Burch Smith needs Tommy John surgery.

Another day in baseball, another announcement like this. Smith, acquired from the Padres this winter in the Wil Myers trade, will miss the entire 2015 season and the early part of 2016. The 24-year-old right-hander has good swing-and-miss stuff, but arm injuries are threatening to derail his career.

Rays optioned RHP Burch Smith to Triple-A Durham.

Smith was crushed for six runs in 3 2/3 innings Friday and immediately sent down after the game. The Rays have multiple spots in the rotation open this spring, but the righty was unable to grab one.
Mar 20 - 6:04 PM

Burch Smith was pounded for six runs in 3 2/3 innings by the Blue Jays on Friday.

Smith now has a 7.59 ERA and a 7/5 K/BB ratio in 10 2/3 innings this spring. He might be the first guy eliminated from the Rays' rotation competition.
Mar 20 - 5:30 PM

Burch Smith pitched three innings and allowed one run in his start versus the Pirates on Tuesday.

Smith now has a realistic chance of making the Rays rotation with Drew Smyly looking doubtful for Opening Day. He was behind Alex Colome and Nate Karns for the lone opening at the start of camp, but now it looks like there's two jobs available.
Mar 10 - 5:48 PM

Rays acquired RHP Burch Smith from the Padres in the Wil Myers trade.

Smith had a lost year in 2014 due to forearm issues, but he boasts a career 3.71 ERA with 246 strikeouts over 228 1/3 innings in the minors. If healthy, he could find his way into the Rays' rotation in short order.

Burch Smith will pitch in the Arizona Fall League.

Smith has been limited to just five innings in the minors this season due to a flexor muscle strain in forearm, so the Padres want him to get some extra work going in 2015. The 23-year-old had an ugly 6.44 ERA and 46/21 K/BB ratio in 36 1/3 innings during his first taste of the majors in 2013.

Padres optioned RHP Burch Smith to Triple-A Tucson; reassigned 2B Cory Spangenberg and 1B/C Cody Decker to minor league camp.

Manager Bud Black said earlier this spring that Smith could be a candidate for the bullpen, but they'll keep him as starter insurance at Triple-A. The 23-year-old struggled during his rookie season, compiling a 6.44 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and 46/21 K/BB ratio over 36 1/3 innings.

Padres manager Bud Black confirmed Sunday that Burch Smith could be a candidate to begin the season in the bullpen.

The 23-year-old hurler struggled during his rookie campaign in 2013, compiling a 6.44 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and 46/21 K/BB ratio over 36 1/3 innings with the Padres. While the strikeout numbers are intriguing, as is pitching half his games at Petco Park, unless he manages to earn a rotation spot his fantasy value will be minimal in 2014.

The Padres have decided not to have Burch Smith pitch in the Arizona Fall League this offseason.

Smith matched his 2012 output with 128 2/3 innings between the Padres and Triple-A Tucson in 2012, but the organization wants to play it safe and not over-extend him. Dennis O'Grady will be taking Smith's spot on the roster.

Burch Smith surrendered six runs and three homers in 5 2/3 innings versus the Giants on Friday.

Despite striking out 46 in 36 1/3 innings, Smith went 1-3 with a 6.44 ERA in seven starts and two relief appearances for the Padres. He's more intriguing as a reliever than as a starter right now, but the Padres should continue to groom him for the rotation in Triple-A at the beginning of next year.

Burch Smith pitched six innings of two-run ball Saturday in a loss to the Dodgers.

Smith walked Mark Ellis and then gave up a homer to A.J. Ellis in the fourth, which is all it would take to get him handed a loss working opposite Clayton Kershaw. The Padres still have to be pleased with the way he's pitched in three starts this month.

Burch Smith struck out 10 over seven scoreless innings to earn his first big league victory on Sunday over the Braves.

He scattered three hits and walked two. Smith has allowed only two runs over 12 innings in two starts since he entered the starting rotation, which might prompt owners to hit the waiver wire in search of the 23-year-old. You shouldn't get ahead of yourself for two reasons: Firstly, Smith owned an 11.37 ERA prior to his last two starts and has displayed little feel for his command. He also has a brutal upcoming assignment against the Dodgers.

Burch Smith allowed two runs in five innings and struck out seven Rockies on Friday.

Smith walked four, but none of those came back to haunt him, except for possibly shortening his outing by an inning. Both runs were scored on three straight hits and an RBI groundout in the first. Smith is a pretty risky play because of his lack of command, and he'll probably get the Braves next.

Burch Smith is expected to start on Friday against the Rockies.

It sounds like the Padres will use a six-man rotation during the final month. Smith has been great in the minors but holds an 11.37 ERA in 12 2/3 innings this year at the major league level. He should be avoided in fantasy leagues.
