Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro said Thursday that Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez will be stretched back out as a starter in spring training.
Gonzalez began the season at High-A as a starter but was eventually moved to the bullpen and pitched a lot better there. However, the Phils still hope the Cuban defector can be an effective starter over the long haul, and there should be open spots in their rotation. "The plan for him is to try to get him to the point where he’s a starter again and to put him in the mix as a starter for us next year," Amaro said. "We plan to bring him to camp as a starter and give him an opportunity to be that. Will he be a starter for us? I don’t know, but we have starter deficiencies and we have holes there and we'd like to put him in a position where he can at least compete for a spot. He wants to prepare himself as a starter mentally and physically this winter." Sep 26 - 2:20 PM

Phillies recalled RHP Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Gonzalez had some arm issues earlier this year, but he has thrived since moving to the bullpen in the minors, putting up a 2.19 ERA and 51/17 K/BB ratio over 37 relief innings between Double- and Triple-A. The Phillies are hopeful that his three-year, $12 million contract will still pay off.

Phillies pitching prospect Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez is expected to be recalled next month.

Gonzalez has pitched well as a reliever at Triple-A Lehigh Valley this month, posting a 1.93 ERA in 10 games while sitting in the mid-90s with his fastball. The Cuban defector began the season on the DL with a shoulder issue and then got off to a rough start when healthy, but he's made up for lost time and remains an intriguing arm.

Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez holds a 2.25 ERA with 20 strikeouts over 12 innings for Double-A Reading since being moved to the bullpen.

He's been clocked as high as 97 mph. Gonzalez is still throwing all four of his pitches in relief and eventually could be moved back into the rotation, but for now the Phillies will stick with what's working. "Right now he is doing what he needs to do," said director of player development Joe Jordan. "Long-term, he can end up in the rotation." Gonzalez could get a cup of coffee with the Phils in September.

Phillies activated RHP Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez from the 60-day disabled list; optioned him to Double-A Reading.

Gonzalez's pitching arm is no longer an issue, but the Phillies want him to continue to work on things in the minors as he transitions from starter to reliever. The Cuban defector has put up a 4.70 ERA and 11/8 K/BB ratio over 15 1/3 innings at High-A Clearwater. He could eventually be added to the Phillies' bullpen in the second half.

Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez (shoulder, arm) will resume his rehab assignment with High-A Clearwater on Friday.

Gonzalez was shut down for a few weeks as he went through a "dead arm" phase, but he's feeling better now. The Cuban defector has been out all season with a shoulder injury and is no safe bet to join the major league club once healthy.
Jun 20 - 4:24 PM

An MRI on Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez's pitching arm came back negative.

Gonzalez began feeling arm fatigue three starts into his rehab assignment, but there's nothing structurally wrong with him. He'll resume throwing Thursday and should resume his rehab assignment before long if all goes well.

Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez began feeling arm fatigue three starts into his rehab assignment.

He is heading to Philadelphia this week for examination by club doctors. Gonzalez, who signed a three-year, $12 million contract out of Cuba last August, has been battling right shoulder problems since spring training. The 27-year-old right-hander had allowed seven runs in 9 1/3 innings on his rehab at High-A Clearwater.
May 27 - 5:56 PM

Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez (shoulder) pitched in his first minor league rehab game on Friday.

Gonzalez fired five innings at High-A Clearwater, allowing three runs on six hits and a pair of walks while fanning one. His fastball sat between 92-94 mph, which is a significant improvement over where he was in the spring. He's still several weeks away from being an option for the Phillies.

Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment with High-A Clearwater on Thursday.

Gonzalez has dealt with a shoulder issue since early on in spring training but has made nice progress in recent weeks, getting clocked at 95 mph. His rehab assignment figures to be a lengthy one, but he could be an option for the Phillies' rotation or bullpen before long.
May 14 - 3:57 PM

Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez (shoulder) sat at 93 mph and touched 95 mph during a three-inning extended spring training appearance Monday.

"We saw that (95 mph) when we were scouting him," Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro said. "This was the first time we’ve seen it since we signed him. He was really bringing it. It’s a good sign. He’s progressing." Amaro added that Gonzalez could begin a rehab assignment around the middle of May. The Phillies still plan to use Gonzalez as a starter.

May 5 - 8:11 PM

Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez (shoulder) hit 94 mph on the radar gun while throwing to hitters in extended spring training Sunday.

"Very encouraging," Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro said. Gonzalez dealt with a sore shoulder and diminished velocity for most of spring training, so this report is indeed encouraging. There's no timetable for the Cuban import's return, but he's likely to be optioned to Triple-A once healthy.
Apr 27 - 2:31 PM

Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez (shoulder) is currently long-tossing from 100 feet.

"Still working on some of his mechanics and it's getting better and better," Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro said. "He's feeling good." Gonzalez is working his way back from shoulder soreness and there is no timetable for his return, but it does sound like he's making progress. He'll surely be assigned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley once healthy.
Apr 10 - 8:49 PM

Phillies transferred RHP Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster. Gonzalez has been bothered by shoulder soreness this spring and can now be ruled out as an option for Philadelphia's rotation until late May. The signing looks like a dud early on.
Mar 29 - 11:40 AM

Phillies placed RHP Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 21, with a sore right shoulder.

Gonzalez has been battling shoulder soreness for a couple weeks now and was given a cortisone injection on Thursday. He should resume throwing soon if the shot has the desired effect.
