Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports the Angels are trying to bring back Rafael Ortega on a minor league deal.
Ortega was pushed off the Angels' 40-man roster in mid-October, but there's mutual interest in working something out for 2017. It would not come with a guaranteed roster spot, but he'd likely play a role at the big league level at some point in Anaheim next summer if this deal gets worked out. Dec 1 - 3:15 PM

Date:

Rafael Ortega has elected free agency.

He refused his assignment to Triple-A Salt Lake after being DFA'd on Friday. Ortega hit .232 with one homer, 16 RBI and eight steals while seeing time at all three outfield positions this year. It shouldn't take the 25-year-old long to resurface.
Nov 19 - 11:28 PM

Angels sent OF Rafael Ortega outright to Triple-A Salt Lake.

Ortega was removed from the 40-man roster a week ago but has cleared waivers. He batted only .232/.283/.292 for the Halos this season.
Nov 18 - 8:18 AM

Angels designated OF Rafael Ortega for assignment.

The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for Jesse Chavez who was signed to a free agent contract on Friday. The 25-year-old outfielder appeared in 66 games for the Angels in 2016, slashing .232/.283/.292 with one homer, 16 RBI and a 23/13 K/BB ratio in 201 plate appearances. He could generate some interest on waivers.
Nov 11 - 7:58 PM

Angels recalled OF Rafael Ortega from Triple-A Salt Lake.

Ortega, 25, has batted .238/.273/.303 in 36 games with the Angels this season. He'll function as a reserve outfielder down the stretch.
Aug 29 - 5:19 PM

Angels optioned OF Rafael Ortega to Triple-A Salt Lake.

Ortega started off hot but has hit just .217 since May 1 with only one homer and seven RBI. The 25-year-old should get another chance with the Angels later this year.
Jun 11 - 6:49 PM

Rafael Ortega went 0-for-3 in the loss to the Tigers on Wednesday.

Ortega has gotten 101 at-bats for the Angels this season and is hitting .238/.274/.297 with three steals in six attempts. Ideally, he'd be in Triple-A, but the same could be said for half the guys the Angels are running out there right now.
Jun 1 - 10:48 PM

Angels recalled OF Rafael Ortega from Triple-A Salt Lake.

Ortega hit .294/.345/.294 with four RBI and two stolen bases in 56 plate appearances earlier this season with Anaheim. He will operate as outfield depth while Daniel Nava recovers from a left groin strain. Shane Robinson is starting in left field on Tuesday night.
May 17 - 7:03 PM

Angels optioned OF Rafael Ortega to Triple-A Salt Lake.

The 24-year-old got an opportunity to play with Daniel Nava on the disabled list, and responded well hitting .294/345/.294 with four RBI and two stolen bases in 56 plate appearances. He should get another opportunity with the big league club the next time injury strikes.
May 6 - 9:20 PM

Rafael Ortega went 2-for-4 with an RBI single and two runs scored against the Brewers on Tuesday.

Ortega contributed an RBI single in the third inning, later coming around to score on a Mike Trout single. A low-key signing by the Angels this past winter, the 24-year-old is now hitting .304/.360/.304 in 13 games. More importantly, he continues to bat second ahead of Trout, a great place to be for guys who like to score runs.
May 4 - 12:16 AM

Rafael Ortega is starting in left field and batting second for the Angels for the second straight day on Sunday.

It appears that Ortega will slide right into the role vacated by Daniel Nava (knee) as the left fielder and No. 2 hitter versus right-handers. The 24-year-old stole a base on Saturday and his speed could give him some fantasy value over the next couple weeks while Nava is out.
Apr 17 - 11:38 AM

Angels recalled OF Rafael Ortega from Triple-A Salt Lake.

With the Angels struggling on offense, they'll see if Ortega can provide a jolt. The 24-year-old outfielder was hitting .348/.360/.652 with one homer and seven RBI through six games at Salt Lake. Ortega is starting in left field and batting second on Saturday.
Apr 16 - 11:13 AM

Angels optioned OF Rafael Ortega to Triple-A Salt Lake.

Ortega held his own this spring with a .320 average across 50 Cactus League at-bats. He also showed some speed on the base paths with three steals. The 24-year-old will bide his time in Salt Lake until a spot opens up in the Angels' outfield.
Apr 2 - 6:18 PM

Rafael Ortega went 2-for-3 with a double, triple, three RBI and two runs scored Saturday against the Brewers.

Ortega entered the game as a pinch-runner after Daniel Nava was hit by a Wily Peralta pitch, but he certainly made his mark. The outfielder had an RBI triple in the third inning before adding a two-run double in the seventh. Ortega is batting .281 with a .793 OPS and seven RBI in his bid to make the club, and without a ton of other, better options -- Nava could be a starter on Opening Day -- the 24-year-old could elbow his way into some playing time if he performs well.
Mar 19 - 8:28 PM

Angels signed OF Rafael Ortega to a one-year contract.

Ortega, 24, had a brief cup of coffee back in 2012 with the Rockies but has spent the last three seasons in Double- and Triple-A, most recently batting .286/.367/.378 at Triple-A for the Cardinals. He'll compete for a reserve outfielder spot.
