Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports the Athletics are calling up pitching prospect Sean Manaea to start Friday night against the Astros.
Manaea, acquired from the Royals last year in the Ben Zobrist deal, boasts a 1.50 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, and 21/4 K/BB in 18 innings (three starts) this season at Triple-A Nashville. He warrants a pickup in mixed fantasy leagues, even if the stay is not an extended one. The young lefty will be making his major league debut. Apr 27 - 12:55 PM

Athletics LHP Sean Manaea allowed just six hits and one run over 6 2/3 innings Saturday in a win for Triple-A Nashville.

He out-pitched Dodgers top prospect Julio Urias. The 22-year-old finished with 11 strikeouts and only two walks. He threw 93 pitches with 67 of them going for strikes. Manaea has gotten off to a brilliant start this year with two wins and a 1.50 ERA over his first two outings. Oakland acquired Manaea last summer in a trade that sent Ben Zobrist to Kansas City. He should make his big league debut later this season.

A's pitching prospect Sean Manaea (leg) could pitch in a minor league game later this week.

Manaea came away with some tightness in his leg after a rough showing in a Cactus League game on Friday, but it's not believed to be serious. The highly-thought-of 24-year-old left-hander should remain a fast-riser this year in the A's system. We could see him in Oakland at some point in the second half.

Athletics pitching prospect Sean Manaea is dealing with some tightness in his left leg.

It doesn't sound like something that will be an issue for long. Manaea holds a 4.40 ERA with 16 strikeouts over 14 1/3 innings during Cactus League play. The left-hander is poised to begin the season at Triple-A Nashville but should debut at some point in 2016.
Mar 27 - 1:52 PM

Athletics prospect left-hander Sean Manaea struggled in Friday’s Cactus League start against the Angels, allowing five runs (four earned) over four innings.

Manaea just didn’t have it on this day, allowing seven hits (including a solo homer to Mike Trout) and two walks while also hitting a batter. The 24-year-old should be sent down to Triple-A soon, but he’d likely be one of the first starters called up if there’s an injury in the rotation. He’s worth tracking in fantasy leagues.
Mar 25 - 7:52 PM

Athletics prospect left-hander Sean Manaea struck out four batters over two scoreless innings Friday against the Rockies.

Manaea allowed one hit and one walk, but he was very impressive while sitting in the mid-90s range with his fastball. The 24-year-old was bothered by groin and oblique injuries last season, but he posted a 1.90 ERA and 51/15 K/BB ratio in 42 2/3 innings over seven starts with Double-A Midland after being acquired from the Royals in the Ben Zobrist deal. There’s still a lot of upside here. He could arrive in the A’s rotation at some point this summer.
Mar 4 - 7:17 PM

Athletics LHP prospect Sean Manaea tossed seven shutout frames Saturday in a win for Double-A Midland.

He matched a season-high by throwing 102 pitches. The 23-year-old has gone 5-0 with a 2.21 ERA during his seven-game unbeaten streak. Opponents have hit .223 against him over that span with 44 strikeouts in 148 at-bats. Manaea was acquired from Kansas City last month in the Ben Zobrist trade.

Athletics acquired LHP Sean Manaea and RHP Aaron Brooks from the Royals for INF/OF Ben Zobrist and cash considerations.

Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports hears that the Athletics sent $2 million to the Royals as part of the deal. Manaea is the big piece of the return for Oakland. The 23-year-old has dealt with an abdominal strain this season, but has big-time stuff and has put up a 3.23 ERA with 10.9 K/9 and 3.8 BB/9 over his first 32 starts in pro ball.

The 23-year-old left-hander didn’t make his season debut until late June due to an abdominal injury. In his 2014 professional debut, Manaea registered a 3.11 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, .228 opponents’ batting average, 4.0 BB/9 and 10.8 K/9 in 121 2/3 innings (25 starts) at Wilmington.

Assuming he stays healthy, Manaea likely will spend a majority of the 2015 season at Double-A Northwest Arkansas.

Royals prospect LHP Sean Manaea (abdomen) allowed one earned run in five innings on Wednesday in his season debut for the Arizona League Royals.

He allowed two hits and a walk in the outing, striking out six. Manaea, 23, had been sidelined this season with an abdominal strain, which is why he was assigned to the Arizona League for his 2015 debut. Viewed as one of the top left-handed pitching prospects in the game, Manaea pitched to a 3.11 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, .228 opponents’ batting average, 4.0 BB/9 and 10.8 K/9 in 121 2/3 innings (25 starts) last season in his professional debut for High-A Carolina. He’ll likely move up to Double-A Northwest Arkansas after a series of rehab starts at lower levels.

Royals pitching prospect Sean Manaea (abdomen) is hoping to resume throwing from a mound sometime next week.

Manaea has been plagued by an abdominal strain this spring and just started throwing long toss again this week. "It has been frustrating," Manaea said. "But the main thing now is to get better, take it slow and not hurt it worse." Manaea, who is likely to begin the season at Double-A, might not be game-ready until early April.

Royals prospect LHP Sean Manaea struck out nine batters over 5 1/3 innings on Tuesday, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks for High-A Wilmington.

Manaea has been on cruise control over his last eight starts, posting a 1.53 ERA, .176 BAA (.481 OPS), and 51-22 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 47 innings. The left-hander hasn’t allowed more than five hits in a game during that span, and Tuesday’s outing also marked the first time he’s allowed more than two runs since June 26. Manaea should begin 2015 at Double-A Northwest Arkansas and, if all goes according to plan, join the Royals’ starting rotation later in the season.
