Joey Butler went Godzilla in his final game of the 2015 season, finishing 3-for-4 with two homers and six RBI to help lead his team's 12-3 romp over the Blue Jays on Sunday.
Yikes. Butler launched a grand slam off Blue Jays starter Mark Buehrle in the first inning, then later followed that up with a two-run homer in the fifth. The huge game adds to (and finishes out) a 2015 campaign in which the 29-year-old hit .276/.326/.416 with eight homers and 30 RBI over 257 at-bats. Oct 4 - 7:21 PM

Rays recalled OF Joey Butler from Triple-A Durham.

Butler has hit .278/.333/.410 with six home runs and 22 RBI in 74 games this season at the major league level. He could see some action in the Tampa Bay outfield down the stretch with Desmond Jennings heading back to the disabled list.

Rays optioned DH Joey Butler to Triple-A Durham.

Butler began his Rays tenure like a house on fire, but the 29-year-old has batted just .151/.244/.178 since June 24. He hit .278/.333/.410 overall and could be back with the Rays in September.
Aug 12 - 10:39 PM

Joey Butler went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's win over the Indians.

Butler has gone deep in back-to-back games and is now up to six home runs on the season. The 29-year-old has only drawn four walks in 147 plate appearances, but he's hitting .336 with a .536 slugging percentage and continues to be a pleasant surprise for a team which is also exceeding expectations.
Jun 19 - 10:51 PM

Joey Butler hit his fifth homer Thursday as the Rays topped the Nationals 5-3.

Who would have guessed that, finally given the chance, Butler would have more homers than walks after 39 games? A strong OBP guy in the minors, he had 360 walks and 78 homers in 2,821 at-bats during his minor league career. He's been a strong OBP guy in the majors, too, but that's because he's hitting .331. He has a 38/4 K/BB ratio in 136 at-bats. He's not such a bad bet to remain moderately productive, but he's not going to keep hitting for average like this.
Jun 18 - 11:09 PM

Joey Butler went 2-for-4 with a walk, a stolen base, and a run scored in Monday's win against the Nationals.

Butler singled and scored the Rays' first of two runs in the third inning. Butler also singled in the fourth inning, helping set up another two-run frame, then later stole third base but was stranded. The DH has four multi-hit games in his last five and is batting a sizzling .344/.378/.516 with four home runs, 16 RBI, and four stolen bases.
Jun 15 - 10:47 PM

Joey Butler went 3-for-5 and drove home a pair of runs on Friday, leading the Rays in a 7-5 victory over the White Sox.

Butler had a pair of RBI singles in the contest, one in the third inning to increase their lead to 2-0 and another in the sixth to stretch the advantage to 6-2. Though there are detractors who doubt his ability to keep up this level of production, Butler is now raking at a .350/.377/.530 clip with 16 RBI in 117 at-bats. He should be owned and started in all mixed leagues at this point.
Jun 12 - 10:50 PM

Joey Butler went 1-for-4, accounting for the Rays' only two runs in a loss to the Angels on Tuesday.

The Rays were down 5-0, but Butler reduced the deficit with a two-run double in the sixth inning. The DH has been a force since getting called up in early May, hitting .327/.358/.519 with four home runs and 13 RBI in 109 plate appearances. We don't expect him to keep hitting at this rate, but he's a low-risk flier, especially in AL-only leagues.
Jun 9 - 10:33 PM

Joey Butler had a nice game against the Mariners on Thursday, singling twice and swiping two bases.

Butler also scored one of the two runs plated by the Rays in an all-around solid game for the designated hitter. All three of his steals this season have come in his last two games. He's seeing increased playing time with Desmond Jennings out injured and is slashing .348/.376/.551 over 89 at-bats. Butler's not as good as he's currently playing, but so long as he keeps hitting (he's on a six-game hitting streak at the moment), there's no reason not to ride the bat while it's hot if you're in a deeper AL-only format.
Jun 5 - 1:16 AM

Joey Butler went 2-for-3 with a solo homer in Saturday's win over the Orioles.

Butler smacked his solo shot off of Wei-Yin Chen in the third inning. At the time, it pushed the score to 3-0 Rays. That's all a dominant Erasmo Ramirez would need, as the Rays would win by that final score. Butler's hitting .309/.347/.500 over 68 at-bats, plus three homers, eight RBI and eight runs scored. With Desmond Jennings on the shelf, it's likely that he will continue to see plate appearances, though there's no reason to expect major production.
May 30 - 6:23 PM

Joey Butler went 2-for-3 with an RBI as the Rays' left fielder on Wednesday.

Butler has made nine starts since being called up May 3 and hit .258 with two homers and six RBI in 31 at-bats. We'd rather see the Rays play Brandon Guyer if it comes down to one of the other, but manager Kevin Cash has been finding quite a bit of time for both with Desmond Jennings out. Guyer didn't start tonight, but he did replace Butler for defense.
May 13 - 10:09 PM

Joey Butler slugged his first major league home run to help the Rays beat the Red Sox on Monday.

Butler finished 1-for-3 with a walk on the evening. He connected for a two-run home run in the second inning against Clay Buchholz, pushing the Rays' lead to 4-0. Butler was recently recalled after Desmond Jennings was sidelined with a knee injury and should see starts mostly against left-handed pitching. But, as was the case on Monday, manager Kevin Cash won't be afraid to throw him out there against righties, either.
May 4 - 10:57 PM

Rays manager Kevin Cash said Sunday that he plans to play the recently promoted Joey Butler "a lot."

Butler will play regularly versus lefties while Desmond Jennings (knee) is out but is also expected to see some starts against righties, as well. He's in the designated hitter spot and hitting fifth on Sunday. The 29-year-old is worth a flier in AL-only leagues.
May 3 - 1:06 PM

Rays purchased the contract of OF Joey Butler from Triple-A Durham.

He earned the promotion by hitting .317/.404/.488 with two homers and 15 RBI over 22 games for Durham. Butler, 29, could see some starts while Desmond Jennings (knee) is on the shelf.
May 3 - 10:26 AM

Joey Butler has gotten off to a smoking hot start for Triple-A Durham, hitting .377 with 12 RBI in his first 17 games.

At 29, we wouldn't really consider Butler a prospect, but that doesn't make his performance any less noteworthy. A Quad-A player for most of his career, Butler was among the Rays' last cuts in spring training. Butler has 14 games of big league experience on his resume and will probably get another chance to contribute at that level later this year.
