Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said that he has not entered into extension talks with the Pirates.
Hurdle's contract will run through the 2017 season, with an additional team option for 2018. Pittsburgh has not yet triggered that option. Since taking over the managerial helm of the Pirates in 2011, Hurdle's outfits have gone a combined 509-462. The 2016 incarnation of the club finished with a disappointing 78-83 record. The Pirates announced Saturday that Tom Prince has been named as their new bench coach.

Prince spent the 2016 season as the Pirates' minor league field coordinator after serving as the manager at Double-A Altoona in 2015. The club has also named Kimera Bartee as their first base, outfield and baserunning coach. Dave Jauss, who had been the bench coach, will remain on the major league staff.

According to Cory Giger of the Altoona Mirror, the Pirates have promoted Joey Cora to be their new third base coach.

This comes after the Pirates fired third base coach Rick Sofield over the weekend. Cora, who played 11 seasons in the majors, managed the Pirates' Double-A affiliate this past season. He previously served as a coach with the White Sox and Marlins.

The Pirates have fired third base coach Rick Sofield and re-assigned first base coach Nick Leyva.

The club wasn't happy with their baserunning this season and Sofield was the baserunning and outfield coach. He had been on manager Clint Hurdle's staff for four seasons. Leyva will now serve as the Pirates' senior advisor of baseball operations.

The Pirates have extended the contracts of their entire coaching staff through 2017.

This does not include manager Clint Hurdle, who was already under contract through 2017 with a club option for 2018. It does, however, including pitching coach Ray Searage, who is widely viewed as one of the best pitching coaches in the game. It's obviously good news for the Pirates' hurlers.

Saturday's Grapefruit League contest between the Twins and Pirates was cancelled due to rain.

No makeup date has been announced, and there is unlikely to be one as spring training winds down. Saturday's scheduled starters, Tommy Milone and Jon Niese will either be pushed back a day or get their work in on the side to keep their respective rotations lined up.

Ron Cook of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that pitching coach Ray Searage has indicated his desire to retire as a Pirate.

Searage is entering the final season of his contract, and general manager Neal Huntington knows that big market clubs could come calling with highly-lucrative offers to lure the pitching guru away from Pittsburgh. He's among the best in the game at working with pitchers to fix flaws in their mechanics or rebuilding them entirely. His loss could be devastating to the Pirates if he were to move on.

The Pirates announced Saturday that they have extended the contract of manager Clint Hurdle and general manager Neil Huntington for three years, including club options for the 2018 season.

Hurdle has done a tremendous job leading the Pirates back to respectability, winning 2013 National League Manager of the Year honors after securing the team's first winning season and playoff berth since the early 1990s. No word on the financial terms of the deals.

The BBWAA has announced Clint Hurdle as the 2013 National League Manager of the Year.

It's hard to truly quantify a manager's impact, but Hurdle was an easy call here after leading the Pirates to their first winning season and playoff berth since the early 1990's. He received 25 of 30 first-place votes. Runner-up Don Mattingly had two first-place votes, while Fredi Gonzalez had three.

Clint Hurdle, Fredi Gonzalez and Don Mattingly have been announced by the BBWAA as finalists for the 2013 National League Manager of the Year award.

The Cardinals' Mike Matheny certainly deserved consideration, but it's hard to have too much of a beef with these finalists. Hurdle is the odds-on favorite to take home the trophy after leading the Pirates to their first winning season since the early 1990s.

Clint Hurdle was ejected from Friday's game against the Reds in the eighth inning, after arguing with home plate umpire Mark Carlson after Andrew McCutchen was hit by a pitch.

The two teams have a bit of a history with trading hit batsmen, and it seemed that Hurdle wanted Sam Lecure tossed from the game. It's the sixth time this season that Hurdle has been ejected.

The Pirates have signed manager Clint Hurdle to a one-year extension with an option for the 2015 season.

Hurdle is obviously already locked in for 2013. The 55-year-old was hired by the Bucs in November 2010 and is 151-173 so far in his two seasons with Pittsburgh. The back-to-back second-half collapses have been ugly, but he's done a pretty solid job all things considered.
