Red Sox reassigned LHP Tommy Layne, RHP Brayan Villarreal, OF Corey Brown and INF Mike McCoy to minor league camp.
The Sox had already pretty much decided on their bullpen, so none of these cuts are a surprise. Both Layne and Villarreal have a chance to contribute at some point this season. Mar 29 - 12:26 PM

Red Sox signed LHP Tommy Layne to a minor league contract.

He seems likely to receive an invitation to spring training. Layne spent most of 2013 at Triple-A with the Padres, but he put up a 2.84 ERA with 31 strikeouts over 25 1/3 innings the last two seasons at the big league level. He'll likely wind up as depth in the minors.

The move, coupled with Kyle Blanks also being optioned to Triple-A, drops the Padres down to their requisite 25-man roster for Opening Day. Dale Thayer had pitched in two straight games and blew a save Tuesday, but it's not clear if he was unavailable or if manager Bud Black just wanted to change things up. Layne, 27, has allowed just two baserunners and no runs while striking out eight in his first 4 1/3 big league innings.
