The Athletics have hired Al Pedrique as their new first base coach.
Pedrique has been the Yankees' Triple-A manager for the past two seasons, though he wasn't considered for an interview for the manager job at the major league level. The A's have also named Mike Aldrete as assistant hitting coach and Marcus Jensen as bullpen coach. Mon, Dec 4, 2017 03:03:00 PM

Jane Lee of reports that Matt Williams has agreed to become the third base coach for the Athletics.

Williams replaces Chip Hale, who left to take over as bench coach of the Nationals. Williams managed the Nationals during the 2014-15 seasons and has served two stints as a base coach for the Diamondbacks. He spent the 2017 season as a broadcaster for the Giants. In his playing days Williams was a slugging third baseman who had a .268 batting average with 378 home runs and 1218 RBI in a 17-year career. He is the only player to hit World Series home runs for three different teams (Giants, Indians and Diamondbacks).

A's signed manager Bob Melvin to a one-year extension through 2019.

We doubt Melvin would have much trouble finding another gig if he wanted out, so it's sort of surprising that he's willing to accept just a one-year extension. Still, he is a Bay Area native and, by all accounts, is happy in Oakland. He's gone 535-502 in 6 2/3 seasons as A's manager.

The Athletics will interview Mark Kotsay next week for their bench coach position.

While there is no current vacancy there, the expectation is that current bench coach Mike Aldrete would slide over to become the first base coach should Kotsay join the coaching staff. Kotsay spent the 2015 season as the Padres hitting coach and prior to that worked as a special assistant to the general manager in their front office.

Athletics promoted Billy Beane to vice president of baseball operations and David Forst to general manager.

This has been in the working for some time. Forst just finished up his 16th season with the Athletics and his 12th as an assistant general manager with the club. He obviously works very well with Beane and the other Oakland higher-ups. It should be an active offseason for the A's, who finished 68-94 in 2015.

Athletics signed manager Bob Melvin to a two-year contract extension.

The extension will keep Melvin in Oakland through the 2018 season. Melvin is 385-339, a .532 winning percentage, in five seasons with the A's.

Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that the Athletics will announce a contract extension for Bob Melvin on Wednesday.

The A's have announced a press conference for later Wednesday afternoon and Slusser has the scoop on what it's going to be about. She also reports that general manager Billy Beane and assistant GM David Forst are expected to receive title promotions at or near the end of the season. The A's are 385-339 (.532) in five seasons under Melvin. The skipper was the American League Manager of the Year in 2012 after previously winning National League Manager of the Year in 2007 when he was with the Diamondbacks.

Bob Melvin was ejected from Sunday's game against the Astros for arguing balls and strikes with home plate umpire Quinn Wolcott.

It's the first ejection of the season for the A's skipper. He raced out of the dugout and certainly got his money's worth before eventually getting the heave-ho from Wolcott.

Athletics promoted Darren Bush to the position of hitting coach.

He'll replace Chili Davis, who recently left for the Athletics. Bush was Oakland's bullpen coach for the previous two seasons. Scott Emerson will replace him in that role while Marcus Jensen has been appointed to the position of assistant hitting coach/catching coach.

The Angels have given the Athletics permission to interview assistant hitting coach Dave Hansen for their vacant hitting coach position.

Susan Slusser of the Oakland Chronicle said Hansen is a frontrunner for the position, but it wasn't a given that the Angels would give their division rivals the go-ahead to talk with Hansen. The Athletics are searching for a hitting coach after Chili Davis left for the Red Sox. Hansen was a player under Bob Melvin while both were with the Mariners in the 2004 season.

Hansen currently serves as the assistant hitting coach for the division-rival Angels. Chili Davis had spent the previous three seasons in the role for the A's, but agreed to a deal with the Red Sox on Sunday to serve in that same capacity.
