Former Phillies pitcher Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez was killed in a traffic accident in his native Cuba.
He was just 34 years of age. Gonzalez was a big signing for the Phillies back in 2013 but ultimately disappointed, making just six appearances with the big club before being released in 2016. Our thoughts are with his family and friends. Fri, Nov 24, 2017 04:00:00 PM

Phillies released RHP Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez.

The Cuban defector has had shoulder issues and winds up posting a 6.75 ERA over just six appearances with the Phillies. At least the initial agreement of $48 million fell through.

Phillies general manager Matt Klentak indicated that Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez will compete for a spot in the starting rotation during spring training.

The right-hander has been a tremendous disappointment after signing a three-year $12 million contract in August of 2013. Still though, given the Phillies struggles in the rotation, that's the place he can add the most value to the organization should he be able to get things together. The 29-year-old posted a 6.75 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 3/1 K/BB ratio in four innings out of the Phillies bullpen in September.

Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez will start Tuesday for Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Gonzalez has been limited to just four starts in the minors this season due to shoulder issues. This will be his first at the Triple-A level in 2015. He's still owed $4 million in 2016, but the signing has been a big bust so far.

An MRI showed right shoulder inflammation for Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez.

The right-hander will be shut down 2-3 weeks before being re-evaluated. Gonzalez was recently outrighted off the Phillies' 40-man roster, and he's currently at Triple-A Lehigh Valley. The team's $12 million commitment to the Cuban pitcher continues to look like a poor investment.

Phillies sent RHP Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez outright to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Gonzalez had already been optioned but now has been removed from the 40-man roster. He had a golden opportunity at a rotation spot this spring and responded by posting a 7.54 ERA with 25 hits allowed over 14 1/3 innings. The Cuban defector looks like a massive bust at this point after signing a $12 million contract in August of 2013.

Phillies optioned RHP Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Gonzalez will never get a better opportunity to make the Opening Day rotation than the one he had this spring, but he blew it by posting a 7.54 ERA with 25 hits allowed over 14 1/3 innings. The Cuban defector is looking like a big-time bust to this point.

Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez surrendered four runs and eight hits in four innings Wednesday against the Astros.

This should just about settle matters as far as Gonzalez opening the season in Triple-A. He has a 7.53 ERA this spring, having allowed a whopping 25 hits in 14 1/3 innings.

Miguel Gonzalez allowed one run and five hits in 3 1/3 innings Friday against the Pirates.

Gonzalez struck out one and walked one. He hasn't exactly been impressive this spring, but he has gotten gradually better with each outing. The encouraging thing is that the walk today is the only one he's allowed in 10 1/3 innings. Less encouraging is that he's allowed three homers and 17 hits. Even as desperate as the Phillies are for pitching, starting Gonzalez off in Triple-A still makes the most sense.

Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez surrendered two runs in three innings Sunday against the Red Sox.

Gonzalez surely ticked off his manager by shaking off Carlos Ruiz a couple of times before serving up a home run ball to Daniel Nava in the first inning. He pitched effective over the rest of his outing, though, allowing just one more hit. We'd still be pretty surprised if Gonzalez opens the year in the Phillies rotation.

Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez was diagnosed with a right knee contusion.

Gonzalez left Tuesday's start against the Tigers after two-plus innings after he was hit in the leg by a comebacker. However, the Phillies only removed him for precautionary reasons and he should be fine for his next turn in the rotation.

Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez left Tuesday's Grapefruit League start against the Tigers in the third inning after he was hit in the right foot by a comebacker.

Gonzalez threw a couple of warm-up pitches, but wasn't able to continue. He wasn't especially impressive prior to that, giving up three runs on five hits. He doesn't look like a solution in the Phillies' rotation right now.

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro said Thursday that Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez will be stretched back out as a starter in spring training.

Gonzalez began the season at High-A as a starter but was eventually moved to the bullpen and pitched a lot better there. However, the Phils still hope the Cuban defector can be an effective starter over the long haul, and there should be open spots in their rotation. "The plan for him is to try to get him to the point where he’s a starter again and to put him in the mix as a starter for us next year," Amaro said. "We plan to bring him to camp as a starter and give him an opportunity to be that. Will he be a starter for us? I don’t know, but we have starter deficiencies and we have holes there and we'd like to put him in a position where he can at least compete for a spot. He wants to prepare himself as a starter mentally and physically this winter."

Phillies recalled RHP Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Gonzalez had some arm issues earlier this year, but he has thrived since moving to the bullpen in the minors, putting up a 2.19 ERA and 51/17 K/BB ratio over 37 relief innings between Double- and Triple-A. The Phillies are hopeful that his three-year, $12 million contract will still pay off.

Phillies pitching prospect Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez is expected to be recalled next month.

Gonzalez has pitched well as a reliever at Triple-A Lehigh Valley this month, posting a 1.93 ERA in 10 games while sitting in the mid-90s with his fastball. The Cuban defector began the season on the DL with a shoulder issue and then got off to a rough start when healthy, but he's made up for lost time and remains an intriguing arm.
