Nick Ahmed went 0-for-3 before being removed for a pinch-hitter Friday against the Pirates.
Ahmed is quite the defender, but he's batting .128 with one extra-base hit, one RBI and one run scored through 47 at-bats. He can't remain quite this bad, but he's likely to be the NL's worst offensive regular for however long the Diamondbacks stick with him. Apr 25 - 12:46 AM

Nick Ahmed was hit by a pitch on the left arm and exited Saturday's spring training game.

Ahmed was plunked on the left arm and after being looked at by a trainer, he exited the contest. Ahmed was just named the Diamondbacks' starting shortstop on Friday. After the game, Ahmed said that he was fine. He'll be reevaluated on Sunday.
Apr 4 - 6:28 PM

Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale said Friday that Nick Ahmed will be the club's starter at shortstop.

They'll use Chris Owings at second base, with Aaron Hill being moved to the bench. Ahmed had a nice year at the plate last year at hitter-friendly Triple-A Reno, but he's never done much with the bat overall. He's easily the club's best option defensively, though, and that's earned him the job. The 25-year-old isn't much of a fantasy option.

Nick Ahmed went 2-for-3 with a stolen base and a run scored in Saturday's loss to the Royals.

Ahmed also drove in a run with a sixth-inning single. The stolen base was Ahmed's third of the spring, and he's now scored nine runs in Cactus League action. With Chris Owings sidelined early, Ahmed had plenty of time to make a good impression and he has done just that. The shortstop is hitting .319 and has moved into position to be the team's Opening Day starter with just a few games left in spring.
Mar 28 - 8:14 PM's Steve Gilbert writes that "it certainly seems" Nick Ahmed could be the Diamondbacks' starter at shortstop.

MLB Network's Peter Gammons reported earlier Monday that manager Chip Hale "has made it clear" Ahmed would start at short. Hale denied that anything has been decided but also didn't shoot down the possibility. "To name him the starter is hard to do, because we still have camp left," Hale said. "I'm not ready to do that. He's been very impressive. [Gammons] was assuming because of the way we were glowing about [Ahmed]." General manager Dave Stewart also said Monday that Chris Owings is "going to be a starter" if he's healthy. It's been presumed that his position would be shortstop, but it's possible he could play second base and Aaron Hill could move to third, bumping Yasmany Tomas to the outfield (or the minors). Ahmed's apparent rise could be bad news for Jake Lamb's chances at capturing the third base job.

Diamondbacks recalled INF Nick Ahmed from Triple-A Reno.

Reno's season came to an end on Sunday, so Ahmed will rejoin the Diamondbacks. Known for his excellent defense, the 24-year-old hit .228/.254/.316 in 19 games with the big club earlier this year.

Diamondbacks optioned SS Nick Ahmed to Triple-A Reno.

Ahmed is a good defender but isn't ready to hit at the major league level, sporting a .228/.254/.316 batting line across 19 games. He'll be back in September.

Nick Ahmed singled in Martin Prado in the top of the 15th to lead the Diamondbacks past the Reds 2-1 on Monday.

It was Ahmed's second single in six at-bats. He's hitting just .229 with no walks and no homers in 48 at-bats since his callup, but he's flashed plenty of leather at shortstop. He's a potential regular at the position despite his lack of any real offensive upside.

Nick Ahmed went 2-for-4 with two runs scored in Sunday's loss to the Giants.

Ahmed has struggled at the dish since his promotion, as he had four hits in 22 at-bats coming into the game. The runs scored were his first in his career. The 24-year-old may have a future in the big leagues, but he'll likely be returned to Triple-A Reno when Chris Owings returns from injury.

Diamondbacks purchased the contract of SS Nick Ahmed from Triple-A Reno.

He's taking Chris Owings' (shoulder) spot on the roster. Ahmed is known for his glove but sports a .324/.390/.431 batting line at Reno this season. The 24-year-old figures to share time at shortstop with Didi Gregorius while Owings is out.

Diamondbacks prospect shortstop prospect Nick Ahmed went 4-for-5 with a double for Triple-A Reno on Saturday, raising his season line to .323/.397/.418.

Ahmed has been on fire as of late, picking up hits in 17 of his last 20 games, putting up a .379/.426/.540 line with eight doubles and three triples. He is nothing spectacular, but could be a very good defensive shortstop who could hit higher than the major league average.

According to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal, the Diamondbacks have been receiving calls from teams on the availability of shortstop prospect Nick Ahmed.

Ahmed was acquired from the Braves in the January 2013 blockbuster trade headlined by Justin Upton. The 24-year-old is hitting .304/.385/.401 and playing high-level defense this season at Triple-A Reno, but he's blocked in Arizona by Chris Owings. The Diamondbacks (29-39 as of June 12) might want to deal from that surplus and fill other areas of organizational need. Ahmed was a second-round pick in the 2011 MLB Amateur Draft.

Diamondbacks acquired SS Nick Ahmed from the Braves in the seven-player Justin Upton trade.

The D'Backs are now planning to put Ahmed into a package that could help them land right-hander Rick Porcello from the Tigers. The 22-year-old shortstop was a second-round selection in the 2011 MLB Amateur Draft out of the University of Connecticut. He hit .269/.337/.391 with 40 steals in 130 games last season in High-A ball.

According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, the Diamondbacks will package Nick Ahmed with a pitching prospect and pursue a trade for the Tigers' Rick Porcello.

The Diamondbacks are getting Ahmed from the Braves in the seven-player Justin Upton trade, which was finalized Thursday afternoon. A second-round pick in 2011, Ahmed batted .269/.337/.391 with six home runs, 49 RBI and 40 stolen bases over 130 games last season for High-A Lynchburg. He is a very rangy defender.
