday's game.

Ruf figures to be the Phillies' first baseman against left-handers over Ryan Howard, and he could also see some outfield time with Aaron Altherr down. He's finally out of options at age 29, so the Phillies will have to place him on waivers if they choose to send him down.
Mar 8 - 5:10 PM

Darin Ruf went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run and a strikeout in Thursday afternoon's win over the Mets.

Ruf's two-run shot off Mets starter Sean Gilmartin in the fourth inning represented almost the entirety of the offensive output in the well-pitched contest, at least until Andres Blanco socked a solo shot in the eighth inning. For his part, the 29-year-old Ruf is finishing out the season with a strong power surge and has homered in four of his last 10 games, adding to a .239/.296/.425 triple-slash. In addition to that batting line, he's whacked 12 homers and driven in 39 over the course of 259 at-bats.

Darin Ruf was 2-for-3 with a solo homer, a walk, and two runs scored in Friday's win over the Nationals.

Ruf has struggled all year against right-hander pitching, but he took Jordan Zimmermann deep in the fifth inning. He has 10 home runs on the year, but only three of them have come against right-handers.
