Rafael Ortega is starting in left field and batting second for the Angels for the second straight day on Sunday.
It appears that Ortega will slide right into the role vacated by Daniel Nava (knee) as the left fielder and No. 2 hitter versus right-handers. The 24-year-old stole a base on Saturday and his speed could give him some fantasy value over the next couple weeks while Nava is out. Apr 17 - 11:38 AM

Angels recalled OF Rafael Ortega from Triple-A Salt Lake.

With the Angels struggling on offense, they'll see if Ortega can provide a jolt. The 24-year-old outfielder was hitting .348/.360/.652 with one homer and seven RBI through six games at Salt Lake. Ortega is starting in left field and batting second on Saturday.

Angels optioned OF Rafael Ortega to Triple-A Salt Lake.

Ortega held his own this spring with a .320 average across 50 Cactus League at-bats. He also showed some speed on the base paths with three steals. The 24-year-old will bide his time in Salt Lake until a spot opens up in the Angels' outfield.

Rafael Ortega went 2-for-3 with a double, triple, three RBI and two runs scored Saturday against the Brewers.

Ortega entered the game as a pinch-runner after Daniel Nava was hit by a Wily Peralta pitch, but he certainly made his mark. The outfielder had an RBI triple in the third inning before adding a two-run double in the seventh. Ortega is batting .281 with a .793 OPS and seven RBI in his bid to make the club, and without a ton of other, better options -- Nava could be a starter on Opening Day -- the 24-year-old could elbow his way into some playing time if he performs well.

Angels signed OF Rafael Ortega to a one-year contract.

Ortega, 24, had a brief cup of coffee back in 2012 with the Rockies but has spent the last three seasons in Double- and Triple-A, most recently batting .286/.367/.378 at Triple-A for the Cardinals. He'll compete for a reserve outfielder spot.

Rafael Ortega hit a pair of homers and drove in four runs Friday against the Mets.

The 23-year-old Ortega was a member of the Cardinals' 40-man roster last year until being designated for assignment and clearing waivers in September. He's really more of a speedster than a power guy; he finished with seven homers and 19 steals in a 2014 season spent mostly in Double-A. He has three 30-steal seasons to his credit in the minors, but he's never topped nine homers.

Cardinals sent OF Rafael Ortega outright to Triple-A Memphis.

Ortega was designated for assignment on Monday to make room on the 40-man roster. He will remain with the organization as minor league depth.

Cardinals claimed OF Rafael Ortega off waivers from the Rangers.

Ortega batted just .228/.315/.297 in 2013 at Double-A, but he has good speed and is only 22 years old. The Cardinals will hope he blossoms in their farm system.

Rangers designated OF Rafael Ortega for assignment.

Ortega had a brutal .228/.315/.297 batting line in 178 plate appearances this past season at the Triple-A level, but he's 22 years old so he may draw interest on waivers. Ortega does have 156 minor league stolen bases.

Rangers claimed OF Rafael Ortega off waivers from the Rockies.

Ortega, 22, battled injuries this past season while batting just .228/.315/.297 with one home run and 10 RBI over 178 plate appearances in Double-A. The Rangers are obviously hopeful that he can get his career back on track after a lost year.

Rockies purchased the contract OF Rafael Ortega from High-A Modesto.

Ortega, 21, will be given an extended look over the final three games. The Rockies transferred Jonathan Sanchez to the 60-day disabled list to off-set their 40-man roster.
