Sean Manaea (shoulder) is likely to have his next start pushed back.
It doesn't appear as though Manaea will be heading to the disabled list due to his shoulder tightness, but it doesn't look as though he'll be ready to take the ball on Tuesday. In that case, Sonny Gray would start on Tuesday with Kendall Graveman pitching on Wednesday for the A's. Apr 28 - 6:51 PM

Date:

Sean Manaea (shoulder) will play catch on Friday.

Manaea left Wednesday's start due to shoulder tightness but he's hoping he won't have to miss any time. The A's have an off day on Monday, which would allow them to skip Manaea's turn if he isn't ready by Tuesday. The left-hander holds an underwhelming 5.18 ERA over five starts this year.

Sean Manaea (shoulder) hopes to resume throwing on Friday.

Manaea left Wednesday's start due to shoulder tightness but seems to think he'll be able to make his next start. The left-hander's velocity was way down on Wednesday night, with most of his pitches sitting in the 86-88 mph range. His next turn in the rotation is scheduled for Tuesday against the Twins.
Apr 27 - 7:54 PM

Sean Manaea (shoulder) said it's possible he could make his next scheduled start.

Manaea was lifted from Wednesday's game against the Angels after experiencing shoulder tightness, but he's dealt with a similar issue in the past and it went away in a couple of days. There are no tests planned currently. We should know more once it comes time for him to throw his between-starts bullpen session. The young left-hander is currently lined up to face the Twins on the road next Tuesday.
Apr 27 - 9:05 AM

Sean Manaea left Wednesday's start against the Angels with left shoulder tightness.

Manaea's fastball usually sits in the 93-95 mph range, but Wednesday he topped out at 90 mph while mostly throwing in the mid to high 80s. It was clear Manaea didn't have it tonight and he was eventually pulled after allowing four hits and three earned runs in only two innings of work. We'll let you know as soon as the A's update his status.
Apr 27 - 12:02 AM

Sean Manaea limited the Mariners to one run over six innings and struck out six in a victory Friday.

It's Manaea's first win in four starts this year. He's up to 12 walks in 22 1/3 innings, which isn't exactly ideal. However, he's struck out 26. He'll get the Angels next time out.
Apr 22 - 1:23 AM

Sean Manaea had an unusual stat line in his start against the Astros on Saturday, allowing two runs -- one earned -- without yielding a hit over five innings in a no-decision.

Manaea was unhittable, but he didn't seem to know where the ball was going, either, walking five while striking out six. He left with a comfortable lead but watched as his bullpen -- asked to cover the final four innings after he needed 98 pitches to get through five -- melted down, saddling him with a no-decision. The southpaw remains 0-1 with a 5.51 ERA through three starts. He'll keep searching for his first win Thursday against the Mariners.
Apr 15 - 10:39 PM

Sean Manaea was unable to parlay 10 strikeouts into a win over the Rangers on Sunday, surrendering four runs on three hits over 5 1/3 innings.

Manaea was brilliant in places while racking up his 10 whiffs -- he did not hit double-digit strikeouts in any of his 24 starts last season -- but one mistake largely did him in. That came with two outs in the second inning, when he served up a three-run home run to Joey Gallo. The 25-year-old southpaw should hold value in AL-only leagues as a back-of-the-rotation arm this season. He will try to build on Sunday's 10-strikeout performance in a home start against the Astros next time out.
Apr 9 - 6:34 PM

Sean Manaea gave up four runs in six innings Tuesday against the A's in his season debut.

A one-out walk and four singles added up to three runs against Manaea in the second inning. He bounced back nicely from there, retiring the side in order in the third, fourth and sixth innings. Still, it was a mediocre first start on the whole. He'll get the Rangers in Arlington on Sunday.
Apr 5 - 1:52 AM

Sean Manaea struggled mightily in Saturday's split-squad Cactus League game against the Reds, allowing six runs (five earned) on five hits over three innings.

All six of those runs came home to roost in the second inning. Manaea walked five and struck out just one in the disappointing spring showing. These results will not budge him out of the rotation, though, as he posted a solid 3.86 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 124/37 K/BB ratio across 144 2/3 frames during the 2016 campaign.
Mar 25 - 8:51 PM

Sean Manaea worked around seven hits to deliver 3 2/3 scoreless innings Tuesday in his Cactus League start against the Rockies.

All seven of those hits were singles. Manaea walked a tightrope for much of his outing, but the Rockies couldn't manage to get on the board. He is locked into a spot in the A's rotation for 2017 after registering a strong 3.86 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, and 124/37 K/BB ratio in 144 2/3 innings last season. The talented left-hander turned 25 years old last month.
Mar 14 - 5:39 PM

Sean Manaea gave up one run on three hits in his 3 2/3-inning start as the Athletics beat the Reds 12-5 on Thursday.

A home run by Adam Duvall accounted for the only run. Manaea fanned three while walking one. He needed a good start today after having given up four runs in his first 3 2/3 innings this spring. He has a rotation spot locked down by virtue of his 3.86 ERA in 144 2/3 innings last year.
Mar 9 - 6:58 PM

Sean Manaea was batted about in Saturday's Cactus League loss to the Indians, yielding five runs (four earned) on five hits over 1 2/3 innings.

Ouch. While this was a rough enough outing in the early going, Manaea is more or less entrenched as part of the A's starting five. Expect him to sharpen things up as March progress. A year ago, he posted a 3.86 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 124/37 K/BB ratio covering 144 2/3 innings. He just turned 25 on February 1.
Mar 4 - 6:54 PM

Sean Manaea limited the Mariners to two runs over six innings Sunday in the A's 3-2 victory.

Guillermo Heredia hit a two-run double in the bottom of the fifth inning, accounting for all of Seattle's scoring in the afternoon defeat at Safeco Field. Manea yielded just five hits in all and one walk while striking out five. The young left-hander showed a lot of promise in 2016, posting a 3.86 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, and 124/37 K/BB ratio in 144 2/3 innings, and he's shaping up as a highly valuable fantasy chip for 2017.

Sean Manaea held the Angels to one run and four hits over seven innings in a no-decision Monday.

It's the first run he's allowed in three starts this month. Not a lot has gone right for the A's this year, but it's great that Manaea has stayed healthy. If that continues, he should be a top-of-the-rotation guy next year.
