Sean Manaea limited the Mariners to two runs over six innings Sunday in the A's 3-2 victory.
Guillermo Heredia hit a two-run double in the bottom of the fifth inning, accounting for all of Seattle's scoring in the afternoon defeat at Safeco Field. Manea yielded just five hits in all and one walk while striking out five. The young left-hander showed a lot of promise in 2016, posting a 3.86 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, and 124/37 K/BB ratio in 144 2/3 innings, and he's shaping up as a highly valuable fantasy chip for 2017. Date:

Sean Manaea held the Angels to one run and four hits over seven innings in a no-decision Monday.

It's the first run he's allowed in three starts this month. Not a lot has gone right for the A's this year, but it's great that Manaea has stayed healthy. If that continues, he should be a top-of-the-rotation guy next year.
Sep 27 - 2:56 AM

Sean Manaea took a no-decision in Tuesday's loss to the Astros, firing six shutout innings while striking out seven.

Manaea surrendered just three hits and held a 1-0 lead after six innings, but the game-tying run would come home in the seventh to deprive him of a win. He will bring a 4.03 ERA and 1.22 WHIP into a road date with the Angels next time he toes the rubber. That will be his last start of the season as the schedule currently stands.
Sep 21 - 1:10 AM

Sean Manaea turned in five shutout innings to beat the Royals 8-0 on Wednesday.

He struck out five while allowing one walk and five hits against his former team. This was his first start in two weeks after nursing a back injury. This explains why he was pulled after just 67 pitches despite throwing well. His record improves to 6-9 with a 4.23 ERA. He has a nice 109/33 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 125 2/3 innings. He will look to build upon this solid outing when he takes on the Astros in his next start.
Sep 14 - 10:37 PM

Sean Manaea (back) is expected to return Wednesday against the Royals.

Manager Bob Melvin said Manaea looked "better than ever" after throwing a 50-pitch bullpen session on Saturday. He employed all of his pitches and should be a go for Wednesday's tilt with Kansas City. The A's are going with a six-man rotation from here on out, which will give Manaea a bit more rest between his starts. The rookie left-hander got off to a rough start this year but has settled down since the All-Star break with a 3.35 ERA over nine second-half outings (eight starts).
Sep 10 - 6:20 PM

Sean Manaea (back) is scheduled to throw 2-3 innings in a simulated game on Saturday.

Manaea has been on the shelf since late August due to a rhomboid strain. The A's are hoping to have a clear timetable for his recovery after that outing.
Sep 9 - 7:18 PM

Sean Manaea (back) was able to play catch in the outfield prior to Friday's game against the Red Sox.

Manaea noted afterwards that he's still feeling a bit of a dull ache in his back and that he doesn't know the timetable or the next step in his potential recovery. The A's are still calling him day-to-day, but there's still no clear indication on when he'll make his next start.
Sep 2 - 7:27 PM

Sean Manaea was diagnosed with a right rhomboid strain.

In other words, he's dealing with a sore back. Manaea was forced to exit Monday's start against the Astros after 3 1/3 innings, but the Athletics are calling him day-to-day.
Aug 29 - 10:03 PM

Sean Manaea exited Monday's start against the Astros in the bottom of the fourth inning with an apparent injury.

The exact nature of the injury isn't yet clear. Manaea allowed two runs (both unearned) on one hit and two walks over 3 1/3 innings before Chris Smith replaced him. The A's should pass along an update soon.
Aug 29 - 9:16 PM

Sean Manaea was superb in Tuesday's 9-1 win over the Indians, yielding one run on three hits over seven innings.

Manaea induced eight strikeouts and walked two during this charmed outing. A Chris Gimenez solo home run in the sixth inning represented his only real spot of trouble. With the victory, Manaea improved to 5-8 with a 4.53 ERA and 1.27 WHIP. He will tango with the Astros on the road next time he toes the rubber.
Aug 24 - 1:56 AM

Sean Manaea was charged with five runs in six-plus innings Wednesday in a loss to the Rangers.

Manaea had the quality start after six, but he was sent back out to give up two singles -- the second being a bunt single -- to start the seventh. After he was lifted, both runners came around to score. It marked the first time Manaea has given up so many earned runs since July 5.
Aug 17 - 11:56 PM

Sean Manaea pitched six innings and allowed three runs Friday as the A's topped the Mariners 6-3.

Manaea needed just 75 pitches to get through six, but since all three of the runs he allowed came in the fifth and sixth innings, the A's opted to go to the bullpen for the seventh. Manaea moved to 4-8 with a 4.57 ERA. He has a 2.84 ERA in his last seven outings.
Aug 13 - 1:56 AM

Sean Manaea held the Cubs to two earned runs in six innings Sunday but took a loss.

Kris Bryant and Jorge Soler both went yard against him, but they were both solo shots and Soler's came in the top of the seventh inning. Manaea struck out four against two walks and yielded just four other hits outside of those solo home runs. It was a commendable effort against a terrific offense. The 24-year-old is now 3-7 with a 4.58 ERA and 1.31 WHIP through 98 1/3 innings this season. He faces the Mariners at home next.
Aug 7 - 7:12 PM

Sean Manaea pitched unevenly in Tuesday's no-decision against the Angels, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits over 5 2/3 innings.

Manaea compounded his issues by issuing three walks. Jett Bandy burned him for a two-run homer in the fifth and Jefry Marte did that one better a frame later, notching a three-run blast of his own. The 24-year-old southpaw will carry a 4.68 ERA and 1.31 WHIP into what figures to be a tough home showdown with the Cubs next time he toes the rubber.
Aug 3 - 1:12 AM

Sean Manaea struck out nine batters and gave up three runs on 11 hits in 6 2/3 innings to take a no-decision in the Athletics' 6-4 win over the Rangers on Wednesday.

His record holds at 3-5 with a 4.57 ERA. He has struck out 75 batters while issuing only 20 free passes in 86 2/3 innings. The rookie left-hander won't pitch again until next Wednesday against the Angels in Anaheim.
