He’ll likely move up to Double-A Northwest Arkansas after a series of rehab starts at lower levels.

Royals pitching prospect Sean Manaea (abdomen) remains in extended spring training but is expected to be assigned to the minor leagues before the end of May.

Royals pitching prospect Sean Manaea (abdomen) is hoping to resume throwing from a mound sometime next week.

Manaea has been plagued by an abdominal strain this spring and just started throwing long toss again this week. "It has been frustrating," Manaea said. "But the main thing now is to get better, take it slow and not hurt it worse." Manaea, who is likely to begin the season at Double-A, might not be game-ready until early April.
Mar 12 - 6:59 PM

Royals prospect LHP Sean Manaea struck out nine batters over 5 1/3 innings on Tuesday, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks for High-A Wilmington.

Manaea has been on cruise control over his last eight starts, posting a 1.53 ERA, .176 BAA (.481 OPS), and 51-22 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 47 innings. The left-hander hasn’t allowed more than five hits in a game during that span, and Tuesday’s outing also marked the first time he’s allowed more than two runs since June 26. Manaea should begin 2015 at Double-A Northwest Arkansas and, if all goes according to plan, join the Royals’ starting rotation later in the season.

Royals prospect lefty Sean Manaea struck out seven batters over seven shutout innings, scattering two hits, one walk, and two hit batsman for High-A Wilmington on Wednesday.

Over his last seven starts Manaea has held opposing batters to a .164/.274/.193 line while putting up a 9.1 K/9. There was an argument that Manaea was the top college pitcher in the 2013 draft, but a hip issue caused him to drop to the 34th overall pick. Clearly, the Royals are ecstatic that he fell to them and are reaping the benefits. Manaea has the potential to be a solid No. 2 pitcher, and should see time in Kansas City before the end of 2015.

Royals left-handed pitching prospect Sean Manaea scattered four hits and one walk over 7 1/3 shutout innings, striking out seven batters for High-A Wilmington on Saturday.

Manaea has pitched well over his last four starts, holding opposing batters to a .167/.286/.205 line while striking out 23 batters over 24 innings. Manaea has the potential to be a frontline starter, primarily relying on a low-90s fastball and a nasty slider. Manaea is likely to start 2015 with Double-A Northwest Arkansas, and could be in the City of Fountains before the end of 2015.

Royals left-handed pitching prospect Sean Manaea fanned eight on Monday, tossing five innings and allowing four hits, one walk, and one run.

Manaea rebounded after a poor start to dominate the same squad that hit him hard last week. Manaea used his low-90s fastball and his biting slider to pick up a solid outing despite wet conditions, including hitting 97 in the first inning. Manaea profiles as a solid #2 pitcher, and his falling to the 34th overall pick could turn into a coup for the Royals.

Royals prospect LHP Sean Manaea was rocked in his start Sunday, allowing seven earned runs on seven hits (two home runs) in two innings for High-A Wilmington.

Manaea, 22, was the Royals' second-round draft pick last June, but he was held out of action after undergoing hip surgery earlier in the month. The left-hander looked sharp during his first two starts as a professional, but that obviously wasn't the case Sunday as he struggled to complete two innings. Overall, Manaea owns an 8.71 ERA and 13/2 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 10 1/3 innings. If he can show improved command and build arm strength during the first half of the season, Manaea should finish his campaign at Double-A and reach the major leagues at some point the following year.

Royals prospect LHP Sean Manaea had a shaky professional debut on Tuesday, allowing four runs (three earned) on three hits with five strikeouts and a walk in 3 1/3 innings for High-A Wilmington.

The 22-year-old's outing was his first since signing with the Royals, as he was held out of action last summer after undergoing hip surgery in June. The fact that the organization assigned him directly to High-A Wilmington is a testament to his overall potential and ability to move quickly through their system.

Royals prospect Sean Manaea pitched on Tuesday for the first time since undergoing hip surgery in June.

The Royals selected the Indiana State left-hander with the first pick in the competitive balance round and 34th overall selection in June's draft. Kansas City paid out a $3.55 million bonus -- a record for a supplemental round selection -- to persuade Manaea to skip his senior season. Manaea will likely begin next season at Lo-A Lexington or Hi-A Wilmington. "As long as everything is (healthy)," Royals general manager Dayton Moore said. "We may keep him here until May or even June. I don't know. We've just got to wait and see as we get closer."

Royals agreed to terms with competitive balance pick LHP Sean Manaea.

Baseball America's Jim Callis reports that Manaea will receive $3.55 million, which is a record for a supplemental round selection. The reason Manaea slid, of course, is due to concerns about the health of his hip, which he was have surgery on to repair a torn labrum. He'll be ready to pitch next spring, though, and the Royals are convinced it won't be a long-term issue. Manaea has the upside of a top-flight starter and should move fast if he's able to stay healthy.

Royals selected Indiana St. left-hander Sean Manaea with the first pick in the competitive balance round and 34th overall selection in the draft.

Well, it looks like the Royals' strategy worked; go cheap with the eighth overall pick and then take maybe the draft's most difficult sign 34th overall. Manaea projected as a top-five pick before questions about his health arose this spring. He was 5-4 with a 1.47 ERA and a 93/27 K/BB ratio in 73 1/3 innings for Indiana State this year, but his season ended early amid worry about his shoulder and hip. If the Royals can get him signed and keep him healthy, he might be a top-of-the-rotation guy for them in two or three years.
