Padres optioned LHP Tom Layne to Triple-A Tucson.

The move, coupled with Kyle Blanks also being optioned to Triple-A, drops the Padres down to their requisite 25-man roster for Opening Day. The 28-year-old lefty struggled mightily this spring, posting a 9.90 ERA, 2.30 WHIP over his 10 innings of work. He's likely to see time with the Padres bullpen at some point in 2013. Tom Layne - R - Padres

Tom Layne registered his first career save with a perfect inning in Wednesday's win over the Pirates.

Layne got a groundout and a flyout before getting Pedro Alvarez looking to end the game. Dale Thayer had pitched in two straight games and blew a save Tuesday, but it's not clear if he was unavailable or if manager Bud Black just wanted to change things up. Layne, 27, has allowed just two baserunners and no runs while striking out eight in his first 4 1/3 big league innings.

Tom Layne - R - Padres

Padres purchased the contract of LHP Tom Layne from Double-A San Antonio.

He'll take the roster spot of Alex Hinshaw, who was designated for assignment. Layne, 27, had a 3.28 ERA and 36/16 K/BB ratio over 35 2/3 innings with Double-A San Antonio this season and figures to pitch in middle relief.

The Padres were expecting Quentin to miss just one game after he aggravated his chronic knee injury on an awkward slide Monday. They changed their minds, though, deciding to give him the injection in hopes that he'll be ready on Friday after Thursday's off day. Jesus Guzman is playing left field Wednesday. May 22

	2	Clayton Richard D.L. Clayton Richard (illness) gave up two runs in six innings Tuesday in his second minor league rehab start with Triple-A Tucson. Richard, out since May 4 with an intestinal virus, gave up five hits and no walks while striking out four. The southpaw threw 65 out of 94 pitches for strikes. It should be enough for the Padres to activate him from the disabled list. May 22

	7	Cory Luebke D.L. Cory Luebke (elbow) has had his throwing program stopped for the second time this year in his attempt to return from Tommy John surgery. Luebke was shut down in early March before resuming sessions of catch on April 1, and he had progressed to throwing off a mound before this latest setback. Obviously none of this bodes well for his mission to return to live major league games by the All-Star break. May 18
	8	Joe Wieland D.L. Joe Wieland (elbow) threw a bullpen session Friday at the Padres' spring training complex. Wieland, currently on the 60-day disabled list, is nine months removed from Tommy John surgery and will continued to be moved along slowly. If he can avoid setbacks, Wieland should be game-ready sometime after the All-Star break. Apr 27
