Fernandez was designated for assignment earlier in the week to create a spot on the 40-man roster for Mike Kickham. The 24-year-old southpaw is recovering from Tommy John surgery and won't be ready for the beginning of the season.

The move clears a spot for the newly-acquired Mike Kickham on the 40-man roster. Fernandez, 24, underwent Tommy John surgery last May and will likely be sidelined through the early part of the 2015 season. He owns a 3.64 ERA with 7.4 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9 in the minors.

Fernandez allowed four runs over four innings of work this spring. The 22-year-old left-hander had a 3.51 ERA and 134 strikeouts over 164 innings between High-A and Double-A last season and was ranked as the organization's No. 30 prospect over the winter.

The M's chose to protect Fernandez from the Rule 5 Draft after he posted a 3.51 ERA with 134 strikeouts over 164 frames. The 22-year-old could move up to Triple-A to start 2013.
