Darin Ruf is getting a second straight start at first base on Thursday afternoon against the Giants.
Ryan Howard will again take a seat. Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said Wednesday that he wants to see what Ruf can do with regular playing time, and there was a report from CSNPhilly.com's Jim Salisbury that club officials are considering releasing Howard -- who's still owed over $60 million guaranteed -- after this season. Ruf went 1-for-10 with four strikeouts in a short stint with the Phillies earlier this season. He'll act as depth at first base and both corner outfield spots.

Darin Ruf (wrist) returned to game action with the Gulf Coast League Phillies on Monday.

Ruf has been out of action since early June with a small fracture in his left wrist. He should return to Triple-A Lehigh Valley soon and be an option for the Phillies' bench when there's a need.
Jul 2 - 9:39 AM

Darin Ruf has been diagnosed with a small fracture in his left wrist.

The fracture is not a new injury -- he suffered it in a collision with the outfield wall June 3 at Triple-A Lehigh Valley -- but initial tests did not reveal it. Ruf also banged his knee and remains out indefinitely.
Jun 12 - 3:51 PM

Darin Ruf (wrist, knee) will remain shut down from baseball activities until sometime next week at the earliest.

Ruf still has some swelling and a lack of range of motion in his right knee as a result of a collision with the outfield wall on Tuesday. He'll be re-evaluated on Monday before the next step for him is determined.
Jun 6 - 4:27 PM

Darin Ruf has been placed on the Triple-A Lehigh Valley disabled list with a left wrist and right knee injury.

Ruf suffered the injuries when he slid into a wall while trying to chase down a foul ball. It's not clear at this point how long he'll be sidelined, but obviously he won't be an option for the Phillies for a while.
Jun 4 - 1:15 PM

Darin Ruf left Tuesday's game at Triple-A Lehigh Valley with a left wrist sprain and right knee laceration.

Ruf suffered the injury when he slid into a wall while trying to chase down a foul ball. It's not clear at this point how long he'll be sidelined, as he's likely to undergo further tests.
Jun 3 - 7:57 PM

Phillies optioned 1B/OF Darin Ruf to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Manager Ryne Sandberg was saying just a couple days ago that Ruf had a shot to play himself into a platoon at first base, but he's now back in the minors after receiving just 11 plate appearances. He should be back later this season.
Jun 1 - 10:18 AM

Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg indicated Tuesday that Darin Ruf could play his way into a platoon at first base with Ryan Howard.

"Yeah, if it happens to work," Sandberg said of a platoon. "It's an opportunity to have a lineup like that and if it produces that becomes an opportunity and possibility going forward, just to possibly to get some consistency with the offense against right-handed and left-handed pitching." Howard is hitting just .182 against left-handers over the last three seasons, so finding a platoon mate for him would be wise. Ruf started against left Jorge De La Rosa on Tuesday and hit a solo homer.
May 28 - 10:02 AM

Phillies recalled 1B/OF Darin Ruf from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Ruf began the season on the disabled list with an oblique strain and was eventually optioned to Lehigh Valley last week after completing a rehab assignment. He's hit .261/.314/.391 with one homer in 12 minor league games this season and will give the Phils an option at first base and the corner outfield spots against left-handed pitching.
May 21 - 10:49 AM

Phillies activated OF Darin Ruf from the 15-day disabled list; optioned him to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Ruf is healed from his spring oblique strain, but the Phillies want him to get more at-bats against minor league competition. The 27-year-old is 2-for-10 in three games since joining Lehigh Valley earlier this week.
May 15 - 2:07 PM

Darin Ruf (oblique) has shifted his minor league rehab assignment to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Ruf was 3-for-12 with two RBI in three rehab games at High-A Clearwater. He is fully recovered from his left oblique strain and the Philly bench could use a boost, so the .257/.348/.489 career hitter might be activated soon.
May 12 - 9:36 AM

Darin Ruf (oblique) will begin a minor league rehab assignment Thursday with High-A Clearwater.

Ruf strained his left oblique near the end of spring training. The 27-year-old should be ready to return from the disabled list in about a week, but the Phillies might not add him to their major league roster right away.
May 7 - 4:58 PM

Darin Ruf (oblique) is expected to begin a rehab assignment in the next few days.

Ruf suffered a strained left oblique toward the end of spring training but has played in extended spring games lately with no issues. He should be ready for activation around mid-May but isn't guaranteed a spot on the major league roster.
Apr 30 - 9:16 AM

The Phillies are hopeful that Darin Ruf (oblique) will begin baseball activities early next week.

Ruf landed on the disabled list after suffering a strained left oblique toward the end of spring training. He was originally expected to miss 4-6 weeks, so he could be an option for the Phillies around the end of the month.
