Cubs optioned LHP Brooks Raley, RHPs Trey McNutt and Alberto Cabrera and INF/OF Logan Watkins to Triple-A Iowa and RHP Robert Whitenack to Double-A Tennessee.
They also reassigned righty Nick Struck to minor league camp. Of the entire group, Cabrera probably had the best shot to make the team, but he really struggled this spring, allowing 12 runs over 6 2/3 frames. He'll be up with the big club at some point, though. Mar 11 - 11:46 AM

Raley was lit up in his stint with the Cubs this season. He'll almost surely start 2013 at Triple-A.

Likely making his final start of the season, Brooks Raley gave up seven runs in four innings versus the Brewers on Thursday.

Raley is expected to be shut down for the remainder of the year. The 24-year-old allowed 22 earned runs in 24 1/3 innings over the course of five starts for the Cubs. He'll likely open next year back in Triple-A.

The Cubs will shut down Brooks Raley after his start Thursday against the Brewers.

Raley is on an innings limit, so this will likely be his last appearance this season. Chris Rusin is expected to replace him in the Cubs' starting rotation.

Cubs recalled LHP Brooks Raley from Triple-A Iowa.

Raley will serve as the Cubs' fifth starter following the demotion of Chris Rusin. He picked up his first major league win in last Saturday's doubleheader, but has struggled in three spot starts this season.

Cubs recalled LHP Brooks Raley from Triple-A Iowa.

Cubs optioned LHP Brooks Raley to Triple-A Iowa.

He was sent down to make room for Michael Bowden on the active roster. Raley was shaky in his first two major league starts, allowing 10 runs on 13 hits (three home runs) and four walks in 10 innings. He could possibly return to start in Saturday's doubleheader against the Reds, but he shouldn't be trusted in fantasy leagues.

Making just his second career start, Brooks Raley allowed three runs on five hits in six innings of Sunday's loss to the Reds at Wrigley Field.

Raley struck out two and walked one, and allowed home runs to Ryan Ludwick and Jay Bruce. It was a marked improvement on his big-league debut, where he allowed seven runs in just four innings against the Padres on Tuesday. Raley should get the Reds against next Saturday, where the teams will play a day/night doubleheader in Cincinnati.

Brooks Raley didn't look like he belonged in the majors Tuesday, allowing seven runs on eight hits and three walks in just four innings.

It was a nightmare big league debut for Raley. Promoted earlier in the day, he was absolutely blasted in what should have been the cushiest assignment in baseball -- an evening at PETCO. The 24-year-old posted a 3.58 ERA and 98/40 K/BB ratio in 130 2/3 innings this season between Double- and Triple-A. Respectable numbers, but one would suspect he'll head back to the farm after this stinker.

Cubs purchased the contract of LHP Brooks Raley from Triple-A Iowa.

Raley will get the start Tuesday in place of the injured Matt Garza (elbow). The 24-year-old has put up a 3.58 ERA and 98/40 K/BB ratio in 130 2/3 innings this season between Double- and Triple-A. Raley will get a chance to stick around for a while but can be ignored for fantasy purposes.

The Cubs will promote left-hander Brooks Raley to start Tuesday against the Padres.

Raley, 24, has a 3.58 ERA and 98/40 K/BB ratio in 130 2/3 innings this season between Double-A Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa. Baseball America didn't include him among the Cubs' top 30 prospects during the offseason. He shouldn't be trusted in fantasy leagues right out of the gate.
