Rangers 2B prospect Travis Demeritte stayed hot by clubbing three hits Sunday in a win for High-A High Desert.
The 21-year-old already has three three-hit games this season. Two of those have been multi-homer games. An 80-game PED suspension limited Demeritte to just 53 appearances last year so he's making up for lost time. The former first-round pick does have a 25-homer season on his resume—that came in 2014—so there's certainly breakout potential here. Demeritte is just a .238 career hitter in the minor leagues, though his slugging percentage is a robust .458. Apr 11 - 1:37 PM

Rangers prospect infielder Travis Demeritte was suspended 80 games for testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance.

The No. 30 overall pick in 2013, Demeritte tested positive for Furosemide, which can be used as a masking agent. The 20-year-old has power and speed, but he's had issues making contact early on in his pro career. He was batting .241/.343/.412 across 48 games this season with Class A Hickory.

Rangers prospect Travis Demeritte homered as part of a 3-for-5 night Tuesday for Low-A Hickory.

Demeritte had his four-game hitting streak snapped on Wednesday, but it seems like he's starting to figure things out offensively. The 2013 first-round pick jumped onto the scene last season with an impressive 25-homer campaign. He already has three jacks this year, though his high strikeout rate is a cause for concern (29 Ks in 64 at-bats).

Rangers prospect Travis Demeritte went 2-for-4 with a double and a home run on Saturday for Low-A Hickory.

Demeritte is hitting .232/.315/.511 with seven doubles, two triples, and 14 home runs for the season. He also has 20 walks (9.3%) and 71 strikeouts (32.9%) in 220 plate appearances. Demeritte has elite bat speed and struggles with identifying change ups and breaking balls, and will need to improve his pitch recognition in order to reach the major leagues. He was drafted as a shortstop, but has primarily played second base this year due to defensive limitations.

Rangers prospect 2B Travis Demeritte homered in his third consecutive game on Sunday for Low-A Hickory.

The No. 30 overall pick in last year's draft, Demeritte, 19, has shown impressive power thus far into his full-season debut, with 20 extra-base hits (12 homers) and a .503 slugging percentage through 50 games. However, the second baseman's raw plate discipline and fringy pitch recognition has also produced a .234 batting average and 67 strikeouts (33.7 K%) compared to 18 walks (9.0 BB%) during that time.

Rangers prospect INF Travis Demeritte was 2-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI on Thursday for Low-A Hickory.

The No. 30 overall pick in last year's draft, Demeritte began his full-season debut by going 1-for-12 through his first four games. Since then, though, the 19-year-old has picked up his pace at the plate, as he's now 3-for-10 with three bombs and five RBI in his last three contests. In his professional debut last summer, Demeritte batted .285/.411/.444 with 12 extra-base hits, five stolen bases and a 49/29 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 30 games for the Rangers' affiliate in the Arizona League.

Rangers agreed to terms with first-round pick SS Travis Demeritte.

According to Baseball America's Jim Callis, Demeritte will receive $1.9 million, which is a tad more than the assigned value for the 30th pick of $1.7312 million. Demeritte is a raw infielder that probably won't stay at shortstop, but the Rangers like his upside.

Rangers picked high school shortstop Travis Demeritte 30th overall Thursday.

This was supposed to be a very weak draft for middle infielders, but four shortstops went in the first round. Demeritte, though, is the least likely of the group to stay at the position, which would have been the case even if he wasn't drafted by the team that already has Elvis Andrus and Jurickson Profar. The Rangers probably see him as a long-term third baseman.
