Joey Butler went 2-for-3 with an RBI as the Rays' left fielder on Wednesday.
Butler has made nine starts since being called up May 3 and hit .258 with two homers and six RBI in 31 at-bats. We'd rather see the Rays play Brandon Guyer if it comes down to one of the other, but manager Kevin Cash has been finding quite a bit of time for both with Desmond Jennings out. Guyer didn't start tonight, but he did replace Butler for defense. May 13 - 10:09 PM

Joey Butler slugged his first major league home run to help the Rays beat the Red Sox on Monday.

Butler finished 1-for-3 with a walk on the evening. He connected for a two-run home run in the second inning against Clay Buchholz, pushing the Rays' lead to 4-0. Butler was recently recalled after Desmond Jennings was sidelined with a knee injury and should see starts mostly against left-handed pitching. But, as was the case on Monday, manager Kevin Cash won't be afraid to throw him out there against righties, either.
May 4 - 10:57 PM

Rays manager Kevin Cash said Sunday that he plans to play the recently promoted Joey Butler "a lot."

Butler will play regularly versus lefties while Desmond Jennings (knee) is out but is also expected to see some starts against righties, as well. He's in the designated hitter spot and hitting fifth on Sunday. The 29-year-old is worth a flier in AL-only leagues.
May 3 - 1:06 PM

Rays purchased the contract of OF Joey Butler from Triple-A Durham.

He earned the promotion by hitting .317/.404/.488 with two homers and 15 RBI over 22 games for Durham. Butler, 29, could see some starts while Desmond Jennings (knee) is on the shelf.
May 3 - 10:26 AM

Joey Butler has gotten off to a smoking hot start for Triple-A Durham, hitting .377 with 12 RBI in his first 17 games.

At 29, we wouldn't really consider Butler a prospect, but that doesn't make his performance any less noteworthy. A Quad-A player for most of his career, Butler was among the Rays' last cuts in spring training. Butler has 14 games of big league experience on his resume and will probably get another chance to contribute at that level later this year.
Apr 27 - 4:59 PM

Joey Butler hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth as the Rays and Orioles played to a 6-6 tie on Monday.

Butler's homer off Wesley Wright tied the game, and though the two teams played a 10th, it proved indecisive. Butler has hit .281 with two homers in 32 at-bats as he bids for a bench spot. It's hard to see how the Rays will find room for him unless they trade David DeJesus prior to Opening Day.
Mar 30 - 5:26 PM

Joey Butler doubled and homered off the bench to drive in both Rays runs Thursday against the Orioles.

The soon-to-be 29-year-old Butler had 12 at-bats with the Rangers in 2013 and five for the Cardinals in 2014 before spending the second half of last season in Japan. He's typically been an excellent OBP guy, but also a huge strikeout guy in the minors, and most teams have figured he didn't have the power to make up for all of the strikeouts. The Rays will probably start him off in Triple-A unless they can find a taker for David DeJesus this spring.
Mar 5 - 5:13 PM

Rays signed OF Joey Butler to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Butler batted .231/.379/.385 in 21 games with the Orix Buffaloes of the Japanese Nippon Professional Baseball League after being released by the Cardinals last May. The 28-year-old has been a good minor league hitter over the course of his MLB career, and with the Rays in a rebuilding year Butler could find his way to the majors at some point in 2015.
Jan 10 - 5:42 PM

Cardinals released OF Joey Butler.

They have sold Butler's contract to the Orix Buffalo's of the Japanese Nippon Professional Baseball League. Butler hit .360/.481/.547 at Triple-A Memphis and earned a brief call-up, but he was a bad fit in an organization that has plenty of outfield depth both in the majors and minors.

Cardinals optioned OF Joey Butler to Triple-A Memphis.

Butler went hitless with three strikeouts in six plate appearances for the Cardinals. The 28-year-old outfielder was on a tear at Triple-A Memphis before his promotion but is not considered a legitimate prospect.

Cardinals purchased the contract of OF Joey Butler from Triple-A Memphis.

Butler was crushing the ball at Memphis, batting .360/.481/.547 with four homers and 20 RBI. The 28-year-old probably won't play much, but the Cards will hope he can provide some right-handed punch off the bench.
Fri, May 9, 2014 10:43:00 AM

Cardinals sent OF Joey Butler outright to Triple-A Memphis.

The Cards claimed Butler off waivers last October from the Rangers and invited him to spring training, where he hit .211/.318/.263 over 13 games. He's in a bad situation, as the outfield with the big club and the outfield at Memphis is awfully crowded.

Cardinals claimed OF Joey Butler off waivers from the Rangers.

Butler posted a promising .291/.395/.437 batting line with 12 home runs and 51 RBI in 119 games this season at the Triple-A level. The 27-year-old will serve as organizational outfield depth for St. Louis.
Thu, Oct 3, 2013 01:46:00 PM

Rangers designated OF Joey Butler for assignment.

Butler hit .291/.395/.437 with 12 home runs and 51 RBI in 119 games this season at the Triple-A level. The 27-year-old outfielder could draw interest from other teams.
Mon, Sep 30, 2013 03:56:00 PM

Rangers optioned OF Joey Butler to Triple-A Round Rock.

The move clears a spot for Alex Rios on the active roster. Butler returns to a .290/.375/.437 batting line with 10 home runs and 44 RBI in 97 games with the Rangers' Triple-A affiliate.
