Athletics designated LHP Andrew Werner for assignment.

The move clears a spot for the newly-signed Scott Kazmir on the 40-man roster. Werner, who was acquired from the Padres in the Tyson Ross deal, posted an ugly 5.78 ERA over 26 starts and one relief appearance in Triple-A this year.

Athletics optioned LHP Andrew Werner and RHP Jesse Chavez to Triple-A Sacramento.

Werner was acquired in the Tyson Ross deal this offseason, but was considered a long shot for a bullpen spot. Chavez is merely organizational depth.

Athletics acquired LHP Andrew Werner from the Padres in the Tyson Ross deal.

Werner has put up some nice numbers in the minors but is a soft-tossing lefty that posted a 5.58 ERA over eight starts for the Padres in 2012. He'll likely begin 2013 as a long reliever or as a starter back at Triple-A.

Making what was likely his final start of the season, Andrew Werner allowed three runs on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings of Friday's loss to the Giants.

Werner struck out two and walked one. A rookie lefty just four months shy of his 26th birthday, Werner posted a 4.78 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 33/13 K/BB ratio across 37 1/3 innings in his first MLB go-round. The owner of pedestrian minor-league numbers and a fastball that sits in the high-80s, Werner will likely be far away from the Padres' 25-man roster next Opening Day.

Andrew Werner gave up five runs and two homers in five innings Sunday in a no-decision versus the Rockies.

Werner had turned in four straight quality starts for the Padres, but a pair of homers -- one from opposing starter Alex White -- did him in at Petco today. NL-only leaguers should be able to do better than starting him on the road in San Francisco next weekend.

Andrew Werner took a tough no-decision Monday, as he held the Dodgers to just two runs on five hits and a walk over six innings.

He also struck out a career-high eight and was in line for his second win in three starts before a Luke Gregerson blown save. Werner has now allowed two runs over six innings in each of his first three major league starts and has struck out 15 over the last two times out. We doubt it will continue, but he's worth playing in NL-only formats for now.

Andrew Werner turned in his second straight quality start to open his MLB career, allowing two runs on four hits over six innings in Tuesday's loss to the Braves.

Werner racked up a career-high seven strikeouts without issuing a free pass. Chipper Jones got the Braves on the board with an RBI double in the first inning, then Den Uggla belted a solo homer in the fifth, but that was the extent of the damage against him. He'll take a solid 1-1 record, 3.00 ERA and 9/4 K/BB ratio into Monday's start against the Dodgers in Los Angeles.

Andrew Werner was a winner in his major league debut Wednesday, holding the Pirates to two runs on four hits and four walks over six innings in the 4-2 victory.

Werner struck out just two and allowed a home run. He also threw just 47 of 82 pitches for strikes, but the Pirates were unable to square him up for the most part. The 25-year-old will pitch at home again in his next start, but he'll have a stiffer test with the Braves coming to town.

Padres recalled LHP Andrew Werner from Triple-A Tucson.

Werner is scheduled to make his major league debut Wednesday against the Pirates. The 25-year-old southpaw posted a solid 3.70 ERA and 109/31 K/BB ratio over 22 starts this season between Double- and Triple-A. We would wait and see before trusting him in fantasy leagues.

The Padres will call up Andrew Werner from Triple-A Tucson to start Wednesday against the Pirates.

He's taking the rotation spot Ross Ohlendorf. Werner, who will be making his major league debut, holds a 3.70 ERA over 22 starts between Double- and Triple-A. He's a strike-thrower whose fastball sits in the high-80s and is someone that can be avoided in fantasy.
