Date:

Nick Ahmed will undergo season-ending hip surgery next week.

His surgery will be performed by Dr. Marc Philippon in Vail, Colorado. The 26-year-old will close out his 2016 season with a .218 average over 284 at-bats. With Ahmed done for the year, shortstop duties will be split between Chris Owings and Jean Segura.

A second opinion on Nick Ahmed's injured right hip confirmed the initial diagnosis.

That initial diagnosis was a hip impingement. Ahmed traveled to New York on Tuesday for a visit with a specialist and is expected to receive a cortisone injection to help expedite the recovery process. He has been on the 15-day disabled list since July 23 and probably won't be ready until sometime in late August.
Aug 9 - 5:41 PM

Nick Ahmed (hip) is scheduled to visit a specialist in New York early next week.

The hope is that he will have a rehab plan coming out of that exam. Ahmed was placed on the disabled list July 23 with a right hip impingement and currently has no timetable for activation. Chris Owings has been the primary fill-in at shortstop for Arizona.
Aug 3 - 2:02 PM

Diamondbacks placed INF Nick Ahmed on the 15-day disabled list with a right hip impingement.

Ahmed may have been expendable anyways with Chris Owings returning from the disabled list. He was hitting just .218/.265/.299 with a 58/15 K/BB ratio in 284 at-bats with the Diamondbacks before suffering the hip injury.
Jul 23 - 3:21 PM

Diamondbacks activated INF Nick Ahmed from the paternity leave list.

Ahmed has been away from the team since Friday night. Peter O’Brien was sent down to Triple-A Reno to clear a spot on the active roster.
Jul 4 - 4:55 PM

Diamondbacks placed INF Nick Ahmed on the paternity leave list.

Ahmed left during Friday night's game to be with his wife for the birth of their child. He'll be away from the club for a couple of days. The D'Backs have not yet announced a corresponding roster move.
Jul 2 - 8:04 AM

Nick Ahmed is not in Wednesday's lineup against the Phillies.

He'll take a seat against right-hander Zach Eflin. Jean Segura will start at shortstop while Phil Gosselin will play second base.
Jun 29 - 1:03 PM

Nick Ahmed (hip) is out of the Diamondbacks' starting lineup again Friday.

Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale said that Ahmed is dealing with "hip issues," but he's expected to return on Saturday. Jean Segura will play shortstop while Phil Gosselin will start at second base.
Jun 24 - 7:36 PM

Nick Ahmed went 3-for-4 with a triple, a double and two runs scored against the Marlins on Friday.

The triple, his first of the year, was misplayed by Marcell Ozuna in center and really should have been ruled a double and an error. Still, it was a nice night for the light-hitting shortstop. He entered the game at .207/.264/.299 on the season.
Jun 11 - 1:04 AM

Nick Ahmed (head) is in the Diamondbacks' starting lineup on Wednesday against the Pirates.

Ahmed took a pitch off his chin on Tuesday night but came away with nothing more than some minor cuts. He is batting leadoff Wednesday versus lefty Jeff Locke.
May 25 - 3:47 PM

Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale said late Tuesday that Nick Ahmed seems fine.

Ahmed was grazed on the chin by an Arquimedes Caminero pitch on Tuesday night, an inning after Caminero struck Jean Segura on the side of the batting helmet. Segura is being treated for a concussion at a hospital in Pittsburgh, but Ahmed apparently escaped anything serious. He does have some minor cuts on his chin.
May 24 - 10:51 PM

Nick Ahmed left Tuesday's game against the Pirates after taking a pitch off his face.

Pirates reliever Arquimedes Caminero caught Ahmed in the chin, an inning after striking Jean Segura in the side of the batting helmet. The pitches didn't look intentional -- just incredibly wild -- but Caminero was ejected anyway and both benches were warned. Ahmed will presumably be tested for both facial fractures and a concussion. He was able to walk off the field under his own power.
May 24 - 10:15 PM

Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale on Thursday gave an endorsement of Nick Ahmed as the club's starting shortstop.

Moving Jean Segura to shortstop and sticking Brandon Drury at second base on a regular basis is an option for Arizona but not one they're considering at the moment. Ahmed is hitting an ugly .176/.244/.286 on the season, but he remains a terrific defensive player and the D'Backs aren't ready to pull the plug on him yet. "He really had some good at-bats in Colorado," Hale said of Ahmed. "He had some key hits (Wednesday), he hit the first ball well today … He’s our shortstop and that’s the way it’s going to be."
May 13 - 9:00 AM

Nick Ahmed is not in the Diamondbacks' lineup Friday.

It's a simple day off. Jean Segura has slid over to shortstop, and Brandon Drury will play second base.
