Yankees released INF Ronnier Mustelier.
Mustelier was batting .314/.340/.373 early on at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, but the Yanks obviously felt that they didn't have room for him. The 29-year-old will look for a gig elsewhere. May 6 - 7:36 PM

Date:

Ronnier Mustelier was diagnosed Thursday afternoon with a bone bruise in his knee.

This will take him out of the running for an Opening Day roster spot. Mustelier, 28, was batting .314/.368/.571 with two home runs through 21 spring games.

Ronnier Mustelier went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI in the Yankees' 9-7 win over the Twins on Friday.

Mustelier is batting .313/.371/.500 in 32 at-bats as he attempts to enhance his long shot bid for a bench spot. If Derek Jeter winds up on the DL, it'd seem to improve Mustelier's chances, though that wouldn't necessarily mean that he'd stick around for long.

Ronnier Mustelier (legs) should return to action on Thursday.

Mustelier suffered multiple leg contusions after he ran into a railing along the third base stands during Friday's game and is still dealing with some swelling. He could have played Wednesday, but the Yankees just wanted to give him an extra day. The Yankees haven't ruled him out for a roster spot, but he's running out of chances to impress.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said that he doesn't expect Ronnier Mustelier (legs) to return to action until Tuesday.

Ronnier Mustelier has been diagnosed with multiple leg contusions and will be evaluated further.

Mustelier left Friday's game after running into a railing along the third base stands. He was able to walk off on his own and should be fine, but the Yankees will do some tests to make sure.

Ronnier Mustelier left Friday's game after running into a railing along the third base stands.

It looked like he might have banged his knee. Mustelier was able to walk off the field on his own, but the Yankees will surely still put him through some tests. The Cuban defector is in the running for a roster spot with his strong play this spring.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Ronnier Mustelier is giving himself a shot to see some playing time at third base with how he's hit this spring.

Mustelier is batting .353/.450/.647 with a homer and a triple over 10 Grapefruit League contests. A Cuban defector, the 28-year-old batted .314/.371/.488 with 15 homers and 10 steals between Double- and Triple-A in 2012. He's probably a longshot to make the Opening Day roster, but nothing can be ruled out with the Bombers desperate for corner infield options.
