Twins pitching prospect Kohl Stewart left his outing with Low-A Cedar Rapids on Tuesday with more shoulder soreness.
"I felt like (crap), tried to pitch through it," Stewart said. Last year's No. 4 overall pick was making just his second start since returning from the disabled list due to shoulder issues. The Twins will almost surely shut him down for the season now. They just have to hope his shoulder is structurally sound. Aug 19 - 11:06 PM

An MRI on Twins pitching prospect Kohl Stewart's right shoulder came back clean.

Stewart has an impingement, but it appears he's avoided a serious injury. While it certainly qualifies as good news, they seem likely to shut last year's No. 4 overall pick down for the season. Stewart holds a 2.42 ERA through 81 2/3 innings of work at the minor league level this season.

Twins pitching prospect Kohl Stewart has been placed on Low-A Cedar Rapids' disabled list due to a right shoulder impingement.

Stewart dealt with a shoulder issue toward the end of last season and is having problems again, though the Twins at this point don't appear to be overly concerned. The No. 4 overall pick in last year's draft, Stewart owns a 2.42 ERA through 81 2/3 innings of work at the minor league level this season.
Jul 25 - 4:39 PM

Twins prospect RHP Kohl Stewart was scratched from his scheduled start at Low-A Cedar Rapids on Wednesday due to shoulder soreness.

Twins director of minor league operations Brad Steil said Stewart is dealing with "a little shoulder soreness," an affliction he dealt with toward the end of the 2013 season as well. It's not a huge cause for concern for the No. 4 overall pick in 2013, and he should be back on the mound sooner than later. Stewart owns a 2.42 ERA through 81 2/3 innings of work at the minor league level this season.
Jul 23 - 11:03 PM

Twins prospect RHP Kohl Stewart scattered four hits over five scoreless innings Thursday, striking out three batters without issuing a walk for Low-A Cedar Rapids.

The No. 4 overall pick in the 2013 draft, Stewart has impressed this year in his full-season debut, with a 2.42 ERA, .230 opponents' batting average and 58-23 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 81 2/3 innings for Cedar Rapids. The 19-year-old hasn't allowed more than two earned runs in a game over his last eight starts, and he owns a 1.86 ERA and 26-8 strikeout-to-walk ratio during that span. Though he hasn't missed as many bats as expected, Stewart has been difficult to barrel (.599 opponents' OPS) and he's consistently kept the ball on the ground (1.81 GO/AO).
Jul 18 - 3:33 PM

Twins right-handed pitching prospect Kohl Stewart scattered six hits, while allowing one run and striking out five batters for Low-A Cedar Rapids on Friday.

The Twins have held back the reins on Stewart this season, but he has performed very well, putting up a 2.58 ERA and a 1.148 WHIP as a 19-year old in a league where the average player is 22.
Jul 12 - 10:27 AM

Twins prospect right-hander Kohl Stewart allowed five runs (one earned) over 2 2/3 innings for Low-A Cedar Rapids on Saturday.

Stewart allowed four hits, including a home run and a double, and hit a batter while striking out three batters. Stewart has the potential to be a frontline starter, but this is the point in the season where many prospects who are in their first full professional season begin to wear down. He has thrown 70 2/3 innings, which is likely more than he has thrown in his life, so it will be interesting to see how the Twins handle his workload going forward. He has already skipped a few starts so it will be likely that his workload will be lessened as the season progresses.
Jul 6 - 11:56 AM

Twins right-handed pitching prospect Kohl Stewart struck out four and allowed two runs on six hits over five innings for Low-A Cedar Rapids on Wednesday.

Stewart has been solid but not spectacular in his first full professional season, holding opposing batters to a .220/.297/.280 line with a 2.53 ERA and a 1.125 WHIP while striking out 6.3 batters per nine innings. Stewart was the fourth overall pick in the 2013 draft and projects as a top-of-the-rotation stalwart.
Jun 26 - 10:23 AM

Twins right-handed pitching prospect Kohl Stewart struck out six, allowing only one hit, one walk, two hit batsmen, and one (unearned) run in six innings for Low-A Cedar Rapids on Friday.

Stewart also picked up his first professional win in his 11th professional start. The Houston, Texas native won't turn 20 until after the season, so if he continues to shine in the Midwest League (3.15 ERA, 0.750 WHIP), he could spend time in High-A before his 20th birthday. Stewart has the potential to pair a mid-90s fastball with a biting slider, milking in above-average curve balls and change-ups to be the top of the rotation ace that the Twins have lacked since they traded Johan Santana prior to the 2008 season.
Apr 26 - 9:43 AM

Twins prospect RHP Kohl Stewart allowed two runs on two hits with a walk and two strikeouts on Sunday in his debut for Low-A Cedar Rapids.

Stewart, the No. 4 overall pick in the 2013 draft, spent his professional debut last summer between a pair of Rookie levels, positing a 1.35 ERA and 24/4 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 20 innings. The Twins won't rush the 19-year-old up the ladder this year, but the consensus is he has the stuff and makeup to move quickly.
Apr 7 - 12:11 PM

Twins agreed to terms with first-round pick RHP Kohl Stewart.

Jim Callis of Baseball America reports that Stewart will receive $4,544,400, which matches the assigned value for the No. 4 overall pick. An 18-year-old right-hander out of Houston's St. Pius X High School, Stewart is highly-regarded for his mid-90s fastball and power-slider.

LaVelle E. Neal III of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports that the Twins are nearing a deal with first-round pick Kohl Stewart.

Stewart will take a physical and meet members of the organization early this week, and a deal could be announced as soon as Tuesday. The No. 4 overall pick, Stewart is a high school right-hander but was always expected to sign. It's not clear how much he'll receive, but the assigned slot value for the pick is $4.5444 million.

Twins selected high school RHP Kohl Stewart fourth overall in the draft.

Stewart, widely regarded as the top high school pitcher in the class, is also a fine quarterback prospect, having committed to Texas A&M. Still, everyone seems to expect that he'll sign. Stewart is a fastball-slider pitcher capable of throwing in the mid-90s. He joins an impressive stable of young Twins arms that includes offseason acquisitions Alex Meyer and Trevor May, along with former draft picks Kyle Gibson and Jose Berrios.
