Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale said late Tuesday that Nick Ahmed seems fine.

Ahmed was grazed on the chin by an Arquimedes Caminero pitch on Tuesday night, an inning after Caminero struck Jean Segura on the side of the batting helmet. Segura is being treated for a concussion at a hospital in Pittsburgh, but Ahmed apparently escaped anything serious. He does have some minor cuts on his chin.

Nick Ahmed left Tuesday's game against the Pirates after taking a pitch off his face.

Pirates reliever Arquimedes Caminero caught Ahmed in the chin, an inning after striking Jean Segura in the side of the batting helmet. The pitches didn't look intentional -- just incredibly wild -- but Caminero was ejected anyway and both benches were warned. Ahmed will presumably be tested for both facial fractures and a concussion. He was able to walk off the field under his own power.

Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale on Thursday gave an endorsement of Nick Ahmed as the club's starting shortstop.

Moving Jean Segura to shortstop and sticking Brandon Drury at second base on a regular basis is an option for Arizona but not one they're considering at the moment. Ahmed is hitting an ugly .176/.244/.286 on the season, but he remains a terrific defensive player and the D'Backs aren't ready to pull the plug on him yet. "He really had some good at-bats in Colorado," Hale said of Ahmed. "He had some key hits (Wednesday), he hit the first ball well today … He’s our shortstop and that’s the way it’s going to be."
May 13 - 9:00 AM

Nick Ahmed is not in the Diamondbacks' lineup Friday.

It's a simple day off. Jean Segura has slid over to shortstop, and Brandon Drury will play second base.
Apr 29 - 5:21 PM

Nick Ahmed was ejected during the 12th inning of Sunday's game against the Pirates for arguing a questionable third strike.

While he may have had a point, as the pitch looked like it should have been ball four, it put the D'Backs in quite a predicament as they didn't have any position players remaining. Shelby Miller was forced into the game to play left field due to Ahmed's ejection.
Apr 24 - 9:18 PM

Nick Ahmed got on base three times in Saturday's 7-1 win over the Pirates, scoring a pair of runs.

Ahmed doesn't have a dynamic bat, but walked twice and singled to provide a spark in the middle-third of the Diamondbacks' batting order. He is now hitting .226/.284/.403 in 67 PA. Defense will always remain his calling card, and his glove has been good enough to keep him in the everyday lineup, despite the weak bat. His fantasy relevance is limited to NL-only leagues.
Apr 24 - 12:25 AM

Nick Ahmed went 2-for-4 and homered Friday as the Diamondbacks beat the Royals 7-4.

The healthy-and-improved Chris Owings has gotten more attention this spring, but Ahmed is hitting .439 with 13 extra-base hits in 66 at-bats, giving him an 1.190 OPS. He was also a far better player than either Owings or Jean Segura last year, so the Diamondbacks would be crazy to shut him out of the infield picture early on. He'll probably get the majority of time at shortstop, though he won't be an everyday guy.
Apr 2 - 1:22 AM

Nick Ahmed collected three hits and knocked in the winning run against the Brewers on Monday.

Ahmed seemingly got passed over on the depth chart with an offseason trade for Jean Segura, but a hot spring could make things interesting. He went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles on Monday, pushing his batting average to .429 in the Cactus League. Known as a slick-fielding shortstop, the 26-year-old could make the Diamondbacks think about moving Segura to second if he keeps on hitting. Fantasy owners should take a wait-and-see approach with Ahmed, but he'll be relevant in deeper leagues if the playing time is there.

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports that the Cardinals "have their eye on" Nick Ahmed.

Cafardo cautions that the Cards "are just starting their search process outside the organization" as they consider shortstops in the wake of Jhonny Peralta's thumb injury. At this point St. Louis is hoping they can get by for a few months with internal options like Jedd Gyorko, Aledmys Diaz and Greg Garcia. However, if they ultimately decide they're better off seeking help outside the organization, Ahmed and Erick Aybar are two names that seem to be on their radar.

Nick Ahmed clubbed a two-run homer in the Diamondbacks’ 12-3 victory over the Royals on Friday.

The Diamondbacks aren’t putting Ahmed out there for his bat, but his strong start to the spring is a nice bonus. The soon-to-be 26-year-old posted a .634 OPS with nine homers over 459 plate appearances last season. He's the superior defender to Jean Segura, so Arizona is likely better off sticking with him as their primary shortstop and letting Segura and Chris Owings battle it out at second base.
Mar 11 - 6:22 PM

Nick Ahmed is not expected to play again this season due to a back injury.

He suffered the injury last week while twisting to make a throw. An MRI showed he's dealing with some inflammation and the D'Backs want to be safe. Ahmed predictably showed little at the plate this season with a .226/.275/.359 batting line, although he did hit nine homers and played good defense.

Nick Ahmed finished 4-for-4 with a homer, two doubles and three RBI as the Diamondbacks beat the Dodgers 12-4 on Friday.

After a surprisingly strong run in May and June, Ahmed was the NL's worst hitter in July and August. However, he's suddenly opened September 10-for-23 with two homers, two triples and four doubles. That's as many extra-base hits as he had in 162 at-bats the previous two months.

Nick Ahmed went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Sunday's loss to the Cubs.

The Diamondbacks entered the ninth trailing 6-1, but they tried for a late rally. Welington Castillo hit a solo homer in the frame, which Ahmed later followed up with a two-run shot. Alas, the Cubs closed it out at that point. The 25-year-old shortstop offers a bit of pop, but he's slashing just .216/.268/.338 with eight homers and 29 RBI for the season.

Nick Ahmed went 4-for-4 with a solo home run as the Diamondbacks beat the Nationals on Monday.

Ahmed broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third inning with a solo home run off of Doug Fister. It was one of four Arizona homers on the evening. The shortstop hasn't exactly been an offensive dynamo, as Monday's performance still leaves him with a lackluster .232/.289/.348 batting line along with seven home runs and 26 RBI.
